How Much Should This All Cost

Hey guys looking more in depth into slightly enhancing an 86 Carrera and have come up with a short list of a few small mods ive looked into but still unsure on price and workshop hours involved. Im still on my V plates when it comes to these cars

I've decided that the body on the outside will remain unchanged unless i can find some better mirrors i think there SCRS Cup Mirrors i see every now and again that look mental

But this is what id like to know pricing for if anyone could help out

Turbo Tie Rod Ends

Full Exhaust single outlet with headers

Braided Brake Lines

Wevo Short Shift ( what componets do i actually need for this ?Just a G50 shifter kit ?)

Suspension refresh ( car just to burn around in no track stuff)

Chip And Tune

Light weight fly wheel

Better Brakes ( the car itself is a narrow body with standard Fuchs)

Torsion Bar?

New engine Mounts

Many thanks Steve

Steve for a quick estimate of cost

Go to Pelican parts and use their shopping cart

Without a bit more detail and what your price points are...ass in the air , stiff breeze say 7-10k

A lot of variables including how handy you are will determine pricing

Hey Steve,

Parts wise, I have recently invested in some of the things you have listed. Rough prices from memory:

exhaust - SSI heat exchanges $1200, M&K muffler $800

Wevo short shift - approx $200

Wevo engine & gearbox mounts - $340 (total for 4)

Cheers

Antony

Probably on the money taking into account that an engine drop is required for those mods (wevo mounts, flywheel, clutch) but they are all sensible upgrades. Might not need torsion bars and I'd probably do more on the intake side ie MAF

Big red or boxster brakes 2-3k as is suspension

Aside: wevo billet shifter is a nice bit of kit. 1k though and I'm not certain they make them for g50s

My 2c - aside from better pads/fluid, a brake upgrade is unnecessary for a street driven 3.2.

I use Project Mu pads in my historic race car (group S) and recommend them.  Pagid etc have some good "fast road" pads too.

Steve,

I suggest you just buy a good car and drive it for a while. I think if it's in good condition you'll probably find that there is no hurry to modify it. The only exception to this I think is installing a Wevo shifter in pre '87 MY cars.

Hi Steve

I Just did almost all of what you want to do apart from the headers and LWF.

Cost

Turbo Tie rods $200

Torsion bars $800

Re valved bilsteins $1500

Elephant decambered ball joints $400

New bushes, engine and trans mounts. $500

Bump steer kit $400

Wevo $500

New muffler custom $1200

Wong chip $500

930 front brake upgrade second hand callipers $1100, discs $500, rotor hats $500, lines, $100, pads $125.

951 16x7 fuchs to fit the 930 brakes $800

Thats $9125 just in parts.

Labour to put it all together $3500. They did raise the spindles on the front struts as well, checked the bump steer was right and general made it drive great.

So whats that 13k ish. Wow hadn't added that up before. Probably shouldn't have done that, wowsers!

Some Porsche mechanics I've spoken to reckon they can do a clutch without removing the engine...

Hmmm..?

how do they get enough room in there to get it in? and align it? would be impossible on a sportomatic lol

i just bought the URO turbo tie rod kit for $80 out of the US, as well as a heap of suspension bushes, so it can be done on the cheap if you're prepared to DIY

That`s what i was looking for . Where did you get it done In Melbourne? It seems that there are only one or two places that specialise in this work that i have come across over the net

thanks Steve

Steve there are a bunch of independents who can do the work - including non P workshops who just do specialist suspension work.

However it seems you are less inclined to do the work yourself? and looking for a one stop solution?

Either way you can supply the parts at a saving and buy the labour only; though if you are at all curious and interested in DIY , Id suggest you ask for help I'm certain some tool handy gents on the forum will step up

There is an old supplier/workshop thread on PP Australia forum and here on PFA that nay assist with good shops local to you

PS I'd second Obruts comment re: your std brakes are good and can be much improved without having to swap out callipers etc.

cheers

Hi Michael your right a one stop shop would be fantastic . I don't mind giving things a crack myself but with a lack of experience and pretty much no real valuable knowledge on what it is i need / looking for i was thinking that going to a professional shop and getting it right the first time opposed to me buying copious amounts of parts amounting to nothing ( lesson learnt with other hobbies ) i thought if i went somewhere id be able to get it all sorted and set up correctly

Steve here what you are saying... however an opp to find out about your car and make friends :) exist...

put out a wanted shed buddy to help keep you company (warm) on those cold winter nights, good sense of humour looks not important....

You might be surprised.

Accumulating knowledge not hard. Spend your time looking at various threads on the subject- important is ability to see through the BS and be clear about what the issues with your car are, what you are wanting to achieve, what your budget is...very easy to get carried away. unnecessarily so

Think you'll get good advice and help if you ask for it

Also a priority list. Sometimes doing everything holus bolus can make it difficult to discern what were the real gains.

Steve, you are not alone here. I too am keen to learn more about my car but do not have the knowledge, tools or skills. I am constantly in awe at the things that many of the members on this forum do to their cars. I am going to repaint my window wipers in the next few weeks and for me this is equivalent to Calendonian doing an engine drop! I to am worried about stuffing something up but are also interested to learn more and the only way to do that is to give it a go. As Michel said there is plenty of knowledge and advice here to help out and I am sure I will be asking for some.
