The great Porsche confusion!

Hi guys,

well in all honesty signing up to this forum feels like the first step towards me pulling the trigger on a car.

Short history:

I have been 'passively' interested in the cars for about three years now. Subscribed to Total911 and tried to 'get educated'. Stopped looking last year as was changing carear and lifestyle, but now things are back on track and more likely than ever as I do not need a daily driver!

Historically I have been a BMW guy, and have two wagons as daily drivers, but am going to sell one of them to fund the new addiction!

The fundamental issue, as I am sure so many go through, is that when you begin to fall in love with these cars and decide to pull the trigger, you fall into one of two categories (well maybe three, but let's keep it simple)

1. Tons of disposable cash walk in, get a new one and don't care

2. Reasonable cash, enthusiastic and passionate about the marque, but terribly confused on what year and model to go with.

I of course am the latter and have tried to narrow the decision to pre 1974 or a 964...

I have set a budget of $50k, ideally wanted to start lower and restore / hot rod to my liking, but not many cars floating around to do much to.

Well looking lately, there are a few that have caught my eye, and would love any advice.

This 964 looks great and style wise, right up my alley:

Or this:

There are a few 1972, '73 cars around but vary by modifications and price by about $20k. The one above seems a good price BUT this is where the brains trust comes in here, I have not enough experience in the brand to know the pitfalls...

Anyhow, long first post, but always good to let everyone know why I am here! ;)

Thanks in advance guys.

Jamie

Welcome, Jamie.

964 C4 and long bonnet RS rep.

Interesting shortlist!

Those cars are about as different in terms of driving experience as you could get in air cooled Porsches.

The C4 will be a relatively easy drive, as the driven front wheels will help to counter the typical rear engine driving of a 911.

The RS rep will give a much more unfiltered driving experience, and will immerse you to your ears in 911 handling foibles.

Have a look at the cars, and drive them. That will very quickly decide for you which direction suits you better. As has been suggested many times, a PPI (pre purchase inspection) when you are ready to take out the cheque book can save you a lot of money.

Thanks for the fast responses guys, much appreciated B)

I actually made a mistake on that 964 and posted too early, I am not after a C4 just looking for the 2 wheel drive experience ;)

Shame that 73 is in NSW, I would like to have a look over her... The issue that a newb like me has is I have nothing much to compare her to... Have driven a couple of 964's and 996's but that's it! Nothing old...

Interesting you think it looks like a pretty good deal, I thought so also, but am notoriously sceptical about cars and the world, which I should be, as when I have sold cars they are always a good deal and straight... just need to be more optimistic!

There was also these two for $10k and $20k more respectively:

So anyone got preferences or thoughts?

Hi JD,

Welcome to the forum!

As most of us on here, I look regularly at Porsches for sale and generally can always find info out about specific cars (previous owners, history etc.) - its a close community so great place to start if your looking for advice. Best of all everyone has their two cents - here's mine!

Like yourself I was after an early 'chrome bumper' Porsche when I first started looking. The more I started learning about early 911's the more I appreciated the value of the 'impact bumper' cars of the post 73' era. I must say I like all the cars you have posted, the only thing is that you are paying more on all these cars for some non-original guards and a spray job. If you are set on the look your after than thats fine, but I would encourage as the others have to take them for a drive - at the end of the day you can turn pretty much any 911 into a 'retro' rs look, it whats on the inside that counts!

Cheers, Hugh.

This one for Comparison, has been at Lorbek's for a while.

good hunting, we've all been there.

Thanks for the post Steve,

I saw that one, love the interior ;)

However more spendy that I can justify right now. The wife is already looking at me sideways on this one, as she knows it's a pure toy and she is conservative! If it was a new car that was not a pure sports car, she would have no issues!!! All perception I say!

Hi Hugh,

thanks for the warm welcome!

That's why I am very much after your experienced opinions on certain cars. This raises the most interesting question on the older ones, going for a bigger motor like a 3ltr and someone who has hopped it up, does that represent better value for the money?

Also, for example on the first one I posted, do other feel it represents good value? Of coure without a test drive and proper inspection done it is first impression, but if I were to fly up to view the car it would need to be very much worth the time and money!

Flying there (here) and back is a $175 job if planned correctly which may be loose change on the long run.

Do a same dayer - if you need and over nighter PM me as i can get you a hotel room down town on mates rates.

You are of course completely right, just that dam tyranny of distance always makes you think... Also I would be more attached to purchasing if I made that trip!

Hi JD!

