Apparently if you email Porsche with the vin they can tell you where it was delivered to and a list of factory options. I've not done it. The obvious way to pick my SC as a conversion is that the passenger door trim has a little metal cover where there was a second window switch. Mine is a ROW car from Germany.

Depends on how thorough the conversion was.

For example, from googling:

"Because you didnt have to change the steering box in a 911 for a conversion, the main modifications were pedals & dashboard & the 'smugglers box' sheet metal. this affected the airconditioning as the inside bits were behind the pedals. Look carefully under the bonnet & the inside front floors/pedals to satisfy yourself for the quality of workmanship."

An example of lack of thoroughness is if they didn't bother to move the twin power window buttons over as well. So, there's two buttons on the (now) passenger side...

Also, we have different rules regarding crash safety. Not sure if it affected older cars, but some things like side intrusion bars etc are different in AUS.

Finally, the collector market will generally side-step a rhd conversion so be prepared for it to possibly take a bit longer to sell.

On the other hand, having a bit of a 'mongrel' car can be more fun because its less ri$ky to modify it etc...

Any way of telling if a 930 was factory LHD or RHD from vin numbers ,

as it has usa bumpers but vin says made in Germany ?

Another telltale sign that often gets overlooked are the direction of the windshield wipers .... Even after a conversion, they often get left on the "passengers" side where they should now be on the "drivers" side ....

Can easily be changed over, but not always done ....

Is this the Silver one on car sales? It has a US rear bumper and euro/row front indicators both in the wings and in the bumpers.

The side mirrors are bias mounted so that the drivers side mirror is mounted further forward than the drivers side. A "shortcut" conversion will sometimes miss this.

A good conversion unstitches the entire trunk area floor pan and replaces it. I have been told it is over 1000 spot welds. Yes the steering rack is the same LH to RH. It's all the steel body work that has to be changed. It is very invasive on a car.

Some nasty conversions leave the brake booster on the LHS and build pushrods to actuate it. Though I have not seen this on a Porsche yet.

I have seen a Trans Am converted using bicycle sprockets and chain to steer the LH steering column! every wire was extended under the dash with the same roll of brown wire.

Not sure about the later cars but the 3L 930s VIN would tell you if it was US or not.

I decode that VIN as :

1983

930 Turbo

Europe / ROW

Don't know if it's been converted as Europe cars were LHD and other countries were RHD .... but a definite possibility It was delivered as a RHD ......

Only way to know for sure is to contact Porsche or check out the delivery books if they are there.....

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong .....

EDIT ...... 1983 not 1984 .....

Brief information on VIN numbers

The 17 letter VIN used in automobiles was first described in ISO Standard 3779 in 1977 and was later revised in 1983. It is the current standard and is used all over the world by car manufacturers.

The letters O, I and Q are not used in a VIN as they can be mistaken for numbers 0 and 1. Even with this rule, there are several occasions, when the VIN is incorrect in official registers. Also, no dashes or spaces are allowed in a VIN.

To learn the Porsche option and build codes generally, see Porsche option/build codes

firstly I will clarify that mine isn't a 930, it's an SC. As shady said, door mirrors are offset, and sometimes not relocated. Mine have been. I think the radio aerial on a lhd is on the left whereas it's on the right on a rhd. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I saw a photo only yesterday that had the booster on the left in a rhd car. Obviously a l to r conversion.

just consulted my 'peter morgan bible'

WPOZZZ - essentially means it was delivered ROW

93 - 930turbo

ZDS - 1983 production year

496 - production number

so, no way of telling LHD/RHD from Vin. All you know for sure is this isn't a US car because they didn't produce then for the US market in 1983 (also Japan I think)

Any idea on the odd bumpers then , or was this perhaps an option ?

USA rear  , euro front ?

Obviously conflicting information, contact Porsche to confirm VIN details and then have it checked by a specialist re: the conversion. Also why anyone would put US bumpers on a non US car doesn't add up - Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  :)

Just to clarify ......

Are you talking about the actual bumper bars or the black bumperettes on either side of the number plate ...

As hugh said ...... highly unusual to fit US bumperettes to a RoW car unless something happened and that's all that was available at the time ....
