As Richard Attwood implied the gearbox of the 1970 917 had no oil cooler , I had to check my refs. Indeed , the oil cooler was introduced on the longtail version to reduce the need for drag inducing air scoops. As we know the old style shorttail version , sans oil cooler , actually triumphed in the Le Mans race. Minutiae aside , Brian Johnson is one lucky rock star!
