What was your first car. Tell us your story

THose superbugs used to fly and unbreakable.,

I had a1500S I used to drag that one would you believe, well actually it was more of a stroll down Calder Park strip.

Geez Niko. Looked at that time slip and saw 11.32 and thought- Hell. That’s good for a notch! Then realised it was the time of day. Doh!

Did the hubcaps rattle like buggery in the boot as you left the line?

Some impressive names on that results sheet. Ormsby, Stoopman, Harrop, Nichols…..

Ha,ha, 11.32 I wish,.... the old green machine was a great car, kept it stock except for a set of extractors and muffler, and some fatties. I got the exhaust from HUME PERFORMANCE I think they were called, a N.S.W. crowd that advertised in Racing Car News or Chequered flag or one of those.

Thought it was hot sh#3 getting an exhaust from Sydney for it. Truth be known I could have picked up any number of similar if not better ones here in Melb. I think all I really wanted was to put that HUME PERFORMANCE sticker on my car.

I can't remember re the rattling hubcaps and chrome rims in the boot, I don't think the speed I was going would cause any great concern to them. You have to remember it was Calder Park in late 60 early 70's and if I had left them where my parking space was they wouldn't have been there when I got back. Many rogues and vagabonds around in those days.

Interesting you remember Lou STOOPMAN, he was around for years as you obviously know, and always a bit of a hero to me because he was always having a go at different motor sport stuff. I think his son(s) got into it a bit when he gave it away

I didn't mention him in my previous post (ORMSBY and HARROP) because I really didn't think anyone would remember him, he was to me anyway, a quiet achiever. Never met him though unfortunately.

Then we come to the last one you mention, NICHOLS, always getting his expectations mixed up with his capabilities unfortunately.

I have a copy of the one and only prize money I ever won at Wanneroo W.A. in my Datsun 1600, form the W.A. SPORTING CAR CLUB for the grand sum of $8.00.

Awesome Niko!!

$8 prize money is better than none. Most I've ever won was $1,300 in the reaction time contest at the drags with a perfect .000. Mostly luck but I was a regular .015 to .025 guy back then when I was doing alot of racing.

I also saw the 11:32 on the time slip and thought the same thing!

My list is rather short but this is a fun thread so why not.

1983 Honda Accord hatchback - 5 speed, 1.6L

1983 Honda Accord Hatchback.. First one finally fell apart after 400,000km so I bought another for $400

1989 Honda Accord Hatchback - Pop up head lights etc. Personally I think Honda was trying to imitate Toyotas Hachi Roku look.

1986 Honda Integra - DOHC PGM-FI ( big sticker on the side...) Great car, did over 300,000 with just basic maintenance.

1989 Honda EF8 CRX - I got the imported model with the B16A vtec motor. Terrific car. Wish I never sold it

2000 Honda Integra Type R - Again a terrific car. I still have it and may hold onto it for a few more years.

2004 986 Boxster S - OBVIOUSLY a terrific car!! Only had it for 6 weeks or so but have loved every moment of it. Besides the bill for the LN IMS upgrade but well worth the piece of mind.

I always said I would own a Honda until I could afford a Porsche and luckily things have worked out that way.

Well done in finally achieving the goal, you sure love those Honda's.

Lets hope you get 300,000 k's out of the Box with only basic maintenance. But probably not.....

Thanks Niko! Next goal is a 911 at some stage but for now learning about and enjoying the Boxster will keep me occupied.

Imagine if the Porsche was as easy and inexpensive to maintain as a Honda..!! But I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for in life so no complaining from me. There is a good mix of cars that have been owned by the various members here. I'm sure there would be a great number of stories to go with them all too.. :)

I resemble that remark!

because I really didn't think anyone would remember him,
I'm older than I look!

That sideways Datsun pic - You seem to have got circuit racing confused with Round Aust Repco Rallies....

2. I'm saying nothing.

2. Ha Ha, Yes I was a crowd pleaser, that's what happens when you have no idea how to drive, all good fun though.

  • 8 months later...

Not a car, but my second Kart(I think it was a D6), my first was an old 70s Birel before a long line of Speed Karts. Anyhow the little dude in the leathers is me, with the Australian Champ at the time.

Check out the cap I have on :)

Chris, the guys name was Nigel Brocklesby, I bought my first Kart of him. He went on to race FF in the UK.

You are right that it is at the Oakleigh Kart Club.

