The '911 inspired window line' - the very thing they didn't do with the panamera which made the back end so ungainly.

I think it looks great personally - will make the aged Model S design a bit old hat.   I also like the low speed hum which sounds very sci-fi.

Just get rid of the turbo badging

The grand tour has finished ,,,,season three was the last ,,,The last episode 14 had a very emotional Clarkson ,May and Hammond "tears" ,,,,they intend to still do one or two big adventures each year ,,,but the show as we know it Eg the old Top Gear formate  has come to and end sadly ..

Not really finished.  The Grand Tour studio parts are finished.  The Grand Tour has at least one more season, and maybe more thereafter.  As you said they are going to do all 'specials' from now on.  I don't think it is just one or two - a whole seasons worth, plenty of time to get Taycan jokes in.  I would be surprised if they didn't do an electric vs electric vs electric show.

Interestingly it's the detailed analytics available from streamed content that has shaped grand tour from the first series on - dropping the american, dropping the studio guests, and finally dropping the studio altogether.  They know what people watch the most of.

looks good in red ,like the idea of the traction control ,suspension settings other key driving function buttons on the console in front of you as to being down on the center console ..

Not a big fan of all the tec stuff and touch screens as I  prefer my cars simple and yes I too would prefer a old school button or switch ,but I am certain I am in the minority and or my thinking shows my age  ...Most potential buyer will want all that Hi tech crap as I think this car appeals to the Tech minded person and the younger generation ..

It’s Porsche Versus Tesla Facing Off in Germany’s Green Hell

Bloomberg Elisabeth Behrmann, Dana Hull and Christoph Rauwald,Bloomberg Sat., 14 Sep. 4:51 am AEST

(Bloomberg) -- First there was derision. Then mockery turned into admiration. Now a battle is unfolding between two of the most revered names in the automobile world, Porsche and Tesla Inc. on one of the world’s most challenging race tracks.

The two automakers are vying for electric vehicle bragging rights on Germany’s Nürburgring, a circuit with 73 tight turns (Silverstone in the U.K. has 18), changing elevations and a brutal length of more than 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) winding through a leafy forest, earning it the nickname “Green Hell.”

It’s here that Porsche’s new Taycan Turbo S set the record as the fastest four-door electric car last month, clocking in at 7 minutes and 42 seconds. The feat wasn’t lost on a rival sitting thousands of miles away in California: Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk. Always one to relish a good fight, Musk picked up the gauntlet and has dispatched a Model S to the German hinterland to reclaim the bragging rights as king of the electric sedan.

“We welcome competition, it helps you to get better step by step. But of course you always have to compare apples with apples,” Porsche AG Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume told Bloomberg Friday on the sidelines of a panel discussion near the Frankfurt auto show.

The epic battle between incumbent and upstart has been infused with social-media feeds that have energized die-hard fans on either side of the Atlantic. Adding to the frenzy is former Formula One racing champion Nico Rosberg, who chimed in on Twitter offering to pilot the Tesla. Musk happily accepted in a tweeted reply, but it’s unclear who actually will be behind the wheel.

Porsche’s Blume said Tesla had selected another driver “who knows the Nürburgring well,” but he declined to provide a name.

Musk has a lot riding on the challenge. After Porsche unveiled the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S as its first electric cars last week, he teased the brand for its nomenclature -- a turbocharger is only found in a combustion engine. Following the initial ribbing, he found more charitable words in a later tweet, acknowledging the Taycan “does seem like a good car” and its Nürburgring track time “is great.”

Blume said Friday the respect is mutual, but was careful to note the Taycan’s record was achieved with a normal series production car that came straight from the assembly line and can be purchased by customers. Tesla, by contrast, has already been working for about two weeks near the track to modify a Model S for racing purposes to achieve the fastest-possible time, the Porsche CEO said.

While a series version Model S wouldn’t be able to beat the Taycan’s lap time, a modified race version with tweaked suspension and brakes “could go in that direction,” Blume said. “We have a lot of respect for Tesla. They have achieved a lot and Elon Musk built this company from scratch.”

The stakes are also high for Volkswagen AG‘s luxury sports car unit, which has watched Tesla turn itself into a veritable alternative for customers seeking a high-performance car but with an electric powertrain, an open flank that the Stuttgart-based manufacturer now hopes to protect with the Taycan.

Musk posted on Sept. 6 that a Model S would make an appearance at the track “next week.” Indeed, a modified Model S has been spotted testing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, according to Car and Driver, which appeared to show the car on the track as part of a general driving session open to others. The model sported flared fenders and an enlarged opening at the front, probably for extra cooling.

When exactly the car might attempt to break the Taycan’s record remains shrouded in mystery. Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment on its plans. A spokesman for the Nürburgring said Tesla has not officially booked exclusive time with the track.

The Tesla-Porsche competition may be a marketing spectacle, but one that nevertheless helps to draw attention to electric vehicles, said Gene Munster, a managing partner at venture capital firm Loup Ventures and longtime Tesla bull. Munster predicted Tesla would race a souped-up version of the Model S at Nürburgring, and that it will beat Porsche’s Taycan record.

“Elon wouldn’t take it to the track if they didn’t think they would win,” Munster said in a phone interview. “He’s fiercely competitive, and he loves sticking it to traditional automakers. It’s his hobby. He feels confident.”

Tesla tweeted on Sept. 11 that a Model S with a new “Plaid” powertrain beat the record for the fastest four-door sedan at Laguna Seca, a race track near Monterey, California, though the time wasn’t achieved during a competitive event and hasn’t been endorsed by the raceway.

