Pauly Posted 7November, 2013 Report Share Posted 7November, 2013 So, continuing the story then…. I blame the introduction of Group B rallying in 1982, the same year I started driving…. It looked so easy on TV! After being severely chastised by my parents for my recklessness, they decided I did not deserve their financial help to buy another newish car, but instead they let me buy my step-mums old LC Torana for the bargain price of $400, with stern instructions to take it easy. To their horror, I installed a yella-terra head, twin strombergs, pump-up rear air shocks and a big stereo Here it is at Lakeside, circa 1983. Nothing like a three speed column change on a track. That makes me wonder how my mum would feel if she knew how powerful my car actually is. I was surprised she actually let me drive it as my first car. It didn't bother my dad. He enjoyed upgrading it as much as I did. I just haven't told my mum that i can do 100km/h to 160 km/h in 3rd gear in 4.5 seconds (logged) She did tell me off when i first drove the car home when the boost came on a little. That was the first and last time she's been in the
Dubai944 Posted 7November, 2013 Report Share Posted 7November, 2013 Based on my early demonstration of driving skill I think my parents were convinced I was going to kill myself early. Now I have my own teenage son who has just started driving I can see how I must have stressed them out, but at the time I thought they were just being boring! When I saved enough to replace the Torana, I was still living at home. My Dad told me I had to buy something that wasn't too powerful. I said what about a Cortina then? Having owned an old Mark 1 Cortina in the 60's he thought that was a sensible choice. But that wasn't quite the Cortina I had in mind…. he nearly had a heart attack when I took him for a drive in my new TD Cortina 4.1 litre with 4 speed manual. Now that thing was the ultimate sleeper, great power to weight! I fitted Lovells uprated springs, sway bars and Koni shocks and a bigger carby. Here it is - can the Southerners guess which track that is at? Check out the typical early 80's motley track day line up! There is even a Pantera hiding behind the white RX7. Pauly Posted 9November, 2013 Report Share Posted 9November, 2013 As soon as you said cortina, Before i continued reading, I had that feeling it would have been a 4.1L My dad had the TE 4.1 In that same green colour. I've heard some stories about that car. After that car he bought his 924 in the late 80's He still has the 924 but the cortina is in petrol heaven now. Niko Posted 9November, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 9November, 2013 This kacklewagen looked absolutely stunning. Actually met the bloke who made this back about 30 years ago. The car is fully metal. The rear of the engine cover of the car is actually shaped from the what used to be the roof. New owner has had it for 15 years and it stays in the garage, only comes out on very rare occasions. Original plates still on it. Colour is candy apple red. The bloke who made this has not done another project since this one, but is now thinking of doing something else, possibly in the Kombi van type thing. Watsonia Street Car show today. Russ Posted 9November, 2013 Report Share Posted 9November, 2013 impressive metalwork to make all that out of steel! but I'd rather copy an original than make something like that...

Dubai944 Posted 10November, 2013 Report Share Posted 10November, 2013 One more post to complete the first car story. I soon realised that I wanted something that handled a lot better than Toranas and Cortinas. I consider my next car, my first real car, which I bought just after moving out of home at age 19. This 240Z was the first car I actually loved. I did my first engine conversion and stuck a 302 Windsor in for good measure. Went like the proverbial off a shiny shovel. That was 29 years ago and I have had a long list of fast and highly modified cars ever since . My Dad still thinks I'm irresponsible!
Niko Posted 10November, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 10November, 2013 Always wanted a 240zee. Amazing how many people on this forum have played with Dattos before graduating to porkers. 302 Windsor.....Yikes....

Dubai944 Posted 11November, 2013 Report Share Posted 11November, 2013 ^Nice. Big 6 cylinders in smaller cars was a great formula back then! Kept the V8s honest. The Chrysler Centura with a 4 litre hemi was another good one, not as nice looking as the Cortina but just as quick.

Niko Posted 16November, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 16November, 2013 Nice list Ben, interesting one there for me is the GTO GALANT import. A mate of mine also got hold of one of them back in 1972/73 which he actually raced once or twice in street class at Wanneroo, I think I have a photo of it somewhere...had those godam awful mirrors on the front guards from memory. Think it was an iridescent greeny sort of colour and there was only supposed to be a couple in the country. Nice car though, and was very special back then. Interesting variety of the other cars on the list.
BENC4S Posted 20November, 2013 Report Share Posted 20November, 2013 Niko the GTO was an awesome car, looked a little like a mini Mustang, and you're right there were only a handful in the country. Unfortunately for me the car was rear ended while I was sitting in traffic one day damaging both front and rear end.. Mine didn't have the mirrors thank god but yes some did ! Mine had an aftermarket metallic maroon paint job that was pretty schmicko when I got the car... I really loved that car ! I sold it with both bumpers needing repairs but other than that it was in great condition !

