Interesting thread: My 964 is insured for $120k with Shannons.. but the premium is $1500!! And that is with "extreme limited use"....

Is that a normal premium to pay?

yes, it's considered more of a daily driver. My 993 was the most expensive by a long way. Despite it being the cheapest of all

Has anyone made a claim though Ryno? What are they like to deal with? My claim with Shannons was a breeze and they paid the agreed value without hassle (even though this was way above the cars current value)

Can't comment about making a claim, but good luck getting a quote with Ryno on a Porsche (unless they did a backflip again in the last two weeks).  Rumour has it the graduate actuary at the underwriters who Ryno broker to said no more, too many loss claims on "P"'s and won't be making up the losses and potential future claims at current market rates irrespective of new policy volumes any time soon so the shutters need to go back up in the short to medium term.

Great thread.  Looks like I got someone on the phone who doesn't know Porsches at Shannons.   When I enquired about limited use, covering mods, and agreed values that seemed to get pretty hard and each incremental quote went north and ended up being very uncompetitive not just on price.  My experience in insuring a Porsche for the first time to suit my needs, really surprised me (Currently a Ryno client with another vehicle). I found that the RACV as an overall package best suited my needs in terms of premium, excess, agreed value, restrictions on limited use and modifications and ongoing disclosure requirements.

I'll chime in on this.

The Targa is insured for $75,000 with Shannons. Premium is $1,000 for unlimited usage.

I'm 27 with no prior claims and a clean license.

*Sigh*.  My daily driver has been insured with them for 8-10 years and my house for 6.  Age 34.  No claims or traffic infringements.  Ever.  Regional Australia.

I just insured my "new" 993 with them.  2 days usage per week.  Similar value to your targa.  They quizzed me about my car history and if I've done any track days or driver training (yes).

$1800 - and quotes for other models (long hoods) were much the same.

LSV were much better on premium, but they wouldn't cover the whole purchase price.

was $744 for me to insure a 1971 longhood with them today with similar parameters as you (though i am a little younger even!). not sure why yours should be that much more. i would definitely try again..?

suburb?  Makes a big difference in the end.  If it is going to be nicked or vandalised or pranged in heavy traffic doesn't matter how little it is used.  The actuarial tables tell all.

I live at the same address for both cars.   72T is insured for around the same as the 993.   993 quote was $1,600.   72T is $360.    72T is on Historic plates, which halved the premium.   So, on full reg, it would be $720 to insure it.  Remember - same company, same address, same driver.   The only difference is the car.   I was told that the 993 is presumed to be more of a daily driver than a 72

makes sense, though presumably that view is going to be out of date soon with values as they are?

I have been very impressed with Shannons and their Porsche knowledge. If you cannot get the right answer from the "normal" people (based in St Leonards, Sydney), ask them to refer it to the specialists in Brisbane. They know their values pretty well.

I lost track of how much my 964 RS had gone up in value and still had it insured at 2007 values! Contacted them to increase the value by over 3 times and I expected trouble because because none had changed hands here in Oz for such a long time. For that matter, no RHD had changed hands anywhere with the price being public. The nearest was either an RS Touring or LHD cars.

I was asked to send photos and details which would be passed to their specialist. 36 hours later I go a call from somebody in Brisbane, who introduced himself and explained he was calling about the new agreed value. I immediately puffed up my chest and got ready for battle.........but I didn't need to because he stated straight away that I shouldn't worry as they had no problem agreeing the value. He had aclled because he wanted to simply chat to further increase his knowledge of the 964RS scene. Cool guy who really knew his cars and by coincidence, was also a BMW expert who was pretty blown away when he heard I used to own a BMW 3.0 CSL "Batmobile".

I haven't made a claim with Shannons (hope I won't need to) but I have certainly been impressed with their service and knowledge to date.

I also just made the switch to NRMA VVC (Veteran, Vintage & Classic) away from Shannons.

just make sure you don't drive it to work. Because it won't be covered. Pds also states you won't be covered if you take the car to grocery shopping. But I did confirm with them over the phone if while I'm on my recreational drive I decide to buy milk in supermarket. They said I'll be covered but I don't trust them.

My 3.2 is insured through Lumley Special Vehicles.  I recently updated the agreed value by providing them photographic evidence.

Conditions of the policy - Limited km's (5000km max/year), must be a member of Porsche car club WA, must be securely garaged at night, minimum driver age 25. None of these clauses causes me any grief.

Shannons renewal has just dropped through the post, will just be carrying on with them I think. It's a multicar policy covering both my 911 and the daily driver G4 Range Rover Sport (the only one in Australia). For both cars it's unrestricted with business use and I'm in construction, which is traditionally a loaded industry anyway when it comes to car insurance.

Targa at $65k, $1200

RRS at $55k, (same value as last year), $1100

The Ranga has been a source of much questioning when I've tried elsewhere (I imported it when we moved here 5 years ago), but driving it into Shannons here in Melb one day had everything sorted in about 5 minutes flat. They looked at it, found photos of it on the internet from the competition and realised it was the only one here, so couldn't be replaced anyway if anything did happen to it. I wasn't unreasonable in wanting a value above a stock standard car and they agreed with it straight off, they've stuck with that since. With the 911 I emailed photos of it and got $65k back the following day, so they've been easy to deal with. That ease of dealing is worth a few $$'s of my time saved not explaining the 2 cars to a few more agencies....

Gotta give Shannons a plug here. Just rang them to up my insurance to $85k, as I didnt want anything unforseen to happen on the way to rego inspection this Friday, and not be covered for full value (it was less as a laid up resto). 2 minutes on the phone and its sorted. Nominal increase in monthly payment to $56 from $48, and I'm happy

 Nice job Shannons

if you are not using the porsches as daily drivers, ask them about limited use policies.  They have a few options available.  It is governed by number of days per month (average ) per year.  What you don't use one month accumulates.  Better than kms per year.  These policies will drop your premiums quite a bit.

Something to think about.. a friend who was insured with Shann0n's recently suffered a mechanical failure which resulted in his car going off the road.  He was not injured and the car only had minor damage but was stuck in the weeds.  He called Shann0n's for help and after explaining his predicament was told it was a wear and tear problem and would not be covered.  Quick thinking and he said he'd hit a rock on the road, which damaged his car causing the crash.  An impact causing damage is covered, problem solved.

The moral of the story is they are an insurance company like all the rest and will find any loop hole to avoid a payout.

Give Porsche Insurance a call and see if they can find you an insurer to suit
