Hi

Still trying to decide 911 or Cayman ....but i've been thinking about this 2008 Cayman S on CS...yes I know it's and auto going against the manual trend but..

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Porsche-Cayman-2008/SSE-AD-4771784/?Cr=10

Has anyone looked at this car or know any history...have been in contact with owner etc

What are your thoughts regarding price with low Km.

Thanks for your help.

Buying an Auto Boxster/Cayman IMO is a waste of time/money unless you plan to use it as a daily driver and encounter a lot of traffic on the way to work. The whole purpose of owning such a vehicle is to feel connected with the car, an AT will not give you that.

I think the price is about spot on, I paid about the same for a 2006 Cayman S last year with 31,500 k's except it was a manual and had factory 19 inch wheels and a few other options. I've driven an auto (tiptronic) and didn't like as it sapped the performance a bit and I generally don't like auto transmisions. If you can live with a auto before buying it check the service history (should be serviced annually regardless of distance driven). Interesting to note the owner has not bothered to wash the car or remove stuff from boot before photographing.

Thanks for the replies

Yes I thought the same regarding the photo's.....and yes the the auto is the only thing that puts me off.

I was going thru the service history and noticed that while it was under finance (5 years) it was serviced at Melb Porsche dealers after that for the last 4 years it's been serviced at a local country Auto service shop....not a Porsche specialist with only oil changes ticket off in the book but stamped??  Thoughts.....

If it's only had oil changes over the last 4 years that means a major service has been missed and that history will stay with the car forever.  A major service costs about $2,500 at a Porsche dealer, the intermediate services around $700. After looking a the photo's closely I note the car has no options, not ever coloured crests on the wheels. So the asking price is a premium price for a less desirable vehicle (auto) without full service history and no options.  If I were you I would wait for a good manual car, they appear every so often.

Have you thought about going to '09 and getting the PDK, that would be the only auto i would buy and you are getting the upgraded engine as well.

Or this for not that much more

Agree completely with Tingy, go to the 987.2 if you can stretch the budget a tad.    PDK would be ok, I have the 6 sp manual, and love it.

Good luck with your hunt.

Guys,

I don't understand the auto hate.  Sure I like a good heel toe as much as the next guy but the modern ones with the lock up converters give the same "connected" throttle feel when you're on it cornering and the revs are peaking.  Since about the mid 90's they're not shush boxes anymore.

Sure, they may be a touch slower off the line and the top speed may be a few mph down but that's balanced by other benefits, especially if you spend time in traffic or you expect the missis to drive it as well.

While I like all the PDK cars I've driven, do I really want to own an old car with one and the possible expense of repair that goes with them?  Especially compared to a manual or conventional auto box.

I reckon you will have fun in either, I certainly do irrespective if I'm in my manual or auto car.

I reckon the best advice is to buy whatever is in best condition and importantly what you can comfortably afford as putting yourself in potential financial stress is a folly.

I suggest you drive it and make up your own mind.  And as Peter H said, wait if you're not convinced as there is plenty around.

Lots of things confuse the young'ins ... like how to tie a shoelace and what is a public telephone? ..

After looking up that big word above ... I can't argue with you there ... might not like it, but can't argue!! ...

Only REAL men drive cars with Manual Transmissions... :D  Generally women love Auto Transmissions , that is why my wife refuses to drive my 987.2 Spyder...that in itself maybe a good reason to invest in a MT. 😉

For commuting and daily use, I'd be happy with a MT (even over a PDK). But as a toy, PDK/MT would be prefered.

I think for the traffic crawl, early PDK isn't the friendliest on clutches.

The 987.2 has less bore score issues apparently, DFI (so extra HP) and PDK option. If I could have justified the cost, I'd have gone for this.

Our 987.1 Boxster was manual, and management's daily drive.  She's not particularly keen to drive my 996 Tip (no manuals around at the time of purchase for a reasonable $).  When we looked for a 981 to upgrade the 987 we couldn't even track down a manual to test drive, and ended up with a PDK in any case.  Got to admit we now both LOVE the PDK, just wish it was available in the 996, Tip isn't a patch on it .....
