Dilemma re: selling my '76 911

I've bought and sold a number of cars over the years.

 

My modus operandi in doing so has been to supply prospective buyers with ALL the info I possibly could through the ad - servicing history, modifications, what I think of the car, why I'm selling it, how long I warm the engine up for, how often it gets waxed etc etc etc.

 

And then -

 

"Sorry, NO TEST DRIVES - I am happy to arrange to have the car transported to any specialist mechanic for an independent evaluation"

 

PLUS - I have one or two phone conversations with the interested party, and then email them to let them know that ongoing communications will be via email - I use the excuse that I'm a busy doctor, but the reality is that email provides a written record which can protect both parties.

 

This might seem extreme to you, but for the eleven cars that I've sold in the last 15 years, the longest that one's sat on the market has been four weeks - plus, you wouldn't believe how well the "NO TEST DRIVES" line sorts out the tyre kickers from the serious buyers.

I think that qualifying the potential purchaser heavily is the key.

 

Ask them; if it drives as good as it looks, will you buy the car?

 

The correct answer should always be yes, otherwise, no test drive ;)

Before you go for the test drive ask them this " are you in a position to make a decision & put a deposit down today? " if they say no or not really then maybe ask them to come back when they are ready to make a decision. I know it's tough but you're there to sell your car not amuse tyre kickers. Good luck.

 

Both the above are so important. Make certain they like what they see before the drive, then crunch them. Ask a qualifying question like either of the above and then decide your next step. 

 

I did not drive a single 993 in my search because none of them appealed enough to me to warrant a drive. I can assure you, if ever I sell there will be no test driving unless the guy is giving me the right signals that he is ready to part with the coin.

I've sold my last 5 cars to the first person that saw them! I'm straight down the line, honest and I've never had the issues I'm having with this SLK with the other cars.

I've never sold a car that was over $100k new either. I think maybe this car is in a different league that attracts more BS.

Before they even come I will be asking if they have driven an SLK350 before. If they say no, they will be told to go drive one at a dealer, I'm not entertaining any more of this rubbish.

I don't think I've seen that 911 above before FS. It needs era appropriate wheels on it!

This is all good car selling advice, but it conflicts with the porsche buying advice of 'go test drive a couple and see which ones you like' !

:) how true that is Coastr. To me, a dealer is somewhere you go and poke around to see if a particular car is for you. Then if you like, you go start buying privately.

Obviously with cars like 911s that may not be possible.

Possibly, the moment of guilt has passed, and I'm content to have her for now.

 

You know, I'll probably be posting this same thread up every year from now on. At least, until I get her painted. Then I won't want to sell her anymore  :rolleyes:

Hey Peter,

 

Good call hanging onto her. As you said, she owes you at least double what you would likely get for her if not triple. Sadly the sporto's aren't holding their value.

 

In my search for my 911 I spoke to Zag Automotive in Sydney, they quoted me 15K for a glass out bear metal respray and 7K for a re-trim. Hang on to her, save your pennies and give her what she deserves. You have invested so much already you might as well reap the rewards in 10years time when they become more sort after, that's my prediction anyway.

I have seen and driven this car, although I looked at it in poor light it presented very well and a massive amount of history. He was telling me about all the interest he had but when people found out it was a sporto or what a sporto was they lost all interest.

 

If it keeps dropping in price I think i might have to find somewhere I can keep it. ;)

Man that is a clean car. Considering what a rebuild costs etc etc I seriously would consider and then later if the sport box does drive me nuts get it converted. Still would be cheaper and better a car to many manuals at a higher cost. SteveF?

This is getting closer to what I would think is the right value for a 200k  2.7 .   This would leave plenty left in the budget compared to a Boxster. Is it worth a trip to Newcastle?

Cheers Harvs...  no trips to newcastle for me.  If i wanted an older car I'd jump at that one, but I don't think it's for me.

Hmmm, not a bad price there from Zag's. I think you're right - time to start saving the pennies.

 

I've seen that white sportomatic on eBay and carsales, looks really nice - the lack of interest in sportos is undeserved, they're actually a hoot to drive, and really add to the charm of cars of this vintage. Given the space and money, I'd buy another in a heart beat - I'd really love a Carrera3.o or SC sporto.

That's a nice car mate, I hope you do keep it for a while longer after making that kind of investment into it! 

 

with the 991 GT3's PDK only announcement, hopefully your resale will go up due to an influx of "I was into Porsche's with 2 pedals first" -_- hipsters
