Prices 912 Donks and Gboxes and Skills Costs

Recommended Posts

A how long is a peice of string question?

Whats the value and price of a fresh/recent built , well sealed 912 motor nowadays ? Pretty normal tune

If its peppy with a Tune and has been worked blue printed etc how much higher do prices go…?  With good rods , crank pistons , cam etc?

Also 741 transmissions ? Values?

If you were to by a shitter 912 motor .. are they as exepensive or would you need a Posrche tech or juts a good engine builder to do it, is it that specialised?

Don't trust anyone but a specialist is my opinion mate

Values are up in the air depending who is selling, though in my limited experience, this is what I've seen in the past 2 years

A complete but rebuildable 912 engine $5k. Condition inside unknown

A complete 356 that had been rebuilt I could have bought for $5500 or thereabouts. Though I would have to convert it to 12volt (still kicking meself for not buying it)

A fully rebuilt 912 without carbs and tinware $8k US

Rebuilt with carbs ready to drop in $11k US

My engine, I had a quote of $20k to 25k locally in SA (nearly died when told!)

Another quote was half that, though it required head repair work, valves, oversized barrels and pistons to 1780cc etc etc $11k

I was told very recently that a certain very well known Sydney Porsche repair shop quoted $35k for a full rebuild on a 912 engine. Yikes!

Bank on $5k for a start point (with condition unknown) and 10k to $15k for a full rebuild. Any more, and you're getting shafted. If you do head down that track (Reckon I know where your head is at with this) I can ask a mate in Victoria who is an air cooled and Porsche guru to build you an engine if you source one, and if he isn't snowed under with work and wants the job

Good call Lee

i have been quoted anywhere between $5 and $10k to rebuild my 356 engine depending on how bad it is

912s aren't any different. I bought the one I have in the garage for $2.5US couple of years ago and it had no carbies

Good input gang .. looks like those cheap Qantas  flights to L.A seem more and more alluring to go on a parts binge.

It allways fun to see the security scanner crew…in the airport with me

I just have had this, as I travel back from europe with an extra suit case with full brake setup for the Esky and some quaife gear sets , pagid pads and some other finny shaped bits  .. quite funny really but  with more than $2000 savings and  almost every item I touch is way more reasonable.

They think Im a fruit loop , with switch gear , parcel shelves  $2-10 at the breakers yard..$200 on ebay..

That reminds me gotta get a bigger suitcase..or maybe I gotta go old school and get a trunk :)

PS how much does a 912 motor weigh will it go hand luggage

Maybe get onto Benton Performance in the US and bash his ear, as he's the 912 guru over there. Also try Roni (FIG) to see if he can source you an engine.  The US would be the easiest option mate. As you know, 912's are thin on the ground here, so engine options are limited. I'll ask around too if and when ya keen

I still have a "20 ways to get rich quickly and lazily" newspaper article I kept when I was 17. One of the suggestions was find an Aussie beach and stuff a suitcase with seashells. Then rock up to a "desert island" and set up a stall flogging them to unsuspecting tourists. People tend to be rather loose with cash when they are competing with others.

912 dont use  741 transaxle, that is 356.

912 and 911 transaxles are interchangeable, usually only ratio differences.

Yes sir .. pricing  a motor and setup for 356 build ..   Dont want to hack a car about .. but want some GO

Looking at local builds and prives vs going down shrink wrap build at 215bhp at 20-25k. Such as   http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/index.php/porsche-356/2430-performer#details

Sorry should have been clearer .. appreciate your eye on the details

I am not sure on Qantas policy, but the best thing about going to the US (at least on US airlines) is the baggage limit. Instead of the normal 20kg limit, each person can have 2 x 23kg (50lb) bags. I have been looking at shipping costs, and a return flight seems to be around the same price as shipping my parts one way!

912 cranks are coveted by 356 gents...

so assuming your bottom end is tight (otherwise there's 5k on a crank)  symsy then you've sidestepped a serious gutting.

A good typ1 engine guy will know how to build a 616 , but the issue comes to how much of the core engine needs rehab.

cores are cheapish ( but are climbing in price) - a spanky rebuild not so... though while you're doing, it consider twin plug fantasy and all the serious go hard fruit. There's a particular US parts purveyor you will want.

contact Stan Pobjoy - he's got a good set up to do twin plug. Uses Nissan Pintara dizzy and he has done so for a number of 356 numpties up your way.

good thing is he's almost local to ya.
