LHD / RHD conversion on 993

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have recently returned to Australia, am new to the forum, and am looking for advice from the Porsche community.

I have a very clean LHD 993 which I have now imported to Victoria, and to register it for road use I believe that I need to convert it to RHD.

Can anyone recommend companies in Victoria (by preference) or elsewhere in Aus with experience in this task?

It’s a great car that has drunk lots of cash in the last two years to bring up to standard while I was based overseas.

Given that, and a general respect for the quality of the brand, I don't want to punt into the unknown seeking a conversion shop from the phone book.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Bahrain 993,

Welcomer Home!

I don't have any experience in this issue of conversion, however I know that Alex Webster who has Porsche Classics, down in Frankston, either does conversions, or would probably know who could orchestrate a conversion. Classic Porsche work predominantly on long bonnet cars, and I know at least some of them are from the States.

I know of Alex through the PCV, and he is also a member of this forum. He may be able to help, but if not surely would point you in the right direction... contact details here. Otherwise a call out to George Cairns (who looks after many of our air-cooled cars), and he would have a good idea as well. 9758 5610

All the best, lets hope you're back out in your baby ASAP!

Cheers,

Kerry

imho,you are wasting your money

a c4s may make it "nearly "viable.anything else?

if you can store it for 15 odd years you won't need to convert it

Hey jnr356,

More details required please...

Why wasting money? Too expensive? Compromising of original integrity? No one around that could do the job?

There are those that would argue the longer term investment potential for the C2 rather than the C4... and who wants to sit on their 911 for 15 years?!

"Please explain..." ;)

Just typed ""left hand drive registration in australia" into google. Looks like Victoria is a dead loss, but if you look at registration in SA (best option) and WA there are conditional registrations available. Any friendly relatives?? ACT could also be a possibility, because of diplomatic vehicles.

Hi Kerry,

I can't speak for jnr356, but my interpretation of c4s is "Carrera 4S" rather than C4's, but we will have to wait for jnr356's response.

"wasting money": from a purely financial analysis, is it possible that the money spent in doing the conversion will not be recouped at re-sale...but then again we all know that our enthusiasm is difficult to justify on a financial basis alone ;)

Hi All,

As the car is here (and duties etc all paid) I view past money spent as gone given I am unlikely to re-coup if past outlay if I tried to sell as is. Therefore I am viewing the conversion as my 'cost' to own a 993 C2 of good known provenance. I realise that I may not re-coup costs on re-sale, but I could also never afford this car at current Aussie prices, so am unlikely to sell in a hurry (I wanted one of these for as long as I can remember...)

Cheers for the advice. Any other names etc still appreciated as I do my research on the conversion.

Many Thanks all for taking time to respond.

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, a big thanks for all your help.

I have a number of leads for the work, but life changes fast, and the conversion is now on hold following another overseas posting. I'll see how things are progressing and if I am lucky, they will change the law while I am away...

Cheers all,

Hi all,

Ive been folowing this posting and currently I live in Santa Monica, Callifornia.

I am moving to Sydney in the New Year and wanted to know about bringing my LHD 993 cab with me and converting it to RHD.

Does anyone have a contact in Australia who performs this conversion or know of anyone who has had it done to their car?

I would like to get an idea of cost before I transport the car to Sydney.

Regards

Greg

HI James,

Thanks for the guidance, I spoke with George and he basically said its up to a $45k job, a big undertaking and i would probably be tearing up a lot of money if i ever came to sell it. Its the parts ofr a 993 that make it expensive and if he was able to get hold of a second hand front end it would make a differnce to the price but it would probably mean more work on their part, but bring the price down.

Shame to I have one thats been looked after and has some nice subtle mods.

Cheers

You also have to factor in the cost of buying a good 993 over here though. For example: http://www.inventorysearch.com.au/view.php/ahhamilton_all_stock/1997_Porsche_911_CARRERA_S_White_6_Speed_Manual_Coupe/6144362/

Buying a nice local 993 is probably not a lot different in terms of cost, to converting yours.

Let's cut to the chase. Absolutely tragic waste of money.

993 cab in the States is worth about $30k for a good one.

Lets add the freight over and the $45K conversion and we are it about $80k.

Now let us say that you decide to sell one day. You will be lucky to get 60-70% of the value of a local car!!!

Don't mean to be abrupt but that's the reality.

I hear you and have come to the same conclusion...check out my baby on E-bay. Its the burgundy one with the lights on....you will see why i would prefer to bring it with me! If i have the money i would bring it over and put it on blocks for 10 years as ive heard you can get away with 25 years old in NSW, but figured i may even be able to come up with a solution in the meantime without having to change to RHD. Even so, im sure it will go to a good home here.

Cheers for your input.

Speaking of conversions,White 2S for sale has ben converted from a Tip to manual, still $100k AUD.

http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/porsche-911-carrera-1997-13845530?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=6&eapi=2&__N=1246+1252+1247+1282+1216+1622&num=15&silo=Stock&items=[Make:PORSCHE,Model:911 CARRERA,Series:993]&sort=default

Low ks, looks mint. But 100k for a converted one? Am I wrong in thinking that this is perhaps a touch High (like 15-20k High) ?

There was also one for sale a couple of weeks ago, Tip/Manual.

Hamiltons again in the $90's if I'm not mistaken.

Genuine S manual will sell at about $110K.

A conversion should not be anywhere near it.
