3.0 SC Engine Upgrade :)

So, as some of you may know, I have a bit of a dabble in rebuilding aircooled 911 motors..

Had a friend with a 3.0 and quite a few oil leaks.. with a lot of planning and help from friends in the USA, months of parts delays, etc.. we have upgraded this 3.0 SC to a 3.5litre motor.

Cannot really give away all the technical bits but most of you will know what's in there from the pics.

The brief was that he wanted the car to be a street car so dyno charts are not being posted at request of the owner. All dynos are different, and I have been in cars with "certified 200hp at the wheels with a dyno to prove it" that are no where near 200 hp at the wheels. Let's just say the number is substantially more than stock! I've driven 964s and 993s (stock apart from chip and zorst) and this thing feels way way quicker. The throttle response is instant. The torque comes in early thanks to the longer stroke and custom length rods (oops, might have said too much already ) and it is flat. And boy is this motor smooth... It's a real shame it's gone back to the owner.. I really didn't want to stop driving it! Might just have to build one for myself...

Anyway, here are some pics to tell the story.. not enough pics during assembly, sorry. But you can see the sorry state the motor was in. If you have an aircooled 911, and it "only drips a few drops after a drive" it is leaking too much!!

This thing hauls. Great vid Mike and thanks for the pre-vid run.!

Luckily for me Mike lives just over the hill and on a good day I hear the air-cooled symphony of Mike running the streets with these creations.  Today was one of those days..

To cut to the chase.. This motor is incredible, the pull into your seat when the pedal was pushed is an absolute 'fuck a duck this thing hauls' reaction.  Absolutely.  Verbatim.  It really makes you think about where your engine is and where is could possibly be.

Kudos, hat's off.  Looking forward to experiencing the next one.!

Outstanding work Mike..! I love your attention to detail and obsession with cleanliness.. Some of those engine pics are pure porsche porn.. 😎 I am sure this kind of work is not cheap, but I am also sure that a part of the expenses will also be added to the value of car.. Plus the added pride and ownership value of course.. 😃 Just out of curiousity, what is your normal turn around time on an engine rebuild like this, without the delayed shipping time etc.?

thank you!

Usually I can turn around a stock engine in around 3-4 weeks.

Cracking build and video.  The throttle response sounds amazing. Well done.  🤣 "This thing is Fkn nuts!" 🤣

Gotta admit, I have not experienced an aircooled motor rev as quick as this one... it took me by surprise. Might be normal for this style of build I guess.

Big smiles Mike. Rockin' the Pasha too

Wish it were my car! It's actually a really nice example.. very original underneath. The owner has some pretty nice taste when it comes to the finer details.

Very cool!  Tempting to send my perfectly good 3.2 to you Mike for this treatment.

Probably better to wait till it's less than perfect.. lots of $$ involved.. would have loved to spend more on throttles and twin plugging and DBW, etc... but the gains in performance (and straying away from the initial design brief) would have diminished with every extra $ spent.

Mike,

Love ya work!

I've noticed that you have spend lots of time and effort experimenting with exhausts.  From what you have seen what do you think is the pick of the exhausts for a street driven car?

The honest answer is, "I don't know".

Street driven cars that are mostly stock (engine wise) I think will be fine with any off the shelf muffler.

However modified motors with big cams, port work, itbs, higher comp, need headers that can flow and also need a muffler that will not restrict. And the off-the-shelf mufflers are too restrictive for a modified motor.

Which is the best muffler for a modified motor?

I don't know.

But I have had success using the GT3 muffler.  Others have had success using all sorts of custom made mufflers.

I don't see too many track focused cars using off-the-shelf sports mufflers which has to tell you something. But that is besides the point of the question you asked.

Mike has been exceptional throughout the process and very patient, I went into this totally green, no idea. We started discussing a standard build then my ocd and greed took over. Mike’s help as I went down the rabbit hole was priceless very resourceful particularly to acquire parts for the best value and how to achieve bang for buck, great work Mike, the recording and correspondence keeping me up to date was without question excellent (also many thanks to old mate in Kentucky, the Porsche revered, brother William - great work Mike, bravo, standing ovation, well done 👍🏽 Mike you are a champion!
