The 991, 911R’s spiritual counterpart…

I’m sure a lot of us watched the CH drives video in which the direct correlation is made between the 991 911R and the Peugeot 205 1.3 Rallye some years back now!

Well with a long unscratched itch for a 205 GTi, a seed was planted, problem? The 205 1.3 Rallye is a mainland Europe market only car, so for many years, it was merely a stupid fantasy… but the problem is, my friends are very good enablers… 😆

Enter May 2023, Girona Spain…

As it turns out, I was going to be there in June, and a good mate lives close by on the costa brava coast… enabling = sorted

And so with that, the deal was done, and the new to me Frenchie was delivered to my mates place

I have to say, for some years now I’ve longed for that slow car to drive fast… consider it box ticked! Lightweight, RPM & Engaging… it really does offer up an experience that much faster modern metal (GT3 incl) does at, albeit illegal pace!

Fantastic.

I trust you’re enjoying it?

I know the Rallye is a unique and special car, but I’ve owned a series 1 205gti with a friend.

I enjoyed owning it , but now in retrospect I don’t miss it.

how does it ride on Sydney roads?

I have to be honest, it is harsh… but the seats are quite comfortable, so it’s tolerable!

Living a stones throw from the RNP, this is my little tool for that job!

I did my first quick drive with my wife last weekend, and she said it’s a very cool, she’s somewhat fond of it, but not a car she would want to be in for a long journey, and I tend to agree! But that’s one better than the RS… I can barely talk her into that one!

It’s a very fun device for driving, the feedback is incredible and the twin side draft webbers really give it some lungs at high RPM!

Yes - hope you bond with it and keep it for a while.

As a expat Sydney boy, RNP would be great in a 205.

I didn't really bond with ours, and my wife was lukewarm at  best about riding in it.

They are super light, which is great, but I remember laughing about an article which described the body as having the structural integrity of a crisp packet! My old 911 felt like a bank vault by comparison.

They ought to stick to cheese & wine making 🙃

That being said, a picnic basket in the trunk with a baguette, some cheese & charcuterie, a bottle of Krug and a carton of Pall Mall sounds like the ideal day out...

They’re a proper hoot to drive, have long considered bringing one of these or the 106 variant over. Wife had the Citroen Saxo VTS new back in the day, it embarrassed many a much more powerful car on the few circuits we / she took it to. Same as my old 1.9GTi, albeit the one day I got stuck behind some straight line junkie in his Carrera CS at Silverstone was the only time the GTI’s lack of straight line speed annoyed the crap out of me !! 🤣

This was on the way in, well captured... (Young gun Tom Brookes, I think), if so he knows the car quite well.

Based on the photos there were so many 911s there.

A sea of 911's ... funny, it seemed this annoyed some punters! But I spoke to a lot of people about both cars truth be told!

By chance, just watching a Youtube from a few years with Chris Harris, and this includes him talking about his 205 Rallye.  Did he want to talk to you about your car?

Non-Porsche punters seem to think all 911s are the same. Same as non-JDM people think all wrxs, and all evos are the same.

Shame I missed it.

Indeed we did have a little chat about it and he had a good look over it, he was rather amused that we had set it up as such… I told him it’s all his fault 😂

That is pretty cool - I need to order his book.

It's not a bad book actually, although it does seem as though he's written it chapter by chapter, without regard to the overall story, as the some of the same stories are repeated several times.

As expected, and as you'd gather from other interviews etc, there is nothing about his current private life, wife, children etc, but plenty about growing up.

Whatever you do, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY on the other "book" on Chris Harris available from Amazon.  Wasted money, airy fairy prose, about 50 double spaced pages, I actually wonder whether it is entirely written by ChatGPT
