What's your opinion? Keep 996 or buy 997?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Well I haven't been on here for quite some time, (crap separation) but still lucky enough to have my nice car.

I have a sweet 996 (2000 model) which I have adored and love very much.

I was lucky to buy very low k one, and loaded with over 50k worth of factory options, and , it's a manual.

I love every time I get into and drive this motoring wonder, and I feel very lucky and fortunate to even be able to afford such a good car.

I know a few always worry about the ims problem, but dosnt stop me from loving these cars. In fact, I think that they are a steal for second hand one , considering mine cost close to 250k when it was purchased new.

I've been a little indecisive , as, as always, wanting more performance.

I've been tossing up to buy a 997 as I've seen plenty for around the 70-80k mark for a nice carrera. Even can get SModel in that budget.

If u know your Porsches, as this is my first one (after 10 years of sweet corvettes ) would it be a better choice to lash out an extra 30-40k and buy 997 or spend a bit and Mabey hot rod mine a little.

If I were to keep 996, I would upgrade suspension, add some out side paint bling, and install turbo. (Can buy full bolt on kit for 10 k )

Turbo maker says that it will be turn key reliable and won't ware engine as they run low boost.

I have been in 996 with turbo kit and it's been installed on car for long time with no issues at all, and , the extra power defenatly was a blast!

I think I would only need to spend 15-20k, and have super sweet 996, with way more power than 997.

Basically, is 997 that much of better car than 996?

I love my car, even has one off factory paint plus more options than most

Thanks

Dan

A Q : if he aftermarket turboed it , is that overcapitalising? If I went this approach , I'd want to hang onto it , do the IMS - as well as continue to enjoy the many options originally supplied. And go baiting 997s , theoretically speaking .

Thats a no brainer first series 997 still has the M96 engine and the IMS problems. Id go for the 996 turbo with the mezger engine and more chance of appreciating in value. Have read on some forums the 996 is under valued and the best bang for your buck porsche around.

I second this. the 996 turbo engines are very good. Or even look at a gt3?

GT3 might be a little out of the price range

Totally agree on the Gen 1 997. Worst of all is the IMS is not replaceable. Gen 2's are where it's at, but unfortunately they are in 996 GT3 price ranges still. Would still rather have a 996 GT3 over a second gen 997 C2.

I can't see how spending mod money on a 996 C2 would make any financial sense, if it were me I'd sell up and buy a Turbo 996 they are a hell of a car and they are good buying right now.

case in point - http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=SSE-AD-3400245&Cr=5

Not hard to get reliable HP out of them either!

This deal is so good, an onlooker has broken into a 'chicken dance' :P

Well thanks for the imput. I'm not after financial gain, but if I were to hot rod my 996, I would do it right.

I was mor interested in what a 997 is like. I've never been in one. 3.8 litre motor, sure to have more poke than my 996, without turbo

I've concidered the gt3 and 996 turbo as well.

Won't be doing next week , but I'm putting cash in piggy bank!

As I said, this is my first Porsche, unless I buy a gt3 or turbo car, I have no problem installing mods to standard 996.

Only reason I would do to my car is the fact it does have ton of factory goodies already.

Plenty time to consider, but like to hear what others would do

Thanks

my first p-car was a 2004 996. I loved it and kept it for 5 years, stepped into an rs4 for another 4 years, before getting a 2010 997tt which I still have. You can't really compare it to a 2, but as a car it is pretty exceptionable, and being gen2 I benefit from more power/efficiency etc. as others have already said your engine is basically the same if you are comparing 996 to gen 1 997, so really I would have thought you were making a aesthetic choice on exterior/interior. And I think on this opinion is changing. The once maligned 996 is becoming more attractive as it ages. It's a bit qwerky, and well that pretty much sums up Porsche's. The 997 is a little safe looking (boring?) in comparison.

Again, like others have said here, look at a 4s or if you can stretch to a 996t, I don't think you will regret it. You will get a low 4sec car (quicker than your 997) and whilst value might not be important to you now, I have a funny feeling in 5 years when you own a car that appreciates in value it will give you as big a smile as the stock turbo.

If in doubt just look at what modifying cars does to values. Car sales loves featuring them for months on end :)

No specific advice from me - comes down to personal preference. I agree with turboT, the 996 is aging well

If you want to see what can be done to a 996, track down Bora - he had made some very nice mods to his 996. There may have been a brief thread on it somewhere.

I have owned my 996 for 4 years now and like turboT mentioned it is a joy to drive.

It doesn't matter how good or bad a day I have as soon as I'm in my 996 I forget about everything and enjoy the car for what it is.

It's a shame they are tared with the IMS brush as they are really great to drive and I constantly get comments on how nice the car is.

I have often thought if I sold my 996 cab what would I buy? 996TT, GT3 996 , 997 series 1. Then I hop in my car and forget about it again.

Enjoy your pcars everybody old or new

Personally I think it's your car and you should do with it what you want. All this talk of future values is not the reason you buy a Porsche(or shouldn't be IMO). You buy them to drive them and ppl have been modding Porsches from the dawn of Porsche. I feel sorry for ppl with low K mint cars worth millions, who have never driven them in the rain or want to keep the K's low. All cars are meant to be driven and great cars even more so.

I think Ferris Buellers day off, got it right.

Cameron: The 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Less than 100 were made. My father spent three years restoring this car. It is his love, it is his passion.

Ferris: It is his fault he didn't lock the garage.

Cameron: Ferris, what are you talkin' about? [Ferris eyes the car hungrily]

Cameron: Ferris, my father loves this car more than life itself.

Ferris: A man with priorities so far out of whack doesn't deserve such a fine automobile. [Ferris walks around the car]

Cameron: No, no, apparently you don't understand-

Ferris Wow!

Cameron: He never drives it, he just rubs it with a diaper.

Autofarm in England offer a rebuild kit for 996 motors that can expand the capacity of the 3.4 litre motor to 3.7 litres or which turns the 3.6 into a 3.9. Apparently you can get up to 400bhp from the 3.9.

Autofarm are well reknowned Porshe specialists and in terms of damage to reesale this would potentially do the least.

Ran out of likes for the day but I like that text in bold T ^^ Good advice too.

Aftermarket turbo on a C2 = crickets on carsales. Go 996TT or 996 GT3 every day
