Just off the phone with the paint shop manager. Very apologetic for the paint and as a make good they're respraying the whole car. These guys charge an eye-watering $20,000 - $25,000 for a full respray so I'll take that...

Score.  To be honest when you said you were patching it in this was what I was worried about - metallic silver is very tough to get blended well, and you had patches on every panel.  It could easily have ended up looking like a dalmatian.

Because it's not going to be a glass-out repaint I'd be checking their masking job - you don't want paint on rubbers handles etc etc.  I'm sure they are professional but now it's a money losing job for them so just be on the ball for corner-cuts.  By the way they've already treated you i'd say you'll be in the clear...but still.

Don't know what sort of a body shop it is but sometimes the guys that work there don't mind spending the extra time on an interesting car.  It must get boring retouching the 25th camry with a carpark scrape for the week.

Just back from looking at the progress. The quality of the work is fantastic. Gun-finish is like nothing I've ever seen. Can't wait to see it clearcoated and wet sanded.

I'll put up some snaps of the car and the workshop once I get them off the camera.

So, headed out to check on progress this afternoon with the missus and a mate. Ended up on an hour long tour of the premises and took a few snaps along the way.

The garage mostly specialise in classic British sports cars, namely MG and Austin-Healey, but will work on anything. When Austin-Healeys were first produced on an assembly line there was a tolerance of up to an inch when putting the cars together. When these guys reassemble them they aim for 1mm.  No wonder that cars are shipped to them from all over the world.

It was great seeing the cars at different stages of build.

This sums up how they run the shop.

This was a stand out for me, a Facel Vega HK500. Never heard of one before. French cars with 6.3 litre Chrysler V8s. Parts are non-existent so they made most of the trim from scratch.

My bumpers and some trim.

Next up was the fabrication/body shop.

Very early stages of a fibreglass Ferrari 308.

Then we got to the booth, where my car was after paint yesterday. The finish is brilliant, and that's before wet sanding. I'm delighted. The light wasn't great so only got shots of the rear.

And last but not least, the obligatory barn find. Parked up since 1988 according to the rego and literally found in a barn two weeks ago.

Great afternoon and happy to wait for weeks knowing the attention to detail going into the Targa.

Seeing a real working shop like that really shows up the guys on Discovery Turbo like Gas Monkey - widows being ripped off and projects being rushed for a greater profit.

I've been in the Healey Factory a few times (after parts for our Spitfire) and yes, the quality of the restored cars there is second to none, having said that so is the price but you get what you pay for. A mate in Gloucester sent me some photos last week of a group of Healey's he saw in the Cotswolds, all on VIC plates doing a tour. 2 had Healey Factory logos on them.

Finish on yours looks great, that's some attention to detail they have. My silver one needs the bonnet and front bumper painting, not looking forward to a bodyshop trying to match it but I'm hoping the fact it's been indoors for the last 23-24 years will have helped.

Thats a good shop, yet $20k for a RESPRAY? Thats a sand down, fix some little dents and lay some paint on yeah?

Excuse me whilst I try to find an emoticon which represents hysterical laughter! WOW!

big diff between bare metal and mask up and blow over existing paint as shown here.

but gee, doesn't that new paint look nice.  Who doesn't want to book their car in after seeing that?

Few more bits landed yesterday.

The knob is a bit more matte than I thought it would be but will wear nicely. Wasn't expecting the plates for a few more weeks but the lads at the Hopkins Correctional Centre did a great job.

Who/Where did you get the gear knob from?

it states in his original post '$20k for a respray', there was no mention of a bare metal job for that price, hence why I said it was ludicrous

There are lots of good resto shops out there and THF is one of them. But they don't do Camrys.

The templates for my mats arrived today. They haven't done them for a RHD '74 before so hopefully they got it right. Otherwise I'll have to adjust and post them back which will add weeks to the lead time.

They also sent a sample of the material. Jesus it's thick!

And a side profile, with a biro for scale.

Car is booked in for roadworthy and registration tomorrow so should be good for collection from Friday.

So, today was P-Day.

Picked the car up at 8:00 and got it out on the motorway almost straight away. The noise, the smell and the feel of the car have me smitten.

After the trip home.

Got used to it a lot quicker than I thought I would, so filled the tank and spent the day driving. Forehead is nicely sun-kissed now but more than worth it! It's a dream to drive, pulls like a train and didn't skip a beat, even in heavy traffic and direct sunlight. My missus is a big fan of it too, especially in the lower gears with the revs around 4,000.

Took a few shots before I parked up for the night.
