Question about the battery for a 997, 2008, carrera S, series 1

hi all

I had the car's battery checked a few weeks ago @ Porsche and they told me its @ 51 % life left?

they said I should get a new battery.

is this just a sales ploy or does the battery still have quite a bit of use left?  I drive the car approx. once/week for 30 minutes.

any help/input much appreciated

cheers

How old is your battery? It's probably something to keep on your radar for your next service I'd say.

I'd also #getoutanddrive ! 30mins once a week doesn't allow much alternator charging for prolonged battery life.

Final step, I'd recommend you be to get a ctek trickle charger if you have a power outlet in your garage. This should keep you battery topped up whilst not in use

No problem,

I THINK the Ctek unit may be what Porsche actually uses - they just re-brand it.

If you do need a new battery in the end, I'd recommend the Bosch Mega Power SM 58014.  It's the biggest one that will fit in a 997 I believe

the Porsche trickle charger is made in china, not stuttgart

Isn't there a special Porsche battery on 997's (& later) that can talk to the ECU once the computer recognises it? Supposed ups the charge if the battery needs it,

I wonder what the Porsche tax & Oz Jealousy tax is on that part?

+1 on the genuine charger being a Ctek.

For less money than the branded one you can get the next model up in the ctek range.

Dealership told me my battery was on the way out and quoted $500+ two years ago. I kept my current battery (no pun intended) it's been working well so far but a replacement is on the horizon. I'll probably go an optima red top but you do need an adapter plate for it to fit.

My two cents. Andy Stack Porsche Specialist mechanic at Rennsport recommended the Varta or Bosch S3+ (80amp) to me today for my 997.1S. Due to availability went with the Bosch at around $170 from Goodwill in Cockburn Central. Also comparably the Noco 7.2 charger seemed better value than the well advertised Ctek 10 given similar functionality but was $80 dollars cheaper. Apparently a good charger has about 10% of the battery amps which makes the Ctek 5 (comparable price to Noco 7.2) a little under powered. I was using the Ctec 5 this morning to charge my old battery and it took quite a while from dead to 60% with extreme heat coming from the Ctek 5 after a couple of hours. Will try the Noco 7.2 on it before putting in my new Bosch tomorrow.

Update: Ctek 5 got stuck around 60 to 70 percent. Switched to Noco 7.2 and it was near 90 percent after a couple more hours. Extra ampage definitely helped. Pretty sure Ctek has 40 percent off at repco in WA anyway so can probably get a Ctek 10 for the price of a Noco 7.2 at the moment.

if my current battery has approx. 50 % life in it (was tested @ Porsche centre last month ) do I need to change the battery now?

I drive the car approximately once a week for 30-60 minutes

Definitely time for a c-tek charger (same brand as the genuine Porsche trickle charger)

I've noticed that when your battery is on the way out, you start to get weird electronic things happening, like windows going up and down, weird engine/car failure lights that come and go, lock/unlock will then won't work...  Even the trickle charge won't fix the battery when you get to that stage.

Once a week, 30 minutes not enough for these cars...  Do a good drive on a weekend - 2 hours plus non-stop if you can... 997.1s love it. In fact, all 911's love that!!

If you're battery is on the charger, all good. Keep an eye on it you'll be able to tell when its starting to die. PCM wanted $500 (from memory) for a new battery...

Yes!

I thought I had an electrical issue! Every so often I'd unlock the car, open the door and the driver seat electrics would kick in!! (lower back bolster would start inflating) - Ctek full charge on the battery a month ago and hasn't happened since. :CoolDance:
