Why buy in Australia?

it's not all one way though;

i.e. for exhausts, was looking a Z stuff and what would be $1100 worth of work from my local exhaust place is eye watering if you order from certain places from overseas (then add shipping... and the exhaust shop may have to adjust it for you anyway to make it fit right)

I'm in the wholesale business (Professional Electronics) and for us the problem is not too bad.

However we do see an issue with US & EU manufacturers that do not have a "Global Pricing" strategy.

They manufacture a widget in the US and its costs $200 they sell it to the dealer/retailer for $300 and it will retail for $399-$450

They then want to expand their markets and sell to AU

They know they can't trade with each dealer/retailer direct in a foreign country so they need a Distributor.

But there is no margin for a Distributor in their pricing strategy.

Add to this the volume discount game of the "US buy more so we should pay less" AND as Hounddub mentioned the 40+% margins the retailers demand that end up past 50% with rebates and this is where we are.

A mate of mine is a food broker and as he says the overseas manufacturers have a name for Australia

Treasure Island - as they can charge what they like

Just ask Porsche Australia

Bloody hell! Are the nappies gold plated these days???!!!

The baby industry has staggered me, it makes the wedding industry look like amateur week!

Prams that cost over $2K, ISOFIX baby seats, talking potties, video monitors, etc etc etc. not to mention the hospital charge for the delivery up here that relieved me of over $20K! Shame I couldnt shop for that on the web.

Nope, but prams are. $$$$thousands for some

I was stunned when we went pram shopping. Thankfully a generous grandparent "donated" ours.. So we ended up with a Bugaboo with all the bells and whistles. Check out the Bugaboo retails online and you'll see an option list that Porsche would be proud of! Cup holder ($80), travel case ($299), UV Shade ($150)..... On top of the $2000 purchase price.

Bloody Awesome!

Think about it as like you doing a euro delivery on a Porsche! :)

That's bragging rights when you get back home here... Singapore delivery option.

  • 3 weeks later...

hmmm, when I bought my first Porsche I was very hesitant to order parts online from overseas, however after being burned a few times from a local supplier I could not justify spending 3 times the amount just to get parts locally. I had a 924S at 1 stage & the alternator failed. $700.00 AUD for a second hand one with 1 month warranty. Or $150.00 AUD from Pelican Parts, + $50 for shipping.  I'm all for supporting local business, but not at those prices. It's a vicious cycle, the more we buy direct from overseas, the harder it makes it for the local suppliers.

It pays to shop around online too. I've been ordering bits for a mate, and 1 OS supplier, Rennspd, quoted $135 delivery, Pelican and Sierra Madre were $432 for the same parts to be delivered! Yes, the more we buy online does make it harder for locals, yet if you contact JustJames here with your quotes, I'm sure he would try to help you out as best as he can (Just ensure the Caramellos are included or the deal is off!)

I went down to AH yesterday to chat to James and pick up some Caramellos parts. My 4 year old was very happy and on a sugar high for the rest of the afternoon (thanks James)! I have purchased a few things from AH since owning the car and found them to be very reasonable in terms of price and they provide excellent service.

$45.75 Shipping! bugger that I'll phone the local Porsche dealer. Oh! not in stock, but could get them in 2 days! cool how much? $70 plus! Bugger that I'll go to the local independent Porsche guy. Drove 1 hour round trip, had the parts $61 plus my time and fuel.

If i had e-mailed PP and said hey can you please review the shipping I bet they would have come back at $15-$20 and i would have gotten the parts in a week (ish). But no I was in a hurry and was going to do the jobs at the weekend, and guess what the seals are on the car.....

yes on the front seat where i left them

So Mr J James @AH I'm sure you will read this post as this thread should be of interest to you. If I had called for these parts what would your price have been? OK never mind the $5 to post to Brisbane or $15 if i was in a a hurry.  Would you have been competitive?

The point i'm trying to make here is that the local suppliers can't be as competative as the overseas suppliers as they will never be able to buy or sell in the volumes required. They also know the most people are shopping on line, but if they come to them they probably need the part right now so they don't need to be that competitive.

Customer service is like a Koala, we know its out there but we just don't see it very often. This very first parts i bought for my Porsche were from an Aussie supplier. Website looked great, clicked on the Porsche parts section and "This page is still under construction" so i called and got through to parts: Me - "Hi i'm looking for blah blah blah for my 911" - Supplier - Sorry mate the guy does this stuff is on the phone, call back later"

Customer service would have been - Sorry sir, my colleague who deals with this is busy with another call, can i take your details and we will call you back" it's not that hard really.

When I did call back, i was told that i needed some parts that it turned out i didn't and some of the parts sent were wrong and i had to send them back at my cost, no apology for the error either. Have i bought there again? what do you think...

Harvey Norman "We will never sell on line" Oopps! Gerry got that one wrong   in fairness though they did not bury their heads in the sand they took it on the chin and adapted to the new environment.  If you don't adapt you become extinct e.g dinosaurs, DoDo bird, Ford,Holden etc.

So will the Aussie Porsche parts suppliers adapt to their environment ? lets have a little look into the future.... Well according to the great Oracle (Also known as PFA whats for sale in Aus) Porsche prices are on the rise..... what does this mean oh great Oracle?

Well (Imagine Morgan Freeman voice) as the prices of Porsches rise especially SC Coupes, they will only be affordable by the very very rich and they will not buy parts they will leave it up to their specialist Chartered Mechanic, who's labour costs are so high they make the parts look cheap  (I don't really know what that emoticon means just like the look of it).

All done.
