Ian, Amanda, I purchased the Non smokers kit from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PORSCHE-986-BOXSTER-996-CARRERA-NON-SMOKER-KIT-GENUINE-/360414088077?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53ea5a8b8d

There are various versions available. Thanks for the tips on embedding photos Ian, I'll put some up shortly.

Anyhow.. I test drove a 2004 S Tip on Friday, a 2001 S on Saturday and a 2002 S Manual on Sunday .

I a busy but fun weekend!

Anyway , even though the later car was "better" i.e more gadgets and bit more power etc.

I must say I did not find the differences (for me) from (latest vs earliest) enough to be to warrant a price spread of $10K+ .

So I am now getting a PPI (on the 2002) and going to leave some in the bank to cover any contingencies.

Sound thinking or have I missed the mark?

You have to work within your budget and allow some spare in case of any work / repairs which you would like to perform. Plus the registration transfer costs, not sure what they amount to in Vict? Personally, if you could go for a 2003 or later, that'd be better, only for the upgrades which were performed. Of couse, the price differential which you mention above also needs to be taken into consideration.

So I think that you are right on the mark. Good luck! Let us know how you get on!

Thanks David, looks good, I will go and check out what is required to swap over and if it is not going to be much drama will probably get one.

Agree with CAVER go for the latest one you can fit into your budget. Bit hard to tell if you are on the mark without knowing the price and details of the car your looking at, but if you have been watching the prices you should be on top of that.

As Amanda's PPI showed recently certainly worth doing, so your on the right track. Good luck.

hi awit

not sure if these links work but ;

I drove the following S's, just to see the difference between pre 2003 an post 2003

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-boxster-2004-12878896?ref=RecentItem

and

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-boxster-2001-13334539?ref=RecentItem

and this

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-boxster-2002-12694432?ref=RecentItem

for Non S's

this 2.7

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-boxster-2000-13026693?ref=RecentItem

and this 2.5 Tip

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-boxster-1998-13055428?ref=RecentItem

and two more which are not listed. 2003 2.7 manual ,and 1997 2.5 manual.

My very personal summary is I found the 2.7 manual to be a lot more fun (zippy) than I thought it would be

but I liked the 3.2 a little better. I could happily live with a later 2.7 though.

I did not feel as engaged with the TIP but knew I would really like the convenience and grow to appreciate it as well.

Hi everyone...Stephen, you have my alias wrong. Drop the "r". It's "Caver"...what I get up to on weekends, along with canyoning, skydiving and climbing.

Amanda, my Boxster is Midnight Blue. It really catches the light. From some angles it looks black, then a rich deep blue and sometimes a slight purple tinge. The interior is black and Madison Blue. As soon as I saw it I was hooked.

Apologies David. I had a typo moment!

Seriously guys what is with the pre 2004 cars here? Is it a budget thing or what?

I'd say it's a bunch of reasons. Personal circumstances! Depending on why you want the car, how often you drive it, how many other cars you have and most of all budget. Not everyone wants $40 k + tied up in a car, especially if it's not a daily driver. And yes we are talking about really cheap Porsches here!! Depreciation has put Boxsters in reach of people that may have only dreamed of owning a Porsche. I think it's great. And if one drives many and thinks a particular car is best or them, good on them! Why not bank 10grand and go on a holiday, or buy some new suspension or ? especially if you love the car you've found and are happy with it.

As I said its personal circumstances.

Some of the above may apply to my decision making in the future :)

Geez you sound like a Benz owner :P :P

Good job, Monty, all reasonable cars there,

For what it's worth the third one in would be my Porka of choice. Grey S from Bonbeach.

But you have driven them so you would obviously have a better feel for the cars in the flesh.

Honestly if you can get yourself into the S you will be better off. I was told if I purchased the Boxster (non S) every time you see an S your gonna say to yourself, ..maybe I should have gone that little bit further and got the S.

As of now with an S under me I know that is exactly how I would feel . That is not to put shite on the Boxster that's a great roadster as well but an S is a better package that's why it's dearer.

