1966 912 coupe ?

Recommended Posts

It's not a scam or anything.  That 912 belongs to a well known guy on the TYP901 registry.  He also has an 1965 911 and is selling the 912 because he doesn't have enough garage space for both cars and a boat.

I have spoken to the seller and he has cited the above reason as well.

I don't think its a scam! I think it sounds like  the perfect car for me to re-fresh.

If its a shitter, then it is over priced.

Can't comment anymore until I see it in the flesh. If its not sold before Friday that is....

Scam is the wong word here...no such suggestion. Previously I asked a question about why gumtree ( perhaps other sites) seem to have some doubt cast on it, Niko answered it.

Douglas and npv are right about the bonafides of the seller...just that he as chosen to use gumtree over carsales or a club site. Though it was briefly offered over the 901 forum last year. Which the current owner is a member of. It just didnt sell.

Think the question here is does 17 k for an early lhd drive car maybe needing some or more than just some body work and other, represent a good buy in the market place... said before that 17 k for an early 911 in similar condition irrespective of handing of the wheel would not be quibbled...whats it saying??? Maybe some of us are knobs - meant snobs :) - and disregard the 912 out of hand cause it doesnt have a six?

Car as an everyday driver, where your not too bothered to leave it parked at Aldi's, that could have running repairs overtime too improve could make alot of sense for someone wanting an early car...but wont cant doesnt need to drop 35-40 k plus for a similar 911 proposition. If you could find one.

912's are great cars

Not you hugh, More my comments on my thoughts I stated re gumtree i think. i did not intend to insinuate this particular advert was a scam or to put the owners integrity in question. But if it has been taken that way i unreservedly apologise to all/any who are aggrieved.

I hope it goes to a good owner who will bring it back to its glory days. That's it from me on the subject.

17k for a rough LHD 912 is a good starting price.

I do think that perhaps every early Porsche model other than the 911 has been under-appreciated.

The 912 has been overlooked globally as there were loads of them available. Now not so many.

If we saw a 1964 356 SC for sale, LHD in the same condition it would be 25k +. The 356 Requires alot more talent to put right any body and rust issues due to its more complex and hand built construction.

The 912, as we know is the same as the 911 in all but the engine.

The 912 Engine, as mentioned can be tuned to make some decent Horsepower and it doesn't have as much weight to haul around.

Remembering that the early 911 SWB models are now stratospheric values and in 2.0L form only toted 130Bhp.

120Bhp from a Porsche Pushrod is not that hard at all to achieve.

OK, its not a 911.

Neither are Boxsters, 928's, 944s, 968s, Cayennes, Panameras etc etc etc....

They are of course all extremely good cars when compared to other manufacturers cars. When compared to a 911, some tend to dismiss them with that air of superiority that I dislike in some porsche owners/drivers.

As I have a 356 SC already, I know what makes these cars tick. I can do the body work and make it into a nice car.

I need a car to work on or I get all messed up.

This one looks perfect for me to fill in my time with.

We should re visit the topic of 912's in about 5 years time and see if 17k is 'too much' for a rough runner.

Is 17k too much for a rough runner 356 SC?

Wasser - i suggest that you negotiate a buy price -  likely get a bit of relief from the seller (John) -  and buy it on the strength of an honest vendor. It will bnneed some work.

Have I said already how much I like 912's....a curious bit of early porsche dna...

Indeed. I am one of those guys that like to see the car in the flesh before I start talking numbers.

Considering that the car has been for sale for a while means that there are issues with it. To put those issues right costs money. Whatever I feel that cost is or will be is what discount or money off I shall seek.

I really like the 912 for many reasons and it has overtaken my desire for an early 911 and a 993. In particular I want a LHD one.

I see it as a pure car and an evolution of the 356, which I love.

Anyway, if its too far gone I will walk away from it.

It is likely that I wont be paying 17k for it as I can get one from the states for 15k in slightly better condition.

But It is ticking all my boxes right now. LHD, Needs work and airKuhlt-porn.

Yes I have. I am driving over on Sunday, staying in Geelong and viewing the car Monday morning.

Has been some antics from another interested party buying the car sight unseen and promising to deposit money into the sellers account and it never happened......

So the Seller has kindly given me first refusal on it.

Yeah. I was very keen on a 993 and still am. However for some reason I just started to really focus on SWB 912's alot. In LHD as well.

This one is a 5 speed, 5 Dial one which is a nice spec. The clock doesn't work but my Local little old german clockmaker says he can make it work again.....he did with my 356 Clock. It also has an outside temp gauge from the pictures.

Just hoping that it doesn't have serious rust issues anywhere. I know the paint is fecked, which is no big deal as I can strip it, spend nights and weekends prepping and primering it and the get my good friend to cover it in PoloRot again. Chrome will need to be stripped and re done which I can do easily.

Then again as soon as you take the paint off you find all the shit repairs of its past so its a gamble..........but "We Fix".

Engine is simple, I have some barrells and pistons ready for it so will just yank it and give it a nice top end rebuild, pushrod tubes etc....

Gearbox will need some attention so will do that as well.

Really am hoping this car can take up my focus for the next 18mths or I will be extremely bored.

Most of us are in Melbourne.

PFA have had gatherings in the past on the Port Melbourne foreshore.

Port Melb just off citylink so good for airport & Geelong.

I could do as early as 3.30pm, that would save you going to Geelong first, but would mean you having to kill a couple of hours in Melbourne.

If this works for you, I could just post an event and see who rocks up on the day.