Welcome. I am going through what you are at the moment..where do I begin? / wife thinking you are having a mid life crisis etc etc. I am hopefully in the final process of purchasing a 944 and have to say the searching for a car has been lots of fun and very interesting. I know so much more about the cars from reading this forum and talking to the members.

As Doish mentioned Caver & I flew down to Melbourne a few weeks ago (risked it with Tiger and only costed me $110.00 return but survived!) to take a look at a car. Whilst it wasn't the right car for me the trip was worthwhile. Another bonus was that I got to meet many of the members of this forum for lunch which was fantastic.

As everyone has mentioned above, you need to drive a couple to get a feeling for what is good/bad/ugly and what you want. I thought I wanted a 928 but after driving one realised it wasn't right. I have driven three 944s and each was quite different in terms of the drive and condition. I now have a much better idea of what to look for and what is a good car. If you can, try and bring along someone else to take a look - thanks Doish & Caver. It is always good to get a second opinion and hopefully they will pick up things that you don't.

If not are not about something sure post a question here. This forum is fantastic with so much passion for the brand and is an amazing source of knowledge on the cars which will help guide you through the process. The guys I met for lunch in Melbourne even offered to look at a car for me if I found another in the area to save me flying down. Whilst I am not an expert I am sure if you found a car for sale in Sydney a few of us would be happy to take a look and give you some feedback.

Lastly, when you find a car get a PPI done. Mine is booked in for next week @ Hamiltons so fingers cross for good news! If not I will keep searching.

Good luck and have fun looking.

Steve

Hey Steve,

thanks for the response, it's comforting to here!

I know from other varied hobbies that if you are into something e.g. truly passionate, the only way to get the knowledge is to join up with people who know more and are passionate also. Did it with model engineering many many moons ago and then large scale RC, the forums actually taught me everything - even race porting a 2 stroker with a dremel!

Anyhow I think from even the responses here that I need to firstly drive a 964 again and then drive an older RS replica that I am looking at and make that my first decision. I am very much after a 'look' as I guess we all are, and I love the older hot rodded look of some of these '70s cars. Also it is amazing how I once truly loved the 993, but three years later and it has all switched for me to the 964!

Weird.

Well I can only keep looking, lurking, reading and trying to work out what is a good deal, and what is not ;)

One question is, who would you guys recommend for a PPI in Sydney for these two cars if needed?

All the good ones are in NSW dam it!!! ;)

Hi JD,

I also like the look of the two cars you have selected above. Love the duck tail.

On the PPI, I'll jump in before James does! I am getting mine done at Autohaus Hamiltons and I know Doish & Caver get their cars serviced there. I believe that there are a few other Porsche specialists in the same area (Northern Beaches) - PR Technologies & Buchanan Automotive. The only one I have had direct contact with is James & Tim @ Autohaus Hamiltons and they have been great with all of my questions. I am sure others on the forum would have a better idea and can share their recommendations and experiences.

Good luck with the search.

Steve

Wayne wheels and deals in quite a few 911's. From the two times I've met him he seemed like a stand up guy. I've been to his house once to look at a SC and although I didn't buy the car he was good to deal with.

*Note he is not a mate of mine and I've not talked to him again since looking at the car a few years ago I just remember talking to him about the car.

JD, what are you intending to do with your future 911? Race, sunday driver, daily?

964 will have half decent aircon, power steering, an airbag (if it's a later model) and may be a better proposition if you intend on driving it often compared to an older car on (sometimes) temperamental carbs and 915 gearbox, no sound proofing, etc.

I have noticed a few from this seller (Wayne) from time to time. Mostly have been older cars, all seem to present well. I'm sure James would know something about his cars. Isn't that right James? JAMES?

Hugh, I can confirm that the Gulf car has been in the Autohaus Hamilton workshop recently.

I don't see a rego for the white and red car, so I can't tell you anything about that one.

You'll understand I'm reluctant to give details - not because there is anything to hide, it's just that I'm not sure that I'd be too tickled with the history of a car that I owned being discussed in a public forum.

Jamie, if you want to know more about the car's history at Autohaus Hamilton, give Rob a call on (O2) 99O5 1455

Hey Randall,

I really want to be able to go to a few track days in her, but it's unlikely I will get 'hardcore' in the short term as have a young daughter, play golf most weekends and have two other sports that I am bery active in.

It's one of those things that I think if I get into it the bug will come, but baby steps as once I get the first, the hope is that it's a lifelong passion and racing is a part of that passion.

As for daily driver, I work in the city now so will only be using it on weekends if at all.

The KILLER point is however... and wait for it...

I have no off street parking.

I KNOW I KNOW