LeeM Posted 21December, 2013 Report Share Posted 21December, 2013 My first was a Blue Mk2 Cortina I saw in the local paper for $300 I took it for a test drive on my own not long after getting my P plates, went around the corner and tried to do a burnout in it (I know, in a Cortina?) Anyway, I got the wheels spinning, or so I thought, looked in the mirror and saw a great cloud of blue smoke and thought 'Yeah baby, I want this!' We negotiated $275 and I was now the proud owner of my first car with my own cash I worked hard for. 30 minute drive home, pull into the driveway, clunk clunk screech pop! A pool of oil and what we later found out to be very worn piston rings and a fried clutch ended up costing me lots more to fix! Dad wasnt that happy honing the bores with wet and dry and CRC for a while! Poor bugger. Had that for a year then bought a mates 'Nugget Brown' (brown with gold metallic) MK2 Cortina with cream vinyl roof. Drove that for a while, and whilst on a cruise with some mates in the country, I found a beat up Escort panel van in a dodgy garage with the owner being a one eyed, one armed freaky lookin dude that greeted us! We had a look around the thing, and when I popped the bonnet, there sat a lovely twin cam motor with the words Cosworth on it! I knew that had some sort of 'It's a good thing' kinda vibe, so after freaky lookin dude told me it was his son's but he 'carked it', I could buy it for a couple of hundred bucks. Done deal, drove it home and my mate drove my car. We did an engine swap a few days later and loved every minute of owning that Brown car. Another mate had restored a Mk1 Cortina (you should be getting the idea I quite like Cortina's by now! I still do) that had been made to look like a Cosworth race replica, and I wanted it so badly I did a straight swap for mine. Done deal! 2 days later, I got T boned by a copper who was very drunk and ran a stop sign! I was charged with assault on an officer of the law (I did get out of the wreck and smack him once or twice though) and he got away scott free. No insurance, neither did I. Fabulous! Then it was a succession of RX3's and 4's, to Monaro's GT Falcon replica's, 66 Chev, 55 Belair original black and immaculate for $4500 (still kicking meself for selling that one, and the Monaro's!) and gawd knows what else I bought and either blew up or sold. Then it was onto bikes. I think at last count I was up to about 40 or 50 from my hazy memory. 125 Suzuki's to racebikes like my R1's, FZ1, which is a naked tourer with an R1 motor basically. My mate has just offered it to me to buy actually. 180hp. Mental wheelie bike that i did 38's or 39's around Eastern Creek with. I actually had that detuned to race, as it had so much power I couldnt use being as I usually raced Twin cylinder bikes, and wasnt used to bikes snapping sideways in 4th gear, warp factor 6! Also had a 916 Ducati which is just........ugh....LOVE is the only word I can use there. I used to house it in my living room in my one bed unit. I want another one that I can just park in the man cave and just look at it. Throw in VTR Honda's, Yamaha TRX 850's (a very underrated bike I won the SA state Thunderbike title on, and it was stock with just bigger carbs and slick tyres!) and whatever else I have owned in the past. Got into VW's a few years ago and have had 59 and 63 beetle, slammed ofcourse, 64 and 70's Squareback wagons, a Karmann Ghia and a Splitty bus. They have led me to here, my dream car, a Porsche, and I'm happy

Niko Posted 22December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 22December, 2013 Harold, nice varied collection. The DATSUN BLUEBIRD....was that one of those P410's or similar? round shape type? I think Doug WHITEFORD drove one at Bathurst in the good old Bathurst days. Good to see a bit of grounding there with what is a favourite brand amongst us Nissans and Dattos

It is interesting when you do this, I keep remembering cars I had forgotten about. Like the 1977 Triumph Stag I bought. After a year I put a 4 litre V8 into it. Had so much low end grunt and eliminated the water pump problems Stag's suffered from. Also had a new Triumph sedan in 1979 but I forget what the model designation was. No wonder I have no money. I can honestly say I have wasted more money on cars than anyone else I know. If I paid $10k for it, it was worth 5 the next day. I guarantee I will think of cars I have owned and have forgotten about for the next year. Just remembered I bought a Ford Laser Ghia back in circa 1982. I am going to keep updating the list as I remember as I find it so interesting.

If I paid $10k for it, it was worth 5 the next day. There is a bloke called Stan HOLMES who used to live in Dingley here in Melb. He is/was the guru for the twin "su" type carbs on jap cars. I restored a 180B SSS some years back and dropped the carbs off at Stans. He had the original Bathurst 410 sitting in his back yard. Someone had butchered it and had stuck a V8 in it somewhere along the line, but when I seen it, the V8 was gone and just a sort of empty rolling shell. Some history there. (Stan then became better known for reco'ing WRX rally car gearbox's.) Great bloke. heheh, I along with a lot of others I would think would agree with your comment on re selling of the 'dream cars' we used to own. Flatout Posted 23December, 2013 Report Share Posted 23December, 2013 Might as well join in the mix, although my list is not as comprehensive or impressive as some I've seen! 1. 1980 Holden Gemini (big block 1800!) 2. 1987 Subaru RX Turbo (Subi's 1st attempt at 4wd turbo) 3. KE35 Corolla, twin cam 1800 off it's head. This thing was a bucket, but lots of fun when it was working. 4. 1988 Mazda MX6 Turbo (Surpisingly quick) 5. KE20 Corolla, 13B extend port, cage, etc etc (later became Grimas if anyone knows it) 6. 1988 BMW 325iS M-Spec (great car although I got car-jacked in it) 7. Series IV Mazda RX-7. 13B Mild port turbo etc 8. 1996 Audi A4 S-line, beautiful car (especially on 18" BBS & lowered) 9. 2004 Toyota Prado (Family wagon - still own it) 10. 1973 Mazda RX-3 coupe. 13B Bridgeport, Quad throttle bodies, Supra box, 9" diff, JDM spec look etc. Spent a bomb on it. 11. 1984 Porsche Carrera 3.2 (Finally) Stock as a rock. Interesting fact: I've owned 3 turbo charged cars & blown up 6 turbo's
