Buying a new 996 Turbo - No original log book

Recommended Posts

This is my first post on the forums!  I've recently placed a deposit on my first Porsche.  Very excited, as I've always wanted one!  Looking for some opinions on a missing log book on it before I complete the purchase...

It's a 2001 996 Turbo that's done 111,000 Ks, and is going for $70,000.  From my research this seemed like quite a good price assuming the car is in good condition.

I've had a MTA inspection done, and everything is in "Good" condition. The only 2 points that stood out on the inspection report where "Sunroof requires service, returns when closing" (basically a bit harder to close it when you need to) and "Brake disc rotors have minor wear lips, but are still serviceable".

My concern is the shop I'm purchasing from originally said I could get the original log book but now they can't get in contact (apparently they travel a lot) with the previous owner of the car to get the log book from them. They've told me they can get a new one printed for me, including all the service history that was done by Porsche service centres (up to 2010 they are telling me).  They said they don't have any record after 2010, which is where I'm worried about now.

Looking for recommendations on the approach here?   I'm thinking getting an inspection done by a Porsche Service Centre may be in order, although not really sure...

Pre purchase inspection by a Porsche specialist is a must.

I would be more interested in the service history than the actual book. If you can get copies of all the service records, it is the same thing.

$70k seems very (possibly too) cheap. There is usually a reason for cheap cars...

Get it checked out thoroughly.

Hi Aaron,

and welcome to the forum.

I did see that car on carsales and I am pretty sure it was purchased by a PFA member 6 or so months ago.

What is a  MTA inspection, is it another word for PPI (Pre purchase inspection) and how thorough was it.

Have they downloaded the driving history from the ECU, as that can tell you if it has had significant over revs where a driver accidentally selects say 3rd instead of 5th gear at high revs which can eventually cause catastrophic engine damage.

Service history is a must.

That is a very hot price and as Teknostar said there is usually a reason for cheap cars.

Good luck with it.

MTA = Motor Traders Association?

if so I'd be getting a real Porsche workshop to look at it, I'm not sure if the MTA would know the in's and out's of such a car (aside from the obvious things)

Thanks all for the help. Jim, that's definitely the car here: ).%20It%20has%20the%20same%20Turbo%20S%20badge,%20seats,%20and%20yellow%20brake%20callipers.%20%C2%A0Great%20find,%20and%20good%20memory!%20%C2%A0I

I did notice during my research (using vedaauto.carhistory.com.au) that the car has only been driven 1000ks from 2010 until 2013, and that could explain why there is only official Porsche service history until 2010.  I suspect the car hasn't been serviced since then, based on the ks it's done.

With the Porsche workshop doing the PPI, who can you recommend in Sydney?  Also what costs would I be looking at? How long do they usual take?

While I'm on this topic, what are the usual price ranges for a minor and major service?

Are they PCCB or just the yellow caliper option? If theyre PCCB & there is worn rotors is not off to a good start.

Based on my limited knowledge of PCCB brakes - I don't think they are.  Based on visually looking at them, they appear to be normal steel brakes with yellow calipers. I'm assuming this as they look silver/reflective, as opposed to dull and grey.

Reposting my previous post:

The main difference since those photos is after market wheels (although apparently I can get the originals if I prefer those). It has the same Turbo S badge, seats, and yellow brake callipers. Great find, and good memory!  I've sent a message via these forums to redbaron.

Regarding MTA, they don't appear to have downloaded the ECU based on the report I have. These are the guys here: http://www.mtavehicleinspections.com.au/

I would use these guys. James from AH is on here (User name JustJames) I am sure he help you out. While I have not had a PPI done by them I can say the service from James has been spot on for parts and provides very nice beer at Le-manns partys.

+1 for AH. The team did a PPI for me. Very thorough and great service. Good luck Aaron with the purchase.

Don't discount a porsche centre either, about a day usually

just went through this exercise for 6 GT3 so I cannot imagine them being too much different, perhaps a bit more for the TT?

from Porsche; minor - $1k, major $2-2.5k ~

Substantially less when I called hamiltons for these two services, give them a call.

On a second glance I agree, looks like steel rotors.

Aaron,

An inspection by a P specialist is a must and ask for a over rev history download.

I have heard good reports about AH  from PFA members and I think you'll be in safe hands.

Traveling 1000 km in 3 years sounds a bit suss.

As with servicing, I have had pricing quotes from Jocaro in Melb who is an independent at $500 to $600 for minor.

They are an amazing car and the acceleration rush always puts a smile on my face.

Good luck with it.

Thanks all for your input, it seems AH is the way to go.  I'll be giving them a call tomorrow to arrange a PPI.

Servicing seems to be less than I expected, which is great!

Definitely looking forward to owning my first Porsche.

I'm no expert, but I am in the car industry...

- get a replacement book if you can and have it re-stamped according to it's history.

- try to get them to replicate the first owner details too (they may cite privacy act but push them!)

- get reprints of all invoices to verify the servicing history (book has stamps, invoices have details)

- try to get the stock wheels (very important for resale)

- PPSR doesn't really give much useful info. And it can be wrong. Check for no write off history and check the insurance claim history. It is supposed to show up big claims but I have come across cars which have had claims, but doesn't show on the PPSR.

- proper PPSR is a must. the MTA check is a bit like an RACQ... good for the average car and average person, but not a car like this.

Is it too cheap? maybe. But if all checks out and hasn't had major repairs, then you are getting a BARGAIN. And we will all be very envious.

If you don't go through with the sale, what happens to your deposit?

Just completed the purchase of this car today, very happy with the new purchase.

Got a PPI done by the guys over at Autohaus Hamilton, Grant and the rest of the team did a great job.  Everything came up fine, there were a few minor things that needed fixing - but nothing major that stood out.

That being said I got an error when I was driving the car today, a PSM and ABS off light - and telling me to get serviced.  Based on my little bit of research, it appears a sensor somewhere is probably playing up.  I've tried a few things so far such as getting the wheels cleaned, and checking the tyre pressure but no luck yet.  I'll probably be taking it in to AH to get them to take a look on Monday.
