persian Posted 9January, 2015 Report Share Posted 9January, 2015 Going to go have a look at this maybe today or early next week, what do you guys think? I'm no pro remember, I'm a real newbie aha! hit me with your thoughts don't be shy! i know its a targa but with my budget I can't be too picky! still looks nice thanks http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/royal-park/cars-vans-utes/1978-porsche-911-3-0-sc-carrera-targa/1054801671
tomo Posted 9January, 2015 Report Share Posted 9January, 2015 It looks clean,But it would be good if you could find an Adelaide Porsche/Guy to go with you or take it to an Inderpendant Specialist for the once over to learn what you can before any cash changes hands,Good luck
LeeM Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 As above. I would get a PPI by someone that knows Porsches mate
persian Posted 10January, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 yes for sure, I've been told to go to Buik motorsport? anyone heard of them or used them? ill do the full investigation before making a deal for sure
LeeM Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 Buik has a good reputation here mate The Porsche owners I have met only go to him. I'd be glad to have a look with you, but I'm no expert either. Motor and trans are the priority, bodywork etc can be fixed relatively cheaply. Check for pan and sill rust bubbles, and bottom of A and C pillars. The old caryard saying 'Aah, its just cosmetic' is crap! Take a fridge magnet with you to throw on the sills and lower doors to see if its thick with bog. Check to see if the engine lid is warm. Start the car whilst looking behind you to see if it blows smoke on start up. Any smoke, it could be very costly! Oh, and dont look at it on a day like this. SteveT Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 The interior looks pretty good but there's way more than that to. car!
hugh Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 It looks like a targa that was for sale here in Vic for several years (for less money from memory) Are they WA plates on it? May or may not be the same car doing the rounds being bought, fixed up, sold on.................? The work that's been done on the car is only as good as the person who did it - at the end of the days its a 30k 911 so there is bound to be some non perfect items/areas. If you like it buy it, be prepared to spend some money on it though. (my 2 cents)
Dreamr Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 From the description on the advert, I get the feeling that it may be a UK import ... The dealer is quite non descriptive ..... "original right hand drive" ......"not imported from the USA" ..... If it was Aussie delivered it would be in capital letters .... Rust issues are your biggest concern if it is from the UK ... Make sure you have a good look over it if that is the case ..... Good Luck ....
persian Posted 10January, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 Ive heard this before, why is that? Rust issues if its from UK?

Caledonian Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 Most of the above and any offer of help from somebody with more knowledge would a wise one to accept. My observations: SS exhausts- cat delete possibly mufflers and HE look like they have been painted. UK import rust stigma - less of a risk if the car was imported went it was young, not so good if recent. Interior - Red piping not to my personal taste but looks good and would have cost a bit. Floor pan - looks to be freshly painted/proof coated, why? The bling - air box, braided heater hose, chrome gauge surrounds, suggests a younger previous owner at some point. Wheels - Air cooled 911 without Fuchs is like looking at your Gran without a bra... JUST WRONG! Ad says " Air Con" Yes - looks to be missing a compressor to me, or did they mean take the roof off? Possible indicator to being a UK car too. Engine - looks oil free and clean as in just de- greased clean - but if claim of being overhauled and invoices to support thats a big plus. Overall if the body is sound and the engine/box are sorted then the rest it just tinkering at the weekends oh! Better check the wiring too if as suspected its a UK car it would have been harder too move quickly and possibly why it was traded to a dealer. But if the demand for these cars continues then that will probably change in time. Buying any used car is a risk no matter what your experience is, minimise the risk by doing your research and using your head and not your heart to make decisions. Another good organ is your gut, if it's telling you somthings wrong there usually is! As others have said, not the best AD but if never looked at house that matched the real Estates agents description Good luck and remember the hunt is just as good as the catch. Coastr Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 It's not just the salt in the uk. Most people don't have garages and it never stops raining. The place is hell on old cars. The only positive is that most interiors are in good nick because they see little uv.
