Could just be older pics...Amanda, you should go test pilot a few when you get a chance, will really help you decide on the ideal vehicle.

I bought mine a few days after it was posted on carsales and beat a cash buyer to the deal. I test drove it and by the time I got home had decided I had better put a deposit on it and went back the next day with a fairly large deposit. Had I not, I think I'd still be looking.

Sometimes it can take a while for the right car to come along and you will need to be ready to pounce on it. You have to be quick as the really great cars go fast.

Even if you aren't in the market right now, I have heard of some guys having waited 6 months or more before the right car came along...

Amanda, from what you have specified, a 964 manual coupe would be ideal. More modern suspension, A/C etc. 3.6 litre etc. Not floaty like the later models, has road feel, and your partner should not get car sick if you're not fanging around bends. A few coming on the market with the new model release and as people step up to the 997s.But Nick is correct. good ones don't last long on the market.

Cheers

Thanks Paul.. I agree. I think the 964 fits the bill perfectly. So I'll see what local ones pop up in the next month or so and will go drive one when I can! I also want my brother to come along with me, he's a mechanic (not employed as one anymore) so he'll be able to have a good look at it and whether he'd feel comfortable working on the car from time to time. I'd probably get it serviced by an Independant Specialist but get him to do the little things that might need doing.

Part of me doesn't want to go the Boxster route. I think its because I've been there done that as far as convertibles go. I also had a few unpleasant experiences in them which makes me nervous to drive one long term again. So yeh, I need to follow my head on that one.

Ignoramus... oh and a really drunken homeless dude. I'll explain...

Homeless dude - I'm driving through the CBD in a MX5 on King St. Stopped at the lights at intersection on Collins Street. I'm behind another car, and traffic is tight. Glance over to my right.. and this old homeless dude comes out of nowhere, screaming abuse at me and starts kicking my car.. he kicked in the door and then the rear quarter panel. I was alone and I'll be honest, I was terrified. He pisses off.. lights change, adrenalin is running. I then realise this guy has done lots of damage to my car.. so I went looking for him with the view of calling the Police. But couldn't find him. This wasn't a convertible issue, more an issue of being in a really small car and just wrong place wrong time type of thing.

I also had a huge fight with some idiot in a Lexus AWD when I was coming out of a car park once. Roof was down, car is low.. couldnt see what oncoming traffic was coming. He's behind me and of course he can see all the way to the moon. Only way I can see what is coming is to sneak out a bit, so I roll forward, he rolls forward.. I see a car is coming, I roll back and he goes mental. So he actually got out of the car and came over and threw a punch at me! Fortunately he missed me. I think he then realises what was going on, and he got back in his car. Once again, it was probably more an issue of driving a small car and just wrong place wrong time.

All in all tho, I just don't feel as safe in a car with a soft top :) these experiences have probably made me feel this way. I've never had an issue in any of my other cars either.

he threw a punch at you?? what?? over that!! no way!! damn there are some morons out there

As I said, there was some heated words. I can hold my own :) I suppose it was a road rage incident thinking about it now. People being impatient etc

And also, I learnt a lot from it. So I've never had a similar incident happen since.

Make sure you drive a few 964's. I may be wrong but I think Porsche didnt really get the aircon working properly until the 993. I know I spent thousands trying to get it work ok in my 930 and never really succeeded. Whereas my 993 is just as good as my 2008 Passat Aircon.

What? The 993 aircin works?

Seriously though I think a 964 is a great intro to the marque.

Yep absolutely it works and very well. All I was saying was if one of your must haves is good aircon then the 964 may not tick that box.....

There is no doubt though in other ways they are a terrific car.

You must be lucky Chris, or the a/c in your Passat is shite b/c I've heard from other 993 owners that a/c still not as good as a modern water cooled car. Having said that, the only good drive I've had in a 993 was when a/c was not even a thought. Maybe the 993 owners I've spoken to need to get their a/c regassed.

Evaporator needs replacing, which is in the trunk..............which is behind the petrol tank............which has to come out..............along with some other stuff.................Porsche allow about 8 hours............................probably take me 15-20!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry about aircon Amanda. Get a crazy sounding exhaust and keep the windows down in summer!

So sorry to hear that. I agree can be vulnerable sitting in a low car when someone standing over you.

I tend to try and make a huge scene and stop traffic so people become witnesses and hopefully the police are called. First thing I do is get number plates and ask people to be a witness before I speak to the perpetrator.

I don't move my car until the issue is resolved. I understand it may be different for others.

Glad you got out of it without personal injury. Understand about the convertible issue. That won't be resolved with a Boxster. I have found people less tolerant when I am in the P as opposed to a Territory. I think it is the 'f the rich a-hole' syndrome (pardon my French).

Good advice Theo, just took mine for a drive with window down. Needed to get rid of some frustration after a pretty crappy day. Oh that sound.......

Just home from work so a bit late getting on this thread - firstly Nick : you once again crack me up....birds??? Very funny.

The point raised is EXACTLY what I posted the other day. In my Captiva or anything else people have manners and give way- in the Porga, no cats Let's me in.

As for air-conditioning - it's so over rated. Mine is disconnected and I wondered how I would survive - take a glass of HTFU, open your sun roof and enjoy the exhaust tunes. The cars I grew up with had AC as an optional extra as it did passenger side mirrors and rear seat belts in some older variants. If it's still hot buy a dash board fan - just make sure it's swivels !

Have you not seen the Clarkson footage of him sitting in a side street waiting for some one to let him in? Its very true, I usually dont even bother to indicate anymore - it just gives a chance for the people to speed up and not let you in! In my wifes MG, the world stops to let you past - people look at you and smile.

I drove around a clapped out magna with a roof lining which rested on my head - EVERYONE gave way as the car was in such bad condition they all stayed clear with fear.

Drove around one of the sales girls Barinas for a day once - again everyone made the assumption I was a 18 yr old female sales rep and cut in and never gave way regularly .

On the bike at the lights - no probes - on the cycle it's on almost all the time.
