Full Customised 911 Build V8 Twin Turbo

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, new to the forum, have spent the last few hours reading the various threads and posts in the forum and you all seem like a nice bunch of people, so thought I would share our build with you all!

i know some of you are going to hate us, and I'm sorry not sorry, for what we have planned. But we just wanted something 'different'.

My other half Brad and I own a performance workshop in Adelaide called Enhanced Automotive. 10 years ago we had a tuff street car pushing 1000hp. Brad specialises in LS Holden Engines and Vehicles. So we both currently have 6.2Ltr V8 Clubsports. Brad use to drag race a 440ci VY SS Ute, then moved on to racing Superbikes, and then had the itch to play with a car again....

You can now see where this headed can't you???

So we started looking for a body to customise/highly modify. I was given the choice of 3 cars, 2 I didn't pay much attention too, the third, was my Porsche. When Brad said Porsche, the very same model popped up in my mind. There was no hesitation, I told him to buy it. I never thought I would own a Porsche, but I do now!

So she is/was a 1981 911 Targa SC with a 993 conversion done... She HAD a 3Ltr Air cooled engine, no rego and she had certainly seen better days, which made the decision to modify her very easy.

We thought the task was simple, get her registered and enjoy her for a bit before the modifications began... How wrong we were.....

here she is on our dyno for a before 'Enhanced' run:

In SA, any car that has run out of rego has to go for a numbers check, (tier 2) inspection, we thought, easy, numbers all matched... Brad called the inspection place (Regency) and spoke with them about the track of the rear wheels as we knew they would be out, they said yeah no worries get that in spec and then we just check the Australian Compliance Plate numbers against everything else and off we go, Brad said, where is the Australian compliance plate, this only has Porsche compliance, he said, oh right, well to get the paperwork to get a Australian Compliance plate, bring it in for a tier 2, we will defect it, give you the paperwork to fill out to get a compliance plate, and then come for a tier 3 (full inspection). We were like, what??? Really??? She is never going to pass an inspection.. She needed all new bushes, new brakes, panel repairs, the list just kept going... So we scrapped the idea of enjoying her standard and called the engineer.

When our engineer first spoke to Brad about his intentions, he said your crazy, but it can be done..

So the paperwork was completed and 4 weeks later we got governments consent to do the following modifications:

Fitting of a LS Engine, Twin Turbos, Increased Wheel size and track, the fitting of a Racepack Dash just to name a few...

another requirement from the government was that the car undertook a Chassis Twist test.

She passed the requirements set out by the government. Yay!

So next, the mastermind behind Enhanced Automotive decides he is going to design and produce his very own V8 out of Billet alloy as we have our own CNC machine.

Hows he doing it? Well being a mechanic for as long as he has, he has a good idea of all the weak points in the LS series engines... so he is designing his own engine, keeping the LS base, but fixing all the weak points and bad design areas of the LS Series engines.

About a month or so ago, his blocks of billet for his engine and heads arrived at the workshop

E5166EDE-2E2C-40A3-BA6E-1031AF5E28B9_zps

And 2 or so weeks ago, the engine sold and the build begun.

4 days I spent stripping her, it was a mammoth task, but I got there in the end.

She is now at the sand blasters, getting all the sound deadener off of her, and getting a good clean.

Even though she passed the required torsion twist test, we are still going to put extra reinforcements in place. So the car has to be clean so the bracing system can be welded in.

Future plans besides engine and twin turbos are new paint job, full custom interior, billet mags, possibly sequential paddle shift, and that's all I can think of off the top of my head!

Looks very interesting. I know the LS engines are light, but any idea what the weight difference between your LS and the stock 3.0?

Keep it coming.

Thanks MFX, off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure the LS1 engine is about 40lb lighter than the standard 3ltr.

Interesting project and very brave if you're going to fabricate a V8 from billet!  But if you've got enough talent to do that, why not weld a coupe roof on it to give you 1.  more appeal  2. better torsional rigidity?

Welcome! I certainly won't hate you for doing this and in my mind there is no need to apologise. I love it when folks do stuff like this with Porsches--my purist friends hate it when I say stuff like this, but Porsches are just bloody cars and why people think they a sacred is beyond me. It's your car do what the hell you like with it. I can't wait to see this project evolve and good luck. Keep the pics and updates coming through.

The out of reg story for SA does not sound right to me? I have had over 50 cars in SA and have never heard of checking numbers on out of rego cars?

Shady, I didn't write it correctly last night, we purchased the car from interstate without rego. My bad for the badly written section about rego.

Rob, we certainly contemplated doing this but I really wanted to keep the convertible aspect. So we are going to do a custom fibreglass roof that clips on and off of the car, sort of like a hard top on a ute.

We have already copped a lot of crap over doing it, but on the flip side, a lot of positive feedback as well. I guess your always going to have people that like originality, and some prefer full custom. Everyone is different.

Brad has asked me to ask you guys a question:

Does anyone have any measurements on Porsche gearboxes? Or lead us in the right direction to find out measurements?

Would the Porsche Carrera Cup gearbox physically fit into a 911?

Obviously with the turbos and HP from the engine, the Carrera Cup box won't handle it, the gearbox will have to be highly modified, but we like the idea of sequential paddle shift.

I wouldn't be so sure it won't handle the HP with some tweaking.

The Cup Trans is the same unit therefore same dimension as the 6 speed run in GT3/GT2 etc. Look at this forum for information on Cup http://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-cup-cars-151/

I would normally say get the wallet ready, but by the looks of the billet motor you are way ahead of us... :D

Thank you so much Edgy, much appreciated! ?

tuthills in the UK developed or were developing a 5-6 speed sequential  915.

though if you are going bespoke on the engine why limit yourself to a P box?

Lol, I really need to get Brad to answer these questions, lol

Ill ask him and get back to you.

We are pretty sure the gearbox won't handle the HP, maybe I should explain the build in more detail..

We know factory LS engine blocks can withstand 1000hp, aftermarket LS blocks are only good for 1500hp, due to engineering with weight characteristics, a cast iron block isn't allowed,so our only choice was a full billet engine.

The turbo size are 2 x PT91 (equivalent to GTX47) Each turbo is rated to a maximum of 1650hp, which in total maximum potential HP of 3300. Hence now the main hurdle is the gearbox and what we should do there.

i would have thought the targa body would be your limiting factor with that kind of target hp! or the cooling system!

We are doing full bracing of the chassis with chrome moly. ?

As for cooling system, I have no idea what he is doing with that!

So to be clear, you want to be making in the neighbourhood of 3000HP?

I believe so... ?

Hay E-A

I am currently involved in V8 911 with a mate of mine who has a mid 70s 911 wide body (993 update) with a LT1 383, 915 gear box. This is car was probably too good for such modifcation being a sunroof delete wide body, but it is LHD, and the conversion was done prior to him getting it.

Keeping it cool is an issue, the car runs a radiator almost lying flat under the front hood, as a result air pockets are a drama.

We are currently looking into two small radiators mounted inside and on each side the front bar, like 964-993 do for the oil coolers and A/C condenser.

I have driven this lets say "Animal", it has an estimated 450 plus HP, I have driven some unruly cars but this thing takes the cake.

Never have I driven a car that really wants to kill you. With your projected HP I can't even imagine what it would be like.

This car is already engineered here in Vic, future plans, like you is to fit a lighter LS and a couple of turbos, God knows It does not need any more power but that's my mad mate.
