997 or 997S

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and am enjoying reading all the posts. I have been a 911 fan for as long as I can remember and the time has come for me to start looking to buy one. I am after a car I can keep for some time and will not be a daily driver.

I have decided on a 997 Manual and I have looked at a couple. The 997S is great but they are a lot more expensive in Manual than auto.

Just wondering if people think you could pick up a manual 997S for the same price as some of the autos or if I can always expect to pay a premium.

As a side note, would you expect the 997 to keep decreasing in value over the next few years to match the 996 prices.

Thanks in advance

My 10 cents...

Quite a few variables make up price.  And it's similar to all Porsche models

997.1 vs 997.2 - 997.2 got engine changes, new PDK and a new interior centre console, but if you want to see ALL the changes see attached (an interesting read)

Manual vs Auto - manual nearly always more, but PDK is pretty impressive

Coupe vs Convertible - coupe nearly always more

From my research; a 997.2 manual will be desirable as they didn't sell many during the GFC, the engine issues were fixed and lots of small upgrades (attached) which made it a better car.  I'd suggest these 997.2 manuals will be slow to drop in price.

Regarding the S or not S.  997.2 non S ends up with similar power to the 997.1 S ; so more to think about.

I doubt the 997 will ever go to 996 prices.

I have a 997.1 S in manual ,,,when I was buying my car I found that manuals demanded a  higher price than the Autos ,,I also discovered that certain options such as sports chrono ,and 19 inch rims also raised the price and generally there is also a premium to be paid on low mileage cars ....

I'm glad this thread popped up. I have been wondering what all the hoohar is about the '.2'.

The 997 is the only other 911 I would be tempted to get if I sold the SC. I imagine I couldn't afford a .2 though.

Now to examine all the 0-100 times in each variation.

Why is everyone so hung up on these numbers, i'm more interested in which one i can pummel through a 35km hr corner at a 100km hr;)

Fascinating, 997.2 3.8 has similar power to a 996 GT3.  And I assume the 997 is quicker off the mark.  They have very different purposes of course but maybe 7 years newer with similar HP/performance for less coin seems good value.  Not suggesting you'd cross shop the 2 but it just shows the rate of progress.

Great read, can you tell me if that is an extraction from a larger doc/book .. eg. is there a similar doc for other models.

I just found it in my travels of the Internet.  I'd say Porsche did others but not sure where to find them

2002 996.2 3.6L Manual = 4.9 - 5.0 depending on what you read.

I doubt the 997 will ever go to 996 prices.

The bottom end of the 997 market is already meeting/overlapping the top end of the 996 market in like for like C2 manual coupes.

Yes I think the times for the 996.2 and the 997.1 in Manual are the same.

So based on the prices do you think the 997 prices are falling?

My preference is still with the 997. More modern features and I prefer the headlights.

  • 3 months later...

Im just about to buy a 997.1 auto...and , its an import...

several reasons.... price, options, log books and my hoon girlfriend can't drive a manual.

I'm not at all worried about re sale value, australian delivered or any of that stuff. (they are all made in the same factory....), were not buying for an investment or show pony ,  we are buying to drive  through snowy mtns , putty road and weekend road trips.

i don't care it only reaches 0-100 in 5.5 seconds instead of 4.9, but it will do whole putty road in 50 mins.... :)

we are buying because its the best bang for buck , and it is just damm nice to drive!!!

(and its the only one I've found with sunroof delete..)

good luck and enjoy
