Following Steve88's advice all the major touch points in the car need to be top notch.  So I bought a crappy steering wheel and am going to do it up so it's fantastic.  As stated before I'm a big fan of the 380mm diameter wheel and this wheel is classic 70s Porsche, and often used in their race cars.  Current grip circumference is 90mm and needs to be 100mm to be a 'fatty'.  This was often achieved by double covering the wheel so perhaps with this wheel the current cover can be re-stitched and then a second cover stitched over it.  I took it apart and cleaned it today and this is where I'm at:

  1. I need a recommendation for a great trimmer to recover the wheel.  Must be a first rate job.  Melbourne based
  2. The rear shroud is very brittle and weak and I need someone to suggest how it can be strengthened.  Fibreglassing?
  3. I need to dye the rear shroud so what is the best plastic dye to use
  4. Ditto the horn pad which is more like a rubber than a plastic.  Hopefully the same gear does the job
  5. Horn pad clips are stuffed per the images so I intend to either get new ones (boring) or recreated them in aluminium or acetal so they never crack or fail
  6. I need a horn ring so if anyone has one in their garage to sell me please let me know.

If this were my car, I'd probably do a Vaillant Kremer tribute:

Great car though faaaaaaaaar too noisy and unrefined for what I've got in mind.  Colour is not far off the Jade used in the IROC car and overall they're pretty similar when you consider mine will end up being a road version of them.  So it's a case of eether ither to me, or in other words great choice!

A vaping hipster with a 911 RSR replica. NOOOOOOO!

Nice car though

lol Bondi Hipsters in Britain.  How annoying is that long haired guy! Talk about an affectation!

Lee, I think we should get together with a GoPro and drive around and see who can be the biggest arse then post it on the internet.  Would make better viewing than these 2 muppets.  Obviously not very familiar with a 915...

The car is well put together but I do not dig the colour, the din, the door mirrors and the wheels that are too large in diameter.  Why anyone uses > than 15" on these things I'll never know.

As always there were some good details which I've picked up on a scribbled down on my build sheet so thanks for posting Tit.

BTW my 6yo daughter asked why you are called Tit and isn't that rude and what's going on with your avatar so thanks for that!

Only slightly less embarrassing than having your boss looking at something on your pc screen as the email notification "Tit has sent you a message" pops up in the bottom right corner....took some explaining

Need a tip for repairing this brittle and weak part.  Is this stuff any good or as god as you might fear given it says 'as seen on TV'.  I.m thinking I drip it in from the outside, so the mess goes to the inside, then cured it with that UV light.  Do small sections at a time and work around the circumference until each of the layers is complete.  My fear is the section where there is no material let and the liquid being too thin to stay in place before being cured.

Or do I use firbreglass mats and some Loctite 2 part epoxy in lieu of a bucket of fibreglassing goo.

@MFX where are you?  How do I do the whole '@'thing so it tells Jeff I need him?

Re: horn button

935's and other period racers of the day used stock wheels with the horn pad removed and a little rectangular steel plate fitted instead, with a round horn button (like an 80's arcade game button). Very cool looking, not often replicated and period correct.

Here you go

Another alternative. The button set up is readily available from most motorsport shops. I got this one from Autosport here in SA. $59 or $69 I think. Comes with 2 buttons, wiring, circular mounting ring (PCD 7Pmm for Momo etc). Works great, as you just use ya thumbs.  I have a deep dish wheel now, so it's a bit of a stretch. Will probably do as Ryan mentioned, and make a longer alloy bracket

Great detail, but a little too industrial for what the build will be.

My 'new' wheel above is locked in for '74 onwards, or the other 380mm Porsche wheel will be for '73 or if I just fancy it.

What am I looking at there? That 5 second fix stuff looks amazing, I just wonder if it lives up to it's claims. It must be worth a try though. I have never really had much luck personally, when it comes to repairing plastic. The only other suggestion I could have would be to use a plastic welder, but that requires you to find out what type of plastic it is and getting rods of the same, or stealing some off of the part in a discrete place.

Sorry I couldn't swoop in and save the day :) . I would say that if you tried to fibreglass it, it will eventually come apart.
