I had a good laugh at this bit..

 

Yep. I know at some stage I am going to remove the engine and do the pushrod tubes, barrell gaskets and anything else I can find.

 

Just want to drive it now.......

Shift Shaft seal now replaced.

 

I strongly recommend anyone who is thinking of doing this job to wait and do it when the Transmission is out of the car.

 

I have sworn, banged my head, stabbed myself witrh sharp objects, broken tools, skun knuckles and really shown my age and lack of flexibility.

 

Only attempt it if you are an 18 year old jockey who has just drank a litre of red bull.

 

It was one of those jobs that when I got half way through I wondered if the leak was "all that bad in the first place"......

 

Its done now.

 

One step closer to registration.

 

Obtained a nice letterheaded certificate from Porsche Australia so the local rego boffins can verify the build date this week.

 

They were most helpful as you cannot obtain a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche Australia if it was delivered elsewhere. I tried the factory but they refrred me back to Porsche Australia. I thought I was delaing with telstra there for a minute.

 

But they came through!!

Are the build date doc's an inspection requirement Steve?

 

And I know the feeling re lack of flexibility with working on cars nowadays. Lactic acid build up seems to happen a LOT quicker than I remember. My new $40 Repco floor creeper is a godsend! I highly recommend getting one if you havent

When they do the identity check they need to verify build date, however its not stamped anywhere on the body.

 

They may not need it, I just wanted to have it just in case.

 

I have a creeper, but there wasn't enough clearance under the car for my generous frame + creeper.

Update the seal is still leaking.

 

I was loathed to reveal that a previous owner or tech had completely fecked the outer seal race.

 

So, I must replace the gearbox nose and do it properly.

 

Unlike others.

 

This is the wrath of 912's not good enough for specialists, good enough for auto-tune.

 

We fix.

 

Properly, albeit slowly.

 

On a good front, I have had several calls from people wanting to buy. Consensus says that the median price is 28k.

 

I really can't sell this car as I am in love with it.......maybe after a few months of coffee trips and sunday lopes.

 

I would make a crap car dealer.

Buggerred my Back in the process.

 

I can't believe all the interest in 912's at the moment.

 

I have a guy coming up when its registered to look at it, even though I have said I want to keep it for a while, he's pretty keen on it.

Slowly!

 

I am awaiting some front calipers as I am not happy with the drilled and bastardised set up on the front RHS.

 

So have found a nice refurbished bare set so will get those on when they arrive.

 

Mucked about with tune on the weekend.

 

Its running very very well now, however I will have to adjust when its on the road.

 

Noticed that the shift joint bushes had some play in them as well so just decideing whether to re bush the stock one or just buy a WEVO PSJ(got WEVO smattered all over my Carrera 3.0 so know how good it is!)

 

In the interests of stock, I did think about getting some bushes from "The Coupler Whisperer".

 

Other than that shes on the back burner as paid employment and family has taken a front seat of late.

 

I am about 99% complete just need to get the brakes on and bled then make t5he inspection appointment and get the relevant permits.

Fair enough.

 

To be honest I was happy with just rebushing my coupling with the $12.95 factory bushes. Eazy job and the pay off is great.

As you well know, you can have all the new fancy shifters etc you like but unless you set it up right it won't do squat as to how it feels to shift.

Yep. I went for a Wevo shifter, mounts and PSJ and the difference was huge. Only after spending countless hours fine tuning my adjustment.

 

Then I had to fine tune the way I drove it.

 

For the purposes of the 912, you have influenced me to get stock ones.

Lots of 912 talk on the forum, which is terrific as they don't always get the credit they deserve.

It's that last 1% that really breaks them!!!!!!!!

Will probably repaint it later on. After I have enjoyed her little charms for a while.

Ok so I have removed the rear axles to rebuild the CV joints.

 

Ordered some new ones made by Empi, which by all accounts are CRAP. Of cousre I read this after ordering them.

 

Ho Hum.

 

So will rebuild mine.

 

Why?

 

Well I thought I'd run through the gears while she was up on stands, which was fine.

 

Upon looking underneath I noticed grease flung everywhere. So the inner LHS boot has failed or the Joint has failed.............

 

Good thing is that the oil leaks from the engine, after closer inspection is just Grease flung on the Barrells and stuck there.............

 

Woo Hoo.

 

Bastard allen headed bolts are hard to remove though..................we march on though...

EMPI used to be good, I think they've turned bad now that they're trading on the name

 

I hope (am sure) you'll pull them apart and they won't be too scored and will all go back together with nice grease and a boot.

I am hoping that I can just repack woth Swepco Moly and reboot.

 

I am still battling with one stubborn allen bolt, steady does it and I should be able to get it off..........

Got tired of trying to remove the allen head bolt the gentle way.

 

Cut it off at the head, removed the axle and then put two nuts on and wound them against each other.

 

Bolt now out. It was a gamble as I didn't know if there would be enough exposed thread to do this.

 

The CV joints do feel a bit past it so will try a local CV specialist and see if they can replace the worn parts and balls.

 

I've not cleaned them yet to inspect as I have been dancing around my shed in the glory of the triumph of getting this off.

 

I was chipping away at it in random free time, mostly late at night.

 

I do love old cars But sometimes I wish I hadn't started some jobs. Then again I wouldn't sleep that well if I left them alone.

If at first you fail....make sure you don't fail again!!!

 

Well done with the locknut solution!

 

If first you fail, get out the cutting disc.

 

I hate to do the "last resort" however time and time again, it should be the first resort.

 

This car will get registered one day.

Astonishingly I have received my empi axles from Pelican Parts!!

 

That was uber fast.

 

They come pre packed with grease as well!!

 

On they go tonight after the house goes to sleep.

 

I will rebuild the ones I have removed just in case the empi failure rate is true.

This is a disease is it not?

 

I have now installed both empi axles, I am hoping that they last longer than the indications I am getting from the 912 BBS forum.

 

They look very well made, maybe its because they are only made for VW's? Oh well I shall find out.

 

The axles I removed from the Car are stripped and upon inspection, they are shagged. every ball bearing in the CV's is damaged and there are wear marks on the inner and outer races.

 

I am seeking to get some new GKN-Loebro CV's for the shafts, just in case th Empi's pooh their pants.

 

My Brakes are on their way so we are getting close to being on the road.

 

Had the service manager from Porsche Centre Adelaide over for Tea the other night and he has offerred their trade plates so I can do some on road shakedown tuning prior to the 150km round trip for inspection and rego.

 

He also gave me 3 massive 1980's dealer Showroom poster for my shed. a 956 , a 962 and a 944 Turbo Cup Poster.

 

I shall post up some pics later on!!
