Niko Posted 25December, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 25December, 2013 Couldn't help myself, once you start talking P510"s I get all reminiscent for the "old days" WYNNS SAFARI 1985. My DATTO. On those roads filled with big red rocks. Thank you for great Yokohamas Waiting for fuel at one of the outback stops. Peter M Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 Wow, there are some impressive ownership experiences here! Feeling very inadequate in quantity, particularly when you think how old I am and how many hours I've spent buying, driving and working on cars owned by others : 1981 Holden WB ute - Trimatic, noisy, hungry, wore cams, timing gears and valve seats out as thought they were made from pastry. Had it during that great time in your life when you leave school and have no responsibilities. Was so emotional when I sold it that the new owner told me to "go inside"! 1989 Toyota Cressida - wonderful "mini XJ6" that topped all the comparisons in Wheels magazine over it's model run. Caught an overnight bus from Broken Hill to Adelaide to pick it up and drive straight back again. Lovely lovely straight six dressed in Grandpa's cardigan. 1985 Porsche Carrera - Still so excited that I lift the dust cover and look at it every morning and night. Have also been so surprised at how excited my friends, particularly my female ones have got about it. Even the old guys at ISP last Sunday when I bought touch up paint were grinning ear to ear like schoolkids as they insisted on checking the paint code! The only cars I want to own before I die: 993 CoupeSuzuki APV Van - a modern "Handivan" about as wide as a wiz bin for when I'm in my 70's (Had lots of work cars. Favourites have been the last two VE Calais's. Currently have a diesel Subaru Outback that I didn't really choose and I can't say I've become attached to...) UPDATE! I'd forgotten this thread but am pleased to report that I bought one of "the only cars I want to own before I die" almost exactly a year ago now:1994 Porsche 993 - Mid-night blue coupe that took my eye the first time I saw it on Carsales. He wanted to much for it and I was for some reason nervous about buying a 993 as my first 911 so a photo of it stayed on the fridge for 9 months. A health scare reminded me not to put things off and the PO getting desperate for money (I thank his nagging wife every time I drive it!) all coincided in the same week so flew to Melbourne and drove it home over the weekend. Feels so modern compared to my C3.2. So I just have the Suzuki to go and my motoring bucket list is complete. So I have owned only 4 cars in 32 years of being licenced. Surely that's got to be a record!
WRC323 Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 Only a couple for me. First two weren't great choices but I learnt my lesson. 1980 Holden Camira 1998 Hyundai Excel 1992 Mazda Familia GTR (loved this thing, sadly written off on the Black Spur. It lives on via my username) 2005 Subaru Forester XT (Still own this) 2002 Porsche Boxster S (It's the GF's) Familia: Forester:

Stew F Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 White 1970 VG Valiant Pacer sedan. Original motor was replaced with a 265. Had a 4bbl Holley on a factory 4x manifold, mild can and extractors. Rear spoiler was put on by previous owner as well. Other than that it was all original. That was actually a really good car. Went like a cat shot in the cloaca. That was in 1981. If only we knew then what we know now. At the time my dad had a VH Pacer that he bought new through staff purchase at Chrysler. I remember the day we were on the way to a family crabbing trip and we had a drag on port Wakefield road, and both got pulled over by the police. It was pretty funny. The cops let us off because they couldn't get over the fact they just busted a father and son drag racing against each other. Mum was not impressed in the slightest. Harvs11 Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 That is very surprising T man, I would have thought a VC VALIANT, with pom poms around the back window and a box of tissues on the parcel shelf...... Niko, did you read that properly? It was YELLOW, nothing else matters.
Harvs11 Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 First car was supposed to be the Datto 1600 Dad bought new in '68. It was crashed beyond repair just before I got it. I ended up with a '73 Fairlane with different brown shades on every panel. Dodgy electrics, shit handling, slow and thirsty. But tough. Traffic parted when they saw it approaching. Probably scared of catching something nasty if they got too close. First day I had it, I spun on a wet roundabout. Last day I owned I it, I put the ad in the Trady, crashed it on the way to work, sold it that night. Phew.
Shady Speedway Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 1969 Ford 1600 Capri GT. Even before that time I knew the 930 was the top of the tree. It took 25 years but I made it!
JV911 Posted 18February, 2015 Report Share Posted 18February, 2015 TG Gemini - original 1 owner. Bought from an old bloke who's sadly had a stroke and couldn't drive it anymore. Red with classic 1980s brown interior. The original interior was soon retrimmed in grey velour and the engine was swapped for a G180 bored and stroked to 2 litres with twin webbers. Because of the high compression I had to add a dash of av gas which you could buy in drums from the local servo at the time. Made over 150hp at the wheels which with the standard exterior made quite the sleeper. At 900kg it ate SS Commodores and XR8s for breakfast
oldslappy Posted 19February, 2015 Report Share Posted 19February, 2015 First car: mk1 Cortina 2 door, in pretty sad shape when i got it. learn a lot from it though, I upgraded it to a 1500 GT motor, modified head, big lift cam etc. Still wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding though.... MackTheKnife Posted 19February, 2015 Report Share Posted 19February, 2015 1972 HQ Holden Kingswood wagon, nicknamed the hearse because the back seats were always folded down for my waveski. It was powered by a 202 cubic inch cast iron boat anchor via the slushiest trimatic gearbox ever assembled by Holdens finest. My year of ownership ended with selling for a 60% profit. That's right, I profited by $240 on the deal.
firstone Posted 19February, 2015 Report Share Posted 19February, 2015 XW Falcon 6 cyl column shift. I didn't see the rust when I bought it, 17 and knew nothing. Eventually I took it to a panel paint shop. He says, "yeah, we have a special tool to fix that, a windscreen wiper jack, we jack up the wipers and replace the car". I bought 4 more Falcons over the coming years. Looking for one without rust? They don't exist......

