Whats is the general consensus on what tyres to run on a GT3 for road use ?  Michelin , Pirelli ??

Whos your fave tyre suppliers in Melbourne? Good prices and carefull with those sparkly wheels?

Steve, the michelins seem to get good raps. Having had them on my car now for the last year I am really happy with how they perform and seem to be wearing quite well.

this might sound a bit weird but if you are a Costco member get a price from them as I believe they are michelins biggest customer.

The cup 2 is a great tyre, especially for up there in Byron where it doesn't get cold. The pilot supersport is the next step down which is more street orientated but still really good. It has been replaced by the the pilot sport 4 which is better again and encroaching on Cup 2 territory supposedly without the usual drawbacks of an aggressive tyre.

I believe the PS4 is a replacement for the PS3. Neither of these replace the PS2. You just need to check the available sizes and price as they are not made in the wide or big diameters. Suitable tyres are the PSC2 then PSS and the old PS2. The PSC2 and PSS can handle the track. The PS2 will suffer badly. I have used all on various cars except the PS4.

PSC2 if mainly dry driving and track. PSS best all rounder. I found the PSC2 to grip ok in the wet but I have had it aquaplane in conditions where the PSS would not have. (I have never had a PSS aquaplane).

Just some thoughts.  Wear isn't an issue as a) you can afford it and b ) you don't drive it much and they'll go off before they wear out.  I don't believe they need to be the last word in grip as let's face it the GT3 has high limits at the best of times, and a little slip every now and again is no bad thing.  Consider wet performance as you're much more likely to see the edge of the performance envelope of a road tyre in the wet.  Consider looks - always important.  Consider road noise - I don't mind a loud car but please not tyre roar as that's just noise.

I run Pirelli P Zero Rosso in factory sizes and have always found them to be good, and especially in the wet.  Never ran the Michelins so can't compare.

Car currently has Pirelli Troffero R  - I think they are called that.   I was concerned if our PFA track day is wet as these are reported as a NO NO on wet track, I will waste the day and also as I want to drive on the road  and will drive it home to Melbourne thought I might swap em out

I tried to get Pss but they have been unavailable for some time now, the replacement is PS4s which is not yet available, the word is April in Europe and mid year US, but nothing definite for OZ.

The PS4 is the replacement for the PSS which was the replacement for the PS2. PS3 is a different category of tyre.

Either way, it will be very difficult to get PS4 in AUS for a while. PSS is a fantastic tyre agree, I have them on my daily A44 AMG and they are miles better than the Dunlop SportMaxx that were on there before. Nice stiff sidewalls and good steering feedback.

Looks like Steve is right (and I will be chatting to my Michelin tyre guy on Monday).

Doing some research this is my understanding now.

http://www.michelin.co.uk/GB/en/tyres/all.html#!filter/family:Pilot

"PS4" range is currently being expanded to larger sizes and is suitable to replace the PS2 and PS3 over a wide size range.

"PS4S" is being introduced to replace the PSS and looks like it is available in 19" and bigger sizes only and has a similar tread design. They could have called it a PSS2 but I guess marketing want to keep a consistent family name and entice those buying a $200 tyre into one as that is used by supercars.

Looking at the tread patterns the "PS4" is much closer to a PS3 and the "PS4S" is very close to the PSS with the PS2 in-between or closer to the PS3. The PS3 was great on my V6 Passat but I would never have put it on my Porsches. Calling it a PS seems to have been a marketing exercise so not sure the PS4 is a direct replacement.

I have always found Michelin supply to be erratic with long periods of no supply in Aus. Some specialist dealers do hold limited stock but at a price and I have had issues getting what I need even from them. These days I buy 6 months in advance so I have what I need when I need it. So far I have had no issues getting PSS in my sizes but PS2 supply has dried up.

I expect there is more to it and we are getting a new range to choose from that can replace rather than be direct replacements so I guess we will find out their plans for AUS in due course.

Cheapest in Melb Cup2's Hawthorn tyrepower… next up Jax Hawthorn.. yes in short supply  -- hawthorn seems to have the pick of the good tyre shops

The proferro on the car are barely worn if anyone is looking fo a good dry tyre .. open to leaving em in melbourne for a reasonable dollar , changing em over tmrw.. shit they are expensive ;)  Let me get em off I will picture them for anyone in the market .. or will corrier them home to the Byron hills

For me couldnt take the chance not having a car to drive on Sunday if it rained.. with my Bro flying in from Oseas.. to join in the fun

Thanks for all your inputs folks

Just FYI - for road use P-Zeros are waaaaayyyy quieter. I've just gone from P-Zeros to PSS to try them out, wow are they loud in comparison.

PSS are a little noisy (more if you take them to the track) but they last significantly longer than P-Zeros from what i've been told.

For the Tour wet performance should be the priority as you wiil be driving a day (or more) in wet and damp/changing conditions. You will not be pushing hard enough to justify R's or to cause issues for a normal performance road tyre.
