New here...... I want a porsche!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone who cares to read my post,

I am a car and bike nut. I currently own 3 corvettes , 1 mustang and a few old bikes and one new one. I pretty much like anything with a motor and breasts!!

I have never owned a porsche before and ive been thinking on buying a european sports car. I would like  a porsche, but know nothing about them. i have not even been in one for a ride!!, but I have always loved the look and style.

i import all my cars from the USA, as i go there quite a lot. My family is from the USA. I have bought in over 12 cars to date.

i would like to buy a 911 and i assume that the turbo model is way more expensive?

1968-1975 would be the vintage of the car that i would like. (i like the older cars plus easyer to bring in). I am also willing to buy one here as well, and i will have around $35,000-$50,000 to spend

can some one please answer a few of my questions?

* What models are the most collectable around that time and what are they worth?

* what model is the run of the mill model if any?

* What size engines does porsche make for that period?

* Does matching Numbers matter in the porsche world?

* Are they expensive to own and maintain (pending i buy a reasonablely good one)?

Thanks to anyone who can help and advise on what to look for when buying an older car.

Dan

Hmmmm. I like anything with a motor or breasts but you're among friends here.

There's a big cutoff in models in the Porsche world in your date range. Pre '74 cars are referred to as "long bonnet" cars or 901 series cars. '74 - '89 cars are referred to as G series or impact bumper cars. Long bonnet cars are more expensive by a whack and generally slower than later cars.

1975 rules out Turbos too, as they start in '76 and are more expensive than their NA cousins.

Matching numbers matters.

Expensive? How long is a piece of string?

Run of the mill models would be the 912, which is a four cylinder car where the 911 is a six cylinder. And now that I've said that I'll need to watch my back 'cause there's been an outpouring of love around here for the 912 recently.

If I were you, I'd cast the net a little later, and look at 911 SC models (1978-'83) or Carrera 3.2 (1984 - '89).

As others will tell you, buy on condition uber alles.

Well thats a great start to my questions. turbo cars start 76. I will have to consider power over nostalgia. I will defiantly go for a 6 cylinder car.

i do have a friend who has a late 70s model, non turbo,  I will try to visit him in Cooma and go for a drive in his car.

I will have a look around sydney and try to test drive a couple at some yards. i still like the older style cars, there is just something about them i cant explain! I know that they are more expensive. "long Bonnet" Id never heard of that. My 69 Tri power corvette definitely has a long bonnet though! lol

Drive as many examples as you can be allowed to...find out when the next club run or early morning get together happens and tag a long.

Your budget gives you wide options particularly if sourcing from the us...whilst matching numbers can matter, a well modded car with non matching engine etc is accepted. If you like old Skool aesthetics and want a local car then there are backdate options with BIG engines on the market.

Unlike the UK in oz we seem to be more sensitive to the issues of Lhd cars and they are usually worth 10-20 percent less in the oz market. On the other hand a cracker of a Lhd car remains exactly that.

Btw don't dismiss the 912... The last fella is a charlatan... :)

Welcome to the forum Dan. As you can see already there is lots of great info here and some pretty passionate Porsche people. Good luck with your search. Pictures of your cars would be great.

There were a few 1975 930's delivered, however extremely rare and sought after prices start at 100k and go north.

The best place to start is locate cars that interest you and go and see them. Start to build a database in your head of what type of car you want. If you have any specific questions post them up, there is always someone who can answer your questions.

Also locate a porsche specialist who you can work with as you will need to get a Pre Purchase inspection done, so a Specialist is going to be your barometer of logic for purchase.

With your budget you will be able to buy a really nice Porsche that you can drive and enjoy.

Now, get out there and start engaging with Porsches, its a lot of fun and a educational at the same time.

Great info , thanks all. I have a lot of research to do. I think that i can find a very nice car in my budget of around 40-50 k. Ive been looking around and I have a lot of interest in the older cars, they just seem a little more raw, and i like that.

I also seen on on car sales, and i like it as well. Its a little modified but i think i like it!

This is very early days for me as i have had American cars for 15 years, and this is defenatly a big step for me. I know NOTHING about porsches!

Im going to take a trip down Parramatta road in the next few weeks and take a look at a few. Believe it or not, but I have never even sat inside a porsche! so, its kinda strange that i like these cars so much!!! I cant wait!!

Both very modified Porsches there.............

Like Wasser said, get out and start looking at some and talking to people that know Porsches (properly know Porsches). There is alot of variety and cars can differ largely although they may all look the same!

Best of luck on your quest, please keep us posted.