Aussie Alan 993 Posted 22March, 2015 Report Share Posted 22March, 2015 My first car was a 63 XL Falcon sedan, 2 speed auto which I bought for $30 at 16 years old. It had been stolen and recovered, the engine didn't run, it had the front right corner pushed in but NO tin worm. I didn't find out it had slight hail damage till it was home the next day. Over the next year or so I fixed it up and took it over the pits but is only a small part of the story. My neighbor's girlfriend would regularly come over and talk to me while I worked on it, see my dear mate Pat was like a bear with a sore head if anyone woke him up before midday on the weekend and she would finish her allotted household chores as quickly as possible on Saturday morning and then leave the house before her mum gave her some more to do. So I was always up early and into it and she had to walk past my place to get to his so would stop and talk to me from around 9.30 till noon almost every Saturday. I too had a girlfriend so there was nothing sneaky going on. So after while, he broke it off with her and because she didn't live too far away, I would see her around and we kept in touch, she made me promise to show her the car once it was finished. As it happened, I broke up with my GF a few weeks before finishing and registering the car so I did as promised, I took her out in it and asked her to be my girlfriend, that was 15/12/1979 and she is now my darling wife of nearly 32 years. As for the car, it was parked out the front in mid January 80 when an old guy knocked on the door and wanted to buy it, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse so it went. All up I have had 32 cars since that one, some really cool ones too but none have as good a story. Cheers Alan

Aussie Alan 993 Posted 23March, 2015 Report Share Posted 23March, 2015 Thanks Niko, we often look back in amazement as to how the threads of our lives are woven into a wonderful tapestry by one infinitely more knowledgeable and talented than ourselves. DJM Posted 23March, 2015 Report Share Posted 23March, 2015 Niko, yep another datto tragic: First car was a modified Datsun 1600 when I was 17. L18 with single 42DCOE Weber. Wow $3,000 and I'd made it. I'd been dreaming of driving for years and loved rallying. Got my licence on my 18th birthday and immediately headed with the boys to bonnie doon. One miserable day (too wet for waterskiing) we went "rally" driving. Suffice to say having had a licence 6 days, little talent or experience and a grunty datto with my mates egging me on, it ended in tears. Faster and faster through a series of gravel sweepers ended with a double barrel roll and my pride and joy was no more. Luckily no major injuries but picking windscreen glass out of our legs for weeks afterward. So began a long history of car ownership punctuated by several Dattos and recently a couple of porches. Here goes: 2. Datsun 1600 - new shell with bits from above 3. Datsun 180B SSS (first track days in this) 4. VL wagon on gas - uni finishes, sensible car to get to work 5. Datsun 1600 Datrally grunter - first time I had a car "on the side" 6. Escort Mk2 rally pack 7. st162 celica, cracker front drive chassis and rorty twin cam. Oh how Toyota lost their mojo. 8. Subaru Liberty RX wagon, great car, needed more grunt 9. Magna V6 (oh dear) 10. BA Fairmont - beginning of new cars for me 11. Subaru Liberty GT wagon, rev happy 2L turbo 12. Subaru Liberty GT sedan, they ruined it with 2.5 turbo, soft and slower, now Subaru started losing their mojo 13. Golf V GTi 14. Golf V GTi 15. Datsun 1600 track car (L20B turbo then 13B BP) - just for old times sake 16. E53 X5 - great tow car 17. E70 X5 18. Westfield Clubman Honda F20C - road/track car 19. F15 X5 wife's car, still got it 20. 964 C2 - finally a Porsche!! Sold it too quick. 21. M135i, LSD, 380hp chip - still got it 22. 996 GT2, EVOMS turbos, wastegates, tubistyle exhaust 480rwhp - still got it 23. What's next? M135i is getting tight as kids get older so..........?? 22 cars in 26 years of driving. Plenty of stamp duty contributed to govt coffers!
baso Posted 23March, 2015 Report Share Posted 23March, 2015 Figure as though I may as well get it over and done with. A few gems, and a few not so.. Actually surprised it has not been more than the following, but there is still time. Holden barina gsi - was supposed to be the answer to the Suzuki swift gti. Lotus developed engine and suspension supposedly ... 93 Mazda mx5 92 Peugeot 205 gti - wish I still had it but some nub nut ran a red light and cleaned me up (well the car) 98 Peugeot 306 gti6 VW bora v6 4 motion - was supposed to be a whole lot better than it was Subaru outback Toyota kluger (I know the shame but need transport for 4 mini humans and something that will be reliable given the wife takes said humans to her parents farm. I don't need a call saying she is broken down somewhere) 02 Boxster s Then there have been the cars I have almost bought - nothing sensible there!
