Just Paid a Deposit on Another Porsche (20+ year old 911)

Firstly this purchase isn’t in Australia, so if mods prefer to remove/delete this thread, I totally understand

Anyway we have a 981 Boxster in Sydney which my wife and I share (and love). The mid engine chassis is excellent and I love the flat 6.

However as some of you may know I am ever frustrated driving anything more powerful than a Morris Minor in Australia (was covered in another thread here) and I don’t always want to head hours out of Sydney just to drive normally and not be staring at the speedometer all the time

Since work takes me to Asia, I decided to look for another car, in Kuala Lumpur. I have been browsing the classifieds for ages and ended up sending this for a PPI yesterday, and ended up leaving a deposit (all sight unseen) as I am still in Sydney

PPI came back good apart from some acceptable (to me) wear and tear items in line with a 20+ year old 911. The porsche specialist told me he was very impressed by it, but I will have to set some $ aside for a major service (plugs, water pump, transmission and diff fluid etc). I also want to pin the coolant lines and brakes are still good for now but due in the near future.

It’s Also from a very reputable dealer who Im willing to give a go dealing with from afar. They don’t even advertise on the local equivalent of carsales as they seem to get enough clientele via their website alone.

It was the most expensive example advertised for sale at the time, but I believe in buying on condition rather than getting the cheapest out there if it’s indeed worth the higher asking price. It was Advertised for AU$89k, and yes I’m aware of Aus prices at the moment which seem mad. I wonder if they’ll come down and are overinflated, ie fishing exercises on carsales. Only time will tell

I would have absolutely loved a manual but after browsing the classifieds there, they are very rare and I’ve only ever seen one come up for sale in the last few years so I ended up with a tip.

Im buying with the intention of enjoying the car and not speculating too much about future values (I won’t be able to enjoy the car as much if I think too much about future values etc even tho they are always a consideration to some degree) and I genuinely like the 996 a lot, even tho it’s the most unloved and in some cases, hated 911 ever. They were the “new” 911 in my early 20’s and I wanted a 996 C4S back then but couldn’t afford one

Anyway fingers crossed all goes well. Here are some pictures . First of the Boxster

Then the 996 - the plates are blurred out because it’s just the way I received the pictures (mainly off the ad)

Thanks

Congratulations on the purchase! Looks like a great buy!

PS: I am a huge fan of the 996, and I am sure you will love the driving experience.

Thanks Andrew

I had a test drive of one a couple of years ago and I loved the way it felt. Something modern like a 718 is smooth fast etc, but the 996 gave me an “older car” feeling which I loved

It's funny you say that because I felt the same way when I bought my C4S.

I drove a 997 C4S as well and just didn't get that "old school" feel .. was a stunning and capable car, just wasn't what I was after coming from an air-cooled car.

Congrats and enjoy! ..

Umm I think the 996 turbo is a very well loved car!  Looks great.

interested to hear how the KL / outside KL driving experience is- good roads, traffic, enforcement ?

You may be able to import the 996 at some point if you spend enough time in it.. assuming you’d want to subject yourself to driving a turbo through the parade of speed cameras

Congrats lovely car. Looks like it is from JTcars. Kok Ho is lovely and has a great stable of cars, the premium was well paid.

Outside of KL lots of nice roads ;)

Enforcement is very much non existent compared to Australia …. You do get speeding fines but it’s not that easy to get fined …. When I’m driving there my eyes are always on the road ahead of me as I don’t have to stare at the speedometer all the time and 150-160 is considered more of a cruise there…. Suits a turbo well I think

Haha yes that’s exactly where I got it from and exactly who I dealt with …. They’re keeping the car for me until I return to KL to collect it

Had it been some other random dealer I’d never have trusted them to do so

Roads are brilliant and fairly new, especially between the main cities. We used to travel from Singapore into Malaysia a fair amount and  cops were rarely seen. If you had the balls to do so a S$50 would get you through any crisis 😋with your drivers license . Most SG supercar owners would venture into Malaysia to give their cars a blast and decent run.

I remember one trip Singapore to Malacca we averaged 180km/h makes for good timing on a 240 km trip.

@Jkay congrats on the car sounds like a bargain. Dont know what pricing ins Malaysia is like, if its taxed anything like Singapore then thats great buying. Looks very clean and in great condition.

Averaging 180 in Aus would see the Swat team deployed from behind every bush imaginable lol.

This was advertised at AU$89k thereabouts and I settled on low 80’s…. I’d rather drive this 3 months out of 12 there than drive it at 40/50/60kmh all year around in inner Sydney

thanks for your kind words and I hope it’ll be a pleasant ownership experience !

More like helicopter gunships opening fire on you. Especially in Victoria

You have to remember you’ll self destruct anyway once You exceed the posted limit(according to the govt ads), so they’re only doing what’s inevitably going to happen anyway

Jokes aside, I feel I’ll enjoy something like a turbo much more over there and have my mid engined 981 here in Aus which I can enjoy at lower speeds !
