Air Conditioning

okay, so everyone says don't air condition a 911 'cause it'll never work (unless it's a 964 or onwards)

but coming into summer, a light breeze of cool air is better than hot air when sitting in traffic

I know of someone who spent a lot of money and got "good but not great" air conditioning (which I figure is better than nothing) - but I've also spoken to heaps of specialists in air conditioning and Porsches who say not to bother

my thoughts are so far:

  • After seeing the standard compressor I figure I'm going to go to something rotary and light
  • Going to lines that aren't as porous as the current lines (apparently they weep during use)
  • it's then the size of the evaporator and condenser that are issues, but I think i'm stuck with those sizes based on where they are

oh and it turns out I have the same ideas as this guy has put into practice - http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/ac/ice/

anyone got any more ideas?

Hey Russ,

I was sent this link from Simon from Autowerks a few months ago when I spoke with him about options for my car. He said has fitted a few over the years and they work very well. http://retroair.com/porscheairconditioning/911upgradekits.html

I have also spoken to the guys at Autohaus who told me of the great suscess they have had over recent years upgrading existing and also new installs for non factory AC cars like mine. Not sure if they sell a kit you can install yourself or not but might be worth a call.

Keep us posted as I would like to AC mine otherwise I wont use it on hot days.

Cheers

Ben

Looks like a few people are having the same idea, a few hot days makes these cars a bit unbearable.

I have a guy coming out on thursday to look at my compressor, I know its been rebuilt in the past and I think a new one will be the go this time.

How is the aircon in a 944?

Anyone upgraded their system lately, any info will be helpful.

roof off, windows open.. seriously i think aircon is useless. I have one in my 944 turbo, I spent a lot of effort in connecting it to work with the R134a but i still haven't gassed it and it has not bothered me at all.

Well the A/C in my 964 just coughs out mildly cool air (barely). At first I was considering just ripping it out but after being stuck in slow traffic for an hour on a hot day I changed my mind rather quickly. It's not a problem when your moving, it's the traffic that gets you. Now I just have to muster up the $800 for a new fan (Really?) and get it re-gassed.

Got the AC fixed when I got my 944T and it rocks. The 944's are such a glass house you need it IMO but I am one of the very few who has no sunroof, so maybe be it is more of an issue for my car. It is nice though as had no AC in prior vehicle for the 17 years before that lol

I had a look at the Autohaus retrofit kit and it looked rather good.  While they gave me a price, I'll let JustJames poke his head in here rather than me speak on their behalf though.

Thanks 'Wolf

Currently the kit is in the region of $3k for a car with factory air and around $4k for a car with no air.

Those are prices for the kit.  It's a labour intensive installation, so factor on another $3k or thereabouts for fitting.

Yes, it is expensive but it works, and works well.

The aircon guy has just left, coming back Monday to pull out out compressor, send to Melbourne and rebuild the guts.

He says the nippondenso unit in the 944 is totally rebuildable and a very good unit so there should not be any reason that it won't be cold with a new drier as well, apparently this is the thing that helps the air con really work.

He says the units in the older 911's were not so good but still effective enough to keep you cool.

Sitting at the lights and in traffic no auto air is that good you still need the ram air to keep the system cool.

He cleared something up as well about the old porous hoses that were used with the older "nasty" gas. The compressor has some oil in it and the older mineral oil that was used coats the inside of the hoses and makes a type of lining, so their is really no need to replace these old hoses unless they are leaking.

He also tells me that even 60 seconds of running the A/C a day is enough to lube everything and keep it all good.

Topped up the outback with gas as well while he was here, it was about 20% down, it went from about 9 deg down to about 5.5 deg and while it doesn't sound like much, I can really feel the difference in cooling.

Russ, I got the a/c in mine re-gassed to see what condition it was in and to see if they were a poor as reported. Quite surprised really, while nothing like a moden car of course but I'm sure in 1978 it would have been luxury :) true in traffic it's performance drops off but that is not helped by my front condensor fan being shot.

My system is standard with the huge York compressor and original hoses, the PO told me he used to get it re gassed after 12 to 18 months or when the performance dropped off. He also told me the car was perfect:) I find it adiqaute for my use and I will replace the front condensor fan and will look into getting some fans for the rear condensor.

The previously mentioned $4k parts plus $3k Lab is way out of my budget, I'm sure if you did your research you could get something more economical that will do what you need.

You can have a look next time we catch up.

Cheers

Can you chuck me a P.M with this number when you get a chance mate? I need to get my Patrol re-gassed as it a little low.

Cheers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Air con fixed and cold but alas my fan controller may be on the blink.

It has been working intermittently like if I go over a bump or fiddle with the controller but I drove it today and it flicked on once.

The air con mechanic thinks it may be the brushes in the motor but I don't think so because it works on high if you hit the windscreen defrost button.

Not sure but I think I can find out Mark, I will send you a pm when I know, went for a proper test run today it is very hot and humid up here and aircon works fantastic, hopefully it will last a long time now as I drive it at least once a week.

so I've started buying bits for this, I'm going to replace the hoses/receiver drier/buy a 'newer' and lighter/better rotary compressor and do this with the condenser (but put a medium sized grille over it to protect against stones)

I think then it's going to be all the stuff up front that lets the team down, and I think that's the Achilles heal of the 911 air con

Russ,

Are you going for a Kuehl, Retroair or Rennaire setup or are you going to cherry pick bits and pieces from each supplier as they each seem to have their good and bad points?

I'm keen to hear how you go, so please keep posting!

Regards

Peter
