FlatSix Posted 27June, 2013 Report Share Posted 27June, 2013 The Australian Formula 1 pilot Mark Webber has signed a contract with Porsche that extends over several years. From the 2014 season he will compete in Porsche’s new LMP1 sports prototype at the Le Mans 24 Hours and in the sports car World Endurance Championship WEC. The 36-year-old Australian has already raced at Le Mans twice. In 1998 he finished runner-up in the FIA GT Championship at the wheel of a sports prototype. Over the course of his Formula 1 career from 2002 until today, Webber has achieved 36 podium places, nine race victories and has started from pole position eleven times. “It’s an honour for me to join Porsche at its return to the top category in Le Mans and in the sports car World Endurance Championship and be part of the team. Porsche has written racing history as a manufacturer and stands for outstanding technology and performance at the highest level,” says Mark Webber. “I’m very much looking forward to this new challenge after my time in Formula 1. Porsche will undoubtedly set itself very high goals. I can hardly wait to pilot one of the fastest sports cars in the world.” “I’m very pleased to have secured Mark Webber for our LMP1 project as one of the best and most successful Formula 1 pilots of our time,” says Wolfgang Hatz, Board Member for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “Mark is without doubt one of the world’s best race drivers, he has experience at the Le Mans 24 hour race and on top of that he’s been a Porsche enthusiast for many years.” “I learned to appreciate Mark’s qualities when we were both involved in Formula 1,” says Fritz Enzinger, Head of LMP1. “He is one of the best pilots I could imagine for our team. I’m absolutely delighted that we have such an experienced and fast regular driver onboard from 2014.” - See more at: http://www.ferdinandmagazine.com/porsche-confirms-mark-webber-for-lmp1-le-mans-2014#sthash.ZpxXzEoM.dpuf Well the rumor is now confirmed, Good to see him making the move. http://www.ferdinandmagazine.com/porsche-confirms-mark-webber-for-lmp1-le-mans-2014

tazzieman Posted 27June, 2013 Report Share Posted 27June, 2013 Did anyone note that Wolfgang and Mark said that he would be a "pilot" in the new Porsche. Well it does look like a plane with no wings! And racecars have cockpits...

Airhead Posted 27June, 2013 Report Share Posted 27June, 2013 Pilot is the German word for driver. It's all that low flying they do on the autobahns
tazzieman Posted 27June, 2013 Report Share Posted 27June, 2013 Pilot is the German word for driver. It's all that low flying they do on the autobahns It would do wonders for the road toll if people regarded themselves as pilots and not just "motorists" i.e. with a "licence" to play with mp3 players , phones and other car gizmos whilst chowing down fatburgers and coke! But it won't happen (politicians are motorists) and instead we'll be hit with the bandaid of increasingly reduced speed limits. Go go Captain Webber! There's certainly a spot in the chauffered world of Aussie politics when you're done with racing
Coastr Posted 28June, 2013 Report Share Posted 28June, 2013 The Merc isn't the only car that Mark has taken to the skies. Great news I think, and great to leave F1 on a high and not hang around at the back in a crap team until they run out of money. I think the renewed challenge and VW money will see him atop a podium pretty quickly.

Coastr Posted 28June, 2013 Report Share Posted 28June, 2013 Hang on there.....doesn't Mark have problems with Germans? Or is it just one in particular? It's actually Helmut Marko the Austrian that does him over. He can beat Vettel when he is allowed to.

cyberpunky Posted 28June, 2013 Report Share Posted 28June, 2013 The owner of red bull has already said Mark will stay in the family and have at least a red bull helmut next year *Mateschitz said Webber would continue to be backed by Red Bull, including wearing its logos on his helmet into next year.*
Coastr Posted 28June, 2013 Report Share Posted 28June, 2013 Mateschitz was never the problem, I would guess he is the reason Mark was at RB for so long. RB people seem to be rewarded for loyalty. Good chance for RB sponsors on the car.
cyberpunky Posted 28June, 2013 Report Share Posted 28June, 2013 Was thinking the same re sponsorship of car. I'd like that as I can keep all my RB F1 merch and still be supporting Webber
