Hehe. I had actually found 2 decent looking ones on there via The Samba. But I had read reviews that the company is pretty average to deal with.

If you were serious about importing your own it would probably be best to engage an agent to act on your behalf - I am sure others on here can give advice.....

Ps. Nothing to lose running a gumtree wanted ad - especially as you are realistic in terms of targa, lhd etc etc. Might scare out a roughie.

A word of warning though, last time I did this I was offered several cars with, let’s say, registration irregularities...  The sellers were mostly upfront, but were not keen on advertising these cars for the world to see.

I'd think I'd like to try for an on-shore car first. If that didn't work out, then I'd definitely look O/S.
If that didn't work out... THEN I'd look into watercooled. ;)

Yeh, I had a WTB gumtree ad, but got sick of people messaging me simply to tell me I was dreaming. I know for a fact that there are < $50k cars out there... it's just a matter of finding the right one.

By 'registration irregularities' do you mean - not possible to be registered in Aus?

Don't mind it myself but poor Obrut is yellowphobic.

I'd happily buy that car... but my budget - even if i stretched it a bit would still be way off his asking price.
I'm not really the sort of person that would low-ball someone either.

Better learn how to be! Welcome mate and GLWSearch - my 2 cents, just cut to the chase and buy a 987 Cayman S man for $45k and laugh at half the AC cars as you fly past them in the sun with your AC on :Chuckle2::ph34r::ph34r:

Just went to check the lobster pots , unfortunately empty because a mate just ran off with whats in one of them.. a 2.7,manual,coupe sold early 40's ..and yes it needed some love but it tells me they are still out there .   I measure whats happening mostly from the fisherman than show me their catch at the dockside and or are eating on a plate. Rarely does this stuff get to carsales if at all.

I wont say more cos it aint fair to new owners.. but just means as you are, keep looking and change bait..  You will find one.. its a softening market in some areas.. you are a man with money and vision..  Hold your money , not everyone is up for the work.. My suggestion dont just jump at the crap thats out there.

Lowball is a perception , value your money, its a question , you can be an admirer at a price that suits you , no need to be rude. Perceptions move.

During my expedition to find an 80's SC Targa - I ran across multiple porsche specialists (mechanics) that had a waiting list just incase any owner came in looking to sell their car. Maybe hit up your local specialist and see if they can keep an eye out for you :) I ultimately ended up getting a my car by knowing someone, who new someone that had it locked in their garage. I'd get involved in your local porsche club meets or cars and coffee etc as someone else suggested and make some friends who know people :) The key here is to find the ones that aren't on car sales or gumtree. They are definitely out there! Good luck!

Lowballing isn’t necessarily an insult.  It’s just a difference of opinion of what the car is worth.  As long as you honestly value a car at what you offer, and are prepared to buy at the offer, nothing rude about it.  I bought my car significantly under advertised price.  I looked at it, made an offer on what it was worth to me, and the owner accepted the offer.

lots of sellers ‘highball’ by advertising above market - as a buyer you either buy or move on.  NBD.

at $45k budget I would be looking at cars priced well into the $50s.  A seller who is rock solid on price will soon let you know if offers are not going to be considered.

Remember that at 45k you will probably have to spend a ton of $$ on it.

I looked & looked for my 944 S2 (at the peak of the market) & ended up grabbing the first one I could actually secure (i missed out on about half a dozen - as I was waiting to inspect interstate cars & closer buyers were getting there first).  I bought mine sight unseen with a PFAer giving it a once over for me.

I had to spend lots sorting it out (more than 3 times the purchase price so far).  What's the old saying - "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche".

As long as you're prepared for LOTS of work - the reward is YOU KNOW what's been done & that it's been done correctly.  I'm really happy with mine now (sadly).

Air cooled was my dream too however my budget was the same as yours.  996s/ Caymans & well sorted late model 944s ended up as my only realistic hunting ground.

It's always good to know a guy with a big shed and a hoist!

I sense that statement  a seminal statement for a set of PFA inspiration guidance and destiny cards

It's even better when the shed/ hoist guy is patient enough to deal with questions like,

"What is that thing there?"

"What does it do?"

"But why?"

"So what does it do now?"

"It's too tight...........I think I just hurt my hand!!"

"Do we really need to put that back on?"    "Are you sure?"   "Maybe we could leave it off & just not worry about it!"  "Oh.....so that's the gear box.......I suppose we better put that back on".

etc, etc, etc.........................................

Im glad I can entertain

Them lobster pots have 911's in them mate ;)  Or did have .. come on , you are a man of words and word smithing.

Circumstantially .. to cover off herbs.. I live with a greek woman .. its oregano as the herb of choice and with ancestry from Crete , a lot of seafood that gets discussed in my house.

Hence todays given choice of Metaphor , I am also on BBQ duties tonight and was multi processing whilst writing the shopping list and playing on PFA!!

Furthermore, I was just showing my creative flair , sharing philosophy and ensuring  as a good life coach /motoring mentor through generous navigational guidance  through PFA bullshit value outlooks that AdRock doesn't get dissuaded from his goal by the replies or even worse get despondent and depressed.

I have also taken on your advice @tazzieman and whilst this afternoon playing with my Clock and its adjustment Tip ..refrained from writing or responding to any further PFA posts, to avoid future blending of my focus and enhancing perhaps the coherence of my replies.

@AdRock , I have set a few extra Lobster pots with your name on to see if we cant catch a 45K or less Lobster for ya .. Im an optimist

It’s just a difference of opinion on what an item is worth.  Be polite, and be prepared to make good on it.
