So, to be clear, do you have $30K to spend, and want the best car you can buy for $30K, or do you want to find the best possible example S2, and would prefer to pay $30K?

In other words, is your decision making process dollars first, then condition, or condition first, then dollars?

The reason I ask is that I suspect finding an S2 in top condition for $30K may be a tad optimistic in the current (apparently still rising) market.

I'm thinking good luck even finding one, you may be able to talk Michel into parting ways with the white turbo he has, I have a red one but you will need to stretch the budget;)

When you say "tad" you mean "seriously"...

Well, I'm trying to be careful to not overstate my view. The thing is, anything is possible -- sometimes things just fall in your lap. But that's not the same thing as "likely".

In a depreciating or steady market, if you are patient, time is on your side. You can wait 6 months for the perfect car at the great price to appear, and if you are quick off the mark, you may well bag your prize. But in an appreciating market, the trap is to always be behind the curve, and so after 6 months you realise you have to up your budget, but the market has moved again - and you see a car that you could have bought 6 months earlier for $x go for $x+y (where y is is an arbitrary positive number.)

As Tingy says, the problem in the current market is not just finding a nice example, it's finding *any* example for sale. My feeling is the market has tightened up possibly because people who have these cars are happy to hang on to their cars -- as long as the market is rising. Full disclosure, I've been toying with the idea of selling my S2 to maybe get into a Cayman, but I have a bit of reluctance to the whole idea in part because it feels like getting off the up escalator onto a down escalator. Having said that, these cars are primarily for fun and enjoyment, and so thinking solely about them as purely an investment is probably self-defeating,

Anyhow, back to the topic at hand -- if I were a buyer in the current market, I'd probably be taking an aggressive stance on price, once the right car turns up. But I'd also be very selective, and would not settle for anything but a primo example. My reasoning would be that if I got a top example, even if I paid a bit over the odds "on the day", the appreciation over the medium to long would be assured. But I'd be avoiding anything that wasn't top shelf. My personal experience tells me that's where the ultimate value is.

So I'm definitely a "condition first, then dollars" buyer.

Agree and disagree (Confused, I am).

I'm not sure if you saw this red S2 OZJustin but it went for $30k from memory. But it sold in a matter of hours. My personal opinion is it was a $35k car, probably would have taken 48 hours to sell at that price.

I think that we are in the mid $30k's to be honest for a good S2 or Turbo, but Michel does have his white beast for much less than that. Saying all that if you have the money ready to go it isn't that crazy to think you may find one of these like the red one. Mine is comparable in Grey mettalic and I value it about $35k.

Good luck, I hope you find one like this one.

Fully documented, owners, service history,  147,000 kms

That actually sounds like a pretty keen deal in the current market. If someone actually offered you $35K, do you think you'd sell it? My feeling is that if you offered it that price, it wouldn't last long. There are just no good ones to be had, at least on carsales (well, there is that quite nice early Turbo for $58K, but I think that may still be a bit "ahead of the curve" in terms of pricing.)

Thanks for the thoughts all. :)

My current preference is for an S2 but I would still consider a Turbo given the slim pickings. I'm aware of the market and acknowledge that $30k won't be an easy buy. I do feel it's a reasonable ballpark budget for a 'good' car though. I'm not expecting a sub 100,000km concours example at that pricepoint obviously. Case in point is the recent red 944 S2 in WA for $29k. That is my target car. Well cared for and an arguably fair price. I made contact with the seller the arvo it was listed but a deposit had already been taken.

I'm in no rush (market aside) so let's see what becomes available and will go from there. :)

I rang that guy before 6pm (nsw time) the day it was put on and i was the first caller he said, if i had known i would have put a deposit on it for you Justin, I was tempted but my wife mentioned something about divorce, it sounded like a good buy but not a lot of driving the last couple of years.

"All good things come to those who wait." *

* Terms and conditions apply. May not be applicable in appreciating markets. See PDS for full disclosure. ;)

Seriously, good luck with your search. :) (Sounds like you have owned an S2 earlier?)

Well, the most important detail from your point of view is that it isn't for sale at the moment! (But if if I do decide to put it up for sale at some stage, I'll certainly let you know.)

I saw your want ad on gumtree -- smart, that may flush a few fence-sitting sellers out...

I think an active approach like that is the exactly the right way to go rather than just passively wait for the ads to appear on carsales etc.

If I were you, I'd also try nagging MB911 into submission... it sounds like he has a very nice example sitting under that car cover. :)

Hey mate,

Another suggestion I'd like to offer you, is to talk to Porsche independent shops, the guys that are worth their salt will take some hours out of their day to talk to you, usually better if you're referred by a good customer friend though, I'm sure PFA can help you here.

This is yet another good avenue to find cars that may never even hit the open market.

Where are you based?

It was a red S2 with 120,000 k's ...... Oz delivered. $35k ..... no photos in Sydney

Amazing. Currently, the half-life of a red S2 ad seems to be measured in minutes...

Maybe Justin bought it? He was certainly geared up with his wanted ad. Could have been a case of "Snap!"

Wow, that went quick. $35K, I think it is the magic figure at the moment for a good S2. I hope Justin or another PFA'er got it.

It didn't sell.

I spoke with him, he's going to get some better pics of it and post the advert properly.

It sounds like it's in mint condition.

Edgy - Great idea but I'm already onto it. I've emailed every Porsche specialist workshop and dealer I know of throughout the country.

I'm based in Brisbane. Most of the cars coming up for sale seem to be Sydney cars unfortunately...

Plugger2 - Thanks mate. No luck with the Gumtree wanted ad yet but worth the exposure.

I wish I could say yes re the Gumtree S2 but no it wasn't me.

I contacted the seller late last night to request further details (and perhaps at least one photo...) but he already had four interested parties. It is a very unique colour from my google search. Zyclam red pearl (it's more a purple burgundy metallic) with white linen leather interior.

Here's a Zyclam Red Pearl 944 with linen interior - even RHD! (Maybe it's even the same one...)

I think anyone else would definitely describe that as a burgundy rather than a red. But an interesting and unusual colour nonetheless... I'm still not decided about it on the 944 shape though. I don't *dislike* it... just not sure how much I like it yet.