I was a member at home in Gippsland also, but all the big guns raced at Oakleigh so we joined and race with them.

Racing at that place in the 80s was like the Aust Champs every club day.

Good times with my dad who would take me all over the state and beyond.

Wow, there are some impressive ownership experiences here!

Feeling very inadequate in quantity, particularly when you think how old I am and how many hours I've spent buying, driving and working on cars owned by others :

1981 Holden WB ute - Trimatic, noisy, hungry, wore cams, timing gears and valve seats out as thought they were made from pastry.  Had it during that great time in your life when you leave school and have no responsibilities.  Was so emotional when I sold it that the new owner told me to "go inside"!

1989 Toyota Cressida - wonderful "mini XJ6" that topped all the comparisons in Wheels magazine over it's model run.  Caught an overnight bus from Broken Hill to Adelaide to pick it up and drive straight back again.  Lovely lovely straight six dressed in Grandpa's cardigan.

1985 Porsche Carrera - Still so excited that I lift the dust cover and look at it every morning and night.  Have also been so surprised at how excited my friends, particularly my female ones have got about it.  Even the old guys at ISP last Sunday when I bought touch up paint were grinning ear to ear like schoolkids as they insisted on checking the paint code!

The only cars I want to own before I die:

993 Coupe

Suzuki APV Van - a modern "Handivan" about as wide as a wiz bin for when I'm in my 70's

(Had lots of work cars.  Favourites have been the last two VE Calais's.  Currently have a diesel Subaru Outback that I didn't really choose and I can't say I've become attached to...)

  • 2 weeks later...

I think i did alright for my first car. '86 944 turbo.. Still have it  ;)

Was looking at 944s since i was 17. finally found one and bought it 3 months before i was 18. In that time i didn't drive it until i was 18 because it spent it's time on a hoist getting cleaned up.

I did drive it up the block a few times. and did drive it back to the factory from the delivery depot (came from Adelaide) which was literally down the road from the shop.

So Straight onto my P's and i was driving a ~210 rwkw 944 turbo running on 15 pounds of boost  :D

About 3 months left on my P's and now it's got a little over 300 rwkw on 18psi and still enjoying it! There's also this "special" fuel called E85 which i can push upto 25psi and have about 350rwkws.

That said. Not all P Platers are "hoons" and are "shit" drivers that cannot drive a higher powered vehicle.  <_<

An amazing car to start off with.

My first car was a Honda N600. I have no idea how I got it now, but it lived on my lawn for 2 years and had a stereo fitted well before I got my license. I got my bike license at 17 and 9 months, and one day had the bright idea of putting my bike plates on it and doing a lap of the block. My bike plates had was **-666 so it sort of looked like a custom plate and because car was so tiny it didn't look too small. Anyway as soon as I pulled out of my street and stopped at the lights and a cop car pulled in behind me.... the plate fooled them and I quickly got car home and never did it again :)

My first registered car was a 74 RX4 4 door. Was an awesome car that went under the radar(looked like a 929) unless I was doing something, which I often was.

I briefly had an RX2 and then I got my 1969 KE10 Corolla *CARAZY*. I had the for about 17 years and then I got the 86 Porsche 944 Turbo I have today

My first car was a 1962 VW Beetle.

It was bright orange and in terrible condition but hey it was a car and I was proud that Porsche designed it

:)

One day all the brakes failed... so I managed to drive it to the nearest mechanic using the gears to slow down, and shutting down the engine to stop quickly.

And other time the wheel almost fell off... yeah was a hell of a shock !

Now all these many years later... I have a rear engine Porsche again !

^^ Yep, quality built car the 120Y.

But the most impressive feature I thought was that the radio was still working perfectly when I finally slid to a stop. I can still remember the song..Flock of Seagulls, "I Ran So Far Away". That's what I wanted to do when my Dad turned up to get me…!

So, continuing the story then…. I blame the introduction of Group B rallying in 1982, the same year I started driving…. It looked so easy on TV!

After being severely chastised by my parents for my recklessness, they decided I did not deserve their financial help to buy another newish car, but instead they let me buy my step-mums old LC Torana for the bargain price of $400, with stern instructions to take it easy.

To their horror, I installed a yella-terra head, twin strombergs, pump-up rear air shocks and a big stereo Here it is at Lakeside, circa 1983. Nothing like a three speed column change on a track.  :P