Whatever you decide though you will love it great fun car.

N.B. The S has an umbrella in the door sill on the passenger side not sure if the standard Box has that.

I have to use that to belt the women away when they try to jump in with me.

Not sure whether it is the S or me that is the magnet.

Its cos they know you have that Umbrella... we chicks dig good hair!

Not all S have the umbrella tho right? I saw one in the grey S manual but not the Tip Green S at Tellers. I must say, it thought oh cool a Porsche umbrella! Nifty!

Neither of mine had the umbrella. I understand you can buy it from PCM, they are not that expensive. Niko, I am convinced they come for the car and won't leave because of your magnetic personality and overly generous use of smilies...

And I understand about the money issue, I really do, but the amount of pleasure a newer car offers over and older car, and we are talking generation 1 vs. generation 2 or even gen 3 when talking '05 987, is worth paying a little more.

You are getting a more refined and evolved engineering solution, a more robust vehicle, less kms, maybe a better interior or a motor with a little more to give. Suspension hasn't had as much use etc, list goes on.

And you are going to keep the car for a few years so say if you keep it 5 years, 10k now over 5 years is not that much more for a much better result.

I just think you need to find the car that feels the best to drive, and is the newest with th e lowest kms. I have followed this formula all my life, have gone through many cars and can confidently say it has never led me astray. My suggestion is if you find something a little more that is a little better to drive and you like it a little more, buy THAT one, and drive it lots during the holidays and go for a holiday the following year.

I am not trying to tell you how to spend your money, just trying to convey that a little more upfront pays bigger dividends in enjoyment, reliability, performance and resale more in these cars that other brands.

And as you have mentioned Amanda, the money you save upfront on a cheaper car can easily be swallowed up by the 'hairy maintenance monster' down the track. So you spend as much (if not more) as you would on the older car as a newer car anyway in maintenance and rectification costs that you will not get back at resale time with an older vehicle.

If you are buying one to be seen in and to tootle around, and getting right into the driving experience isn't all that important, buy the non S car and do something else with the money you save. Or spend that on a newer year. Or upgrades or whatever. They are a fantastic and well balanced car with all the performance you need for a great day out with heaps of driving reward.

If you really enjoy driving and appearances aren't high on the list of priorities, and you enjoy the performance that a vehicle can deliver, the handling and acceleration and braking a car can be capable of, love winding mountain roads and seeing how close to the posted speed limit you can take the corners (especially on those special roads marked at 100 and there is no way a sane human can do those speeds), and all you can think of is the next drive in the thing, or when your mates tell you the mundane they got up to on their weekend and you smirk as you relive that twisty mountain drive you enjoyed with the top down in the sunshine, remembering the sound of the exhaust as you geared down in second to take a twisty set of bends...If you think you would be interested in the odd track experience, hill climb or some great low speed competitive events run by clubs, pay a little more and buy the S. You will not regret the extra spend.

As a footnote, forgot to mention before, having lived with the 986 S, 987 S for some months and the Cayman for a few days, that they are all seriously quick machines and take no time to generate demerits and can amputate your driving priviledge very quickly and without mercy on Melbourne roads.

Totally agree with you Amanda, I was tossing in my 2 cents worth for anyone that is unsure which way to go.

Well as per our conversation Nick... I know all too well how quickly one can lose points. The GTI was bad enough for that.... I'm still waiting for the mail to come  and I won't be putting down a deposit on anything until the mail comes, cos eeeks I'm still not 100% confident I'm not about to lose my licence - and that is very embarrassing to admit.

Fingers and toes crossed mail only brings the usual spam and bills.

No need to be embarrassed...all too easy to happen nowadays, especially with limits being reduced as they are all over the place.

I watch my speedo more than the road most times on city streets.

And the eyes on the speedo is a worry in itself isn't it... "sorry officer I didn't mean to hit the **insert item hit****, I was too busy following the speed limit and didnt see said item whilst following the speed limit" ugh
