The second and final iteration of the corvair coupe is a much prettier design and largely cured the cars suicidal handling tendencies

By that time however Nader poisoned the car.....Pity

They also made a wagon version.....fugly

and commercials................ Greenbriars van a now a cool and reasonably priced alternative to the uber expensive VW splitty, also a pick up with a unique side loading gate.

This paragraph is somewhat ironic:   

The many travails of the Corvair as released for the 1960 model year are well known. Mistakes were leaving off the front anti-roll bar to save money and allowing the proportion of weight on the rear wheels to rise too high, something that Ferdinand Porsche controlled rigorously in his designs. Steering response was too slow, deliberately so people would not excite it too much—not a good decision. The requirement for sharply differing tire pressures front and rear did not accord with American ideas of car maintenance.

It was a actually a GM engineer Zora Arkus - Duntov who actually introduced Porsche to the concept of a skidpan for testing and front sway bars in the first place!

(He actually successfully drove for Porsche at Lemans a couple of times in the late 50's and this, with his previous engineering work for other companies gave him credibility with Ferry.  Interesting guy who became best know for his later work on the C2 and C3 Corvettes. )

Duntov was also the guy who suggested the staggered tyre pressures as a way of mitigating the Corvair handling issue at no additional cost to GM when they were unwilling to spend the extra 10 bucks or so per car for the camber compensation bar that would have tamed the swing axle rear end.  He also was the inspiration for the for the much improved rear suspension - based on his unusual but clever Corvette design - for the second series of Corvairs.

Despite the hate , it is still a cool car , esp for you northern suburbs types who cant fight your way out of the city ;)

 

And for those bristly guys who manage to escape to the mountains , it's all been done before.

Dentist's wives found they were widowmakers

The iron weights bit was rather embarrassing , given the engineering prowess of the company. Mind you they were making aerofoils for the lethal 917 in 1969 using tinsnips and duct tape.
