Mid 80s BMW 635CSi......

Exactly.  A great idea.  You can become David (Bruce Willis, https://youtu.be/ZjOr-UEQcaI?t=12) or Maddie (Cybil Shepherd) - (whichever floats your boat) from the TV show Moonlighting.  You could even be Hawk (Avery Brooks, https://youtu.be/DO8fl6dZuqI?t=214)  from the TV show Spenser for Hire

You could always go down a similar route to Number27 on YouTube. He went with the idea of getting a new car every 2 months for 2 years to get a range of experiences.

4 guys in the latest Popular Classics mag each bought a car for 750 pounds and drove them to Switzerland ; all had a right royal time even with breakdowns , but isn't adventure , travel & good company what we all crave? Or is it the pure soft sybaritic package experience? Anyway , they got a Euro holiday on the cheap and got to sell the cars on return...I'm sure they will repeat the whole exercise.

I have actually thought seriously about doing that on a trip to the US. It is just the logistics that has me hesitating. Finding the right car and then selling it when it is done. You really need someone on the ground to help out.

I thought you just need an app, Craigslist and a few 100 quid!

To buy it would be easy, I am more thinking about selling it when I am done. Also there is the pesky issue of insurance...?

@GUT... I sense there's a bit of "Alfa" love going on here against the better judgement of a few p-car aficionados, i.e. Us ! But having owned an Alfa myself (an old one, not those fan-dangled new ones)... I say to you, the love is a good thing and I still love those little red bewties,  the 105 was one on my list too! But be aware, grasshopper, he who snatches the pebble from my hand will live the fate of what the pebble has. And that pebble is an old Alfa that rusts like a mother, breaks down like old footballer, is fragile like your granny, trivial bits fall off for no reason and then require a snr technician to fix it....!!  Ah but, the character and that engine is a bewt! Happy shopping my friend!

But whatever you do, don't drink the water @symsy is slurping on!

I did it when I was 21, had no clue what I was doing, lobbed up to a car yard, looked at 2 cars, bought one and off I drove (Mercury Capri :) ) insurance was back then pretty easy to sort but expensive. Broke down once, timing belt on a non interference engine, overall was a great experience. Did over 20000 miles in 5 months, the timing belt and a couple of tyres was it. Left it with someone that I met and got a little of my money back :)

it was a reasonably cheap car doing it with something expensive would not really make any sense....

Mind you, I've always wanted a Montreal.   Apparently you also need a healthy myki account and to be good mates with a mechanic named Toni

If it still had the twink then yes, but not with a pinto in there. Shannon's punted an immaculate (and I mean flawless) road going twink last month for $70k, at least with a road going one you'll always get your money back and not struggle to sell it on. That one will always be difficult to shift and not a nice car to drive on the road.

The 635csi is a nice, cheap option and there are some tidy ones here in Oz. M3's of any flavour are great, E30 is the pick and Luke's not afraid of LHD so that's an option. Personally I'd steer clear of anything miley in the E46 or newer and to be honest as a daily I'd avoid the V8 unless you want to lose your licence. They're a stunning car, but a real licence loser. As a weekender though I'd look at the E30.

Classics, well if the cash is available then an early 911 is the winner, but as a 'tick the box' then an Alfa of some flavour would be good. I do know where there's a Giocattolo, doubt the owner would ever sell it but he does own a workshop specialising in Alfa's...

GT3. Yeah, once you're done with all the others and just want one car to do everything. And are ready to lose your licence (here in VIC anyway). After being on Tassie with Nick in his animal of a GT3 I'd have one in a heartbeat, but I know I'd also be massively frustrated driving it here, I'd have to move to Tassie

I am yet to see a suggestion in this thread (or the many other threads of this nature) that raise a compatible proposition to a classic Porsche.............

Now there's a surprise Hugh......and here I was thinking you were a Frankston Datsun bogan like me........oh well, I guess this will remain on market a little longer. ??  the interior is right up your alley

Always liked the classic look of a Jaguar XK8, don't know about performance and reliability though.

Can we mention Jaguar here or not!

Don't see why nit, everything else has been mentioned.... I like too, but if we are going more modern I would choose a Mercedes CLK55 :)