Pushing the round below 10 minutes is the ambition of all Nürburgring daredevils. The track is open to both professional and amateur drivers, and the fastest time with a street-legal sports car was 6 minutes and 44 seconds, performed in a Porsche GT2 RS MR on Oct. 25 last year, according to the circuit’s website. That’s an average speed of 185 kilometers an hour for the 20.8 kilometer stretch.

Musk's full of shite as usual. Blah blah blab blab hyperbole to his fanbois. His Tesla won't turn up and if it does it'll be all smoke n mirrors and not official or extremely modified … I'll back the Porsche brains trust all day long to smack his arse in a standard vs standard car  - or smack it with a bat in a modded vs modded racer

Yes I agree not a Musk fan in any way Con man in my view...............Apparently they TESLA  have been at the ring several times over the past few weeks ,,,obviously with out success at this stage ,or Musk would be banging his drum about how good he is ,,,If Tesla does do a better time it will be done through track focus modifications to the car ,image and article below of these mods already ,exist , R spec tires and spoilers added wider rims etc  ,,,,,as Porsche state we have taken a car straight from the show room in standard production form and did the best possible lap we could on that day ,,,it seems at this stage Tesla are not able to do this ...............???

Playing catch-up? Here is everything you need to know about Tesla’s busy week in Germany.

After a week of hype, Tesla is yet to put down a fast lap at the Nurburgring in its attempt to wrestle the electric-car lap record from the Porsche Taycan.

If you haven’t been able to read every word on the internet about this bold record attempt, this story will give you a rundown on all we know so far.

After talking to well-placed sources at the Nurburgring on Thursday, CarAdvice established Tesla has in fact been planning a record attempt since before the Porsche Taycan did its 7 minute and 42 second time.

When the first photos in Germany appeared mid week, it looked like Tesla might have been planning a bit of a fudge, building a car with carbon-ceramic brakes, wider wheels, semi slick tyres, fender flares to accommodate a wider footprint, and a rear wing.

But it now appears Tesla is preparing a special edition Model S with a level of performance that goes beyond 'Ludicrous' mode.

A discreet plus symbol after the 100D badge was the first clue. The other less subtle clue eventually came from Tesla boss Elon Musk himself when he described the model being tested as having a 'Plaid' mode.

Rather than describing a woven shirt, as the dictionary says, the 'Plaid' Musk is referring to is a reference to the movie Spaceballs. Rather than travelling at warp speed, they travel so fast they go “plaid” – because the world goes blurry.

“The only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid,” Tesla founder and boss Elon Musk tweeted overnight, confirming the powertrain will have three motors.

oav4xkyk57nrenct8r0t.jpg

“Plaid powertrain is about a year away from production & applies to S, X & Roadster, but not 3 or Y. Will cost more than our current offerings, but less than competitors,” he added.

Musk also confirmed the Tesla Model S at the Nurburgring is a seven-seater, meaning that even if it fails to beat the Porsche Taycan’s lap time there’s every chance Tesla might be able to claim the title of world’s fastest seven-seater.

If that happens, expect the internet to explode because clearly that’s not as impressive as beating Porsche and not much of a consolation prize. In fact, if this story from Jalopnik is a guide, we’re heading that way in any case.

As Tesla is finding out, it’s not that easy to set a lap record at one of the most perilous race tracks in the world – all 20.8km of it.

Which is why it’s highly unlikely former Formula One driver Nico Rosberg will take the wheel during the record attempt, despite offering his services via Twitter and Musk appearing to accept the offer.

First of all, Rosberg is not qualified to drive on the Nurburgring during automotive industry track test days. And, as our photos revealed on Friday, Tesla appears to have already employed the services of a more qualified driver, Germany’s Thomas Mutsch, an experienced Nurburgring and Le Mans racer.

For further evidence of Mutch’s credentials, take a look at him getting some serious air at this year’s Nurburgring 24-Hour here.

Nurburgring locals who CarAdvice spoke to in Germany on Thursday said the record attempt could happen as early at next week, with Tesla apparently having secured a one-hour slot during one of the automotive test days.

In the meantime, stay tuned to CarAdvice and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as events unfold.

Our spy photographers are on their game and they understand the massive interest in Tesla’s Nurburgring campaign.

They even sent images to us while the Tesla was still on the track on Thursday. So we’ll be sure to check our emails a little more often – even in the middle of the night – as long as the Tesla team is at the Nurburgring.

Why do all these car companies bother with records at the Ring?

They're never 'Factory standard' cars, as they fit specially made tyres, added aero bits, tweaked engines and probably gearing that would have a final drive ratio that would sustain 3459kph, so its just a marketing pissing contest.

From what I have read about the Taycan lap record ,that is what they did , factory spec car that was registered ,and Porsche seem pretty confident in saying there was no tuning or tweeking to the car ....

I can see in the images that a race seat and what looks like a roll cage was added ,,,presumably for safety reasons ...

Regardless of what Tesla do I dont believe they will go faster ...Why because they are new to the Ring ,Porsche has had decades of testing and racing there ,,,,they have probably done more laps around the Ring than any other manufacturer so they have a lot of Data and experience to draw from ...............Tesla dont

I get that they run GT3s and GT2s etc round there to compare Motorsport credentials and pace.  But electric powered family car lap record.  Kind of defeats the purpose eh?

Its a marketing tool ,,,you would not believe the amount of fools I run into who can quote ring times and 0 to 100 times on car brands

they seem to base their opinions on how good car is based on this data even though they have never driven the cars they speak off ..

plenty of great cars out there with average performance numbers and no ring time that are great drivers car as we all know 😀
