Car Covers

Recommended Posts

 Ladies and gents

I need to buy a decent car cover for the SC, as the 912 is still in the shed until I manage to fit some new parts for the new owner.

The SC will mostly be in the carport, though the front sticks out a bit, yet I still want to fit a cover to keep it away from prying eyes when the roller door is up, and keep the front of the car dry

Any recommendations without laying out mega bucks? I only probably need it for a couple of weeks

Lee, if you want my advice, if its just weeks, even a month or so, an external  cover can do more dammage than good. They move around in the wind and rub and they also let moisture sit between the car and the cover. You will read a million adverts about specialist lining, breathable membranes etc. but my advice is unless the car leaks like a shower head, park it and then just give it a good wash and dry when you finally put it away. Ask me how I know - I bought a high quality external cover for a non-Pcar and havent been impressed (I moved the car into a rented garage)

Another alternative - look at short term undercover storage

Thanks Dave. Will definitely consider that. I do want the car home to clean it up and work on it though. Its more for prying eyes over the fence etc

I had thought of that Tomo (I had the same at my old unit), and I kinda have the space for it, so thats winning at the moment. A better option than the cover as Dave says. Cheers lads

Sorry to hijack the thread Lee, but does anyone know if they make a good cover for indoors? My 928 has a nice dusting over it although it is parked nicely inside my garage....

The buyer of my 912 supplied a very nice indoor cover called 'Crafted to Fit'. Shame it doesnt fit the car though! No idea on pricing

I was told a trick by someone for outdoor covers.

Buy a good quality fitted indoor cover and then an outdoor car cover from Supercheap (one for a small hatch fits over my 996) then after washing and drying put the fitted car cover over the car and then put the outdoor cover over the top.

Any rubbing should be reduced as the outdoor cover is rubbing against the cloth cover which is fitted on the car so your paint should be fine.

Here is my new cover, purchased it from Supercheap of all places for $89. Perfect fit for the 964, looks like it's made out of tracksuit type material, nice and fleecy on the inside. Then a $10 plastic cover that panel shops use so it's dust proof.

Adam,

I took Fraz's advice and have been happy with the Coverall brand.  If you are happy to wait, Supercheap should be due for another 20% off sale soon.

@Peter M I am still happy with that supercheap cover too, I now use the plastic drop sheets (they come in a roll from Bunnings) on top to keep the soft cover clean and reduce that annoying fine dust. The plastic sits perfectly just over the edges of the car allowing for a bit of air flow.

I had the soft frame car bubble.  Useless.

I'm sure the drive in carcoons are ok, but mine had to be laid of the car then inflated. Put plastic marks on the car.  Stupid. Sold it a few days later.

Carcoons are good idea if the plastic stays off the car.

Also. They are big. A single carcoon took up 1.5 spaces.

I bought these for $104 off fleabay from a company out in Tullamarine.

i like the idea of using the drop sheet over the top.

I bought one of these for my last car. For just over $100 they are great. Very soft and light. Comes in 3 sizes. Great for an indoor dust cover. Not for outdoors.

I got one of the above last weekend for the Barry Manilow Wagon..

Medium is pretty huge, but they feel nice and soft - I'm happy with it.

Yep!  I cut the straps off mine so the plastic clips don't have a chance to contact the paintwork.  Don't need the straps anyway.

Did the same myself, but have since developed a fold-up/unfold procedure to remove/place the cover carefully.  They have an unexpected amount of weight.
