The search is on for a 1976 Porsche

Recommended Posts

If you have 45K to spend, get a nice mid 80s 3.2 Carrera.

That is the best Porsche 911 you will get for that money.

But if you want a 76, thats great.

Good luck, hope you find what you want.  :)

When you find a nice mid 80s 3.2 for $45k kindly let me know.  These days it seems as though the asking price of said vehicles has jumped to $55k

At 45k you would think a nice 3.2 would be in the mix.

I get what you are saying but there is something that appeals about investing in a car the same model as I am.

What say those more experienced than I about this 76 911 Carrera?

I know it's not a concourse car but she does look good (needs a re-trim to black).

It's quite heavily modified - this can be a good or bad thing based on personal taste and your intentions with the car. This car will not hold its value like that of a more 'original' type.

Like anything, mods come down to personal taste and when you make them you risk reducing the value - such can be said for almost all of the impact bumper cars that had 'updated' bodies put on them.

Backdating is the new updating now!

Thanks guys, that's the type of feedback I was looking for.

I did call them thinking my chances on finding a 76 911 C3 is going to be slim. Apparently the car has the last 10years worth of receipts, engine rebuild and respray about 8 years go. Approx 110k spent in the purchase and mods they tell me but as you say still something pretending to be what it's not.

The search continues.

Shame, 110k. It's been sitting there for a while and I suspect it will sell for much less (if it sells). Still alot of car though, delete the tail, alt set of wheels and could be a bit of a rod. You'd want a deal though.

One 1976 C3. But you're going to have to like white. A mate of mine checked it out but got cold feet on selling his 356 to buy it. Said it was a very very nice car though in every way.

It is a great looking C3 but really not a fan of white but its growing on me...... Dare I say it looks way to much like the white MGC I restored with the old man many years ago, which he still has.

Saw that one Trev, there are two for sale within about 40min of me that I might have a look at. At the very least I will have seen one up close and who knows might even get to drive one.

Entertaining this idea at the moment. From what I have found online I will need about 55k for one it great condition.

Would a mid 80's 3.2 be much better than say this shinning example below which I can't stop looking at? Even though it's not the colour I want.

I'm going to try and get down to Sydney on Saturday and have a look at the 84 911 C3.2 at Autohaus.http://www.inventorysearch.com.au/gallery.php/ahhamilton_all_stock/1984_Porsche_911_Carrera_Chiffon_White_5_Speed_Manual_Coupe/6372267/photo_1/?referer=Detail%20Page

Only you can answer that one...drive em both aNd then post your answer.

It's almost a disgrace that white or ice green targa c3 have sat for so long on the market...IMO the white is a killer.

people will debate this until the end of time - the 3.2 has more power and torque and is bit more comfortable, but the gearing is slightly longer and lazier so to many it feels less lively with the torquey engine, whereas the 3.0L is a slightly lighter car with a more rev happy engine.

imo it's six of one half a dozen of the other, because you can throw some money at either one to get it where you want it

Popped my Porsche cheery yesterday, eventually.

Headed off to Sydney early yesterday morning to be at the Classic Throttle Shop at opening time (0900 on their website 0830 on the signage at the shop) to have a look at this http://www.classicthrottleshop.com/modernclassic8.html After standing around until 1000 and still no one had shown up to open up we had to move on as we had a few other things to do before getting home by a specific time. Unfortunately Autohaus isn't open weekends according to their website, glad I check before driving that extra way, so I was unable to have a closer look at http://www.inventorysearch.com.au/gallery.php/ahhamilton_all_stock/1984_Porsche_911_Carrera_Chiffon_White_5_Speed_Manual_Coupe/6372267/photo_1/?referer=Detail%20Page

Anyway, arriving home disappointed not being able to at least sit in a Porsche for the first time I call the owner of this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330885431977?nma=true&si=NJZqNnmyl0pnVEBclRfSc4zCgqM%3D&rt=nc&_trksid=p4340.l2557&orig_cvip=true and after a quick chat was on my way to have a closer look. Beautiful car, well cared for, looks perfectly straight (viewed in poor light tho), 76 model and from the looks of all the paperwork the owner has a full service history. Ticking almost all the boxes we took it for a test drive but after sleeping on it a Sportomatic is not for me.

So, having now sat in and driven one, knowing I fit comfortably and having had a close up look at a white Porsche and really liking it I am seriously considering flying to QLD to have a look at this one that has been refereed to several times in this thread already. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-911-carrera-1976-13617931?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=1&eapi=2&__N=900%201466%201246%201252%201247%201282%204294963765%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&sort=~Year

A couple of questions,

Is the peddle position something you get use too and find comfortable eventually?

Does it phase you getting out of your Porsche and into another car and driving off? I got out of the sportomatic and into the Hilux last night and it felt strange for the first minute or so and was wondering how it would feel after driving the Porsche for a few days to jump into something with normal peddle position.

When did center consoles come in in Porsche's as I find on a long drive without one my shoulder which I broke my collar bone a few years ago aches without out that support. Mind you I drive with my hand resting on the gear knob in most manuals, something you can't do in a sportomatic.

Does this car have AC? http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/porsche-911-carrera-1976-13617931?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=1&eapi=2&__N=900%201466%201246%201252%201247%201282%204294963765%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&sort=~Year Not having seen a 3.0 engine in the flesh but the compressor etc is not where it was in the 2.7lt I looked at last night.

Cheers,

Ben

Hi, Ben.

Good for you drive as many as you can.

It will always feel a bit odd.

I have a Suby that's an auto.

After driving my turbo for a day last year, I jumped back in the Suby and took off down the road.

After about 30 meters I went to change gears, foot down on brake as I would a clutch.

Lucky I had the seat belt on.

Oh, and forget AC.

Anything pre 89 the AC is not very good.

Most of us with the older cars never bother turning it on.
