PPI 1980 911Sc Melbourne

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

im looking at a guards red 1980 911Sc in Melbourne and am going to get a PPI done

Here is the car:

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Porsche-911-1980/SSE-AD-5168582

i got a quote from Porsche centre Melbourne for $1200 including a leakdown/compressions text ect.  This seemed a bit excessive seeing as I know the dealer principle and also am putting my name down for a 718 GT4.

Nineauto (forum sponsor) quoted $550 for the same service.

Im normally of the thought you get what you pay for but the PCM one seems excessive. On the other hand maybe they are more thorough and info used from the PCM one could be used to knock a bit more off the price when negotiating which could in turn pay for itself.

Whay say you all?  Am I wasting my money at PCM or do they do something special?

Would it be rude to ask of a pfa member to disclose the checklist from PCM and ask another for a checklist from Sponsor? At a guess one checks more things than the other? If identical, one charges over twice the hourly rate than the other. But may also provide a nice Caf'e Latt'e for you :D

The concensus is that independents will generally do a better / more thorough job ... the reasoning behind this is that they tend to do much more work on the classic cars than the Porsche dealers so they know what to look for with each individual model.

I have had inspections done by an independent and have had complete faith in what I've been told ... besides that, $1,200 is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a check over ... :Sweating:

Darren at Autocoupe gets the big thumbs up from me consistently for help and questions and more for the past 2 years, as a newbie to Melbourne Porsche people Sean Cairns also did a solid job and knows his stuff..

I wouldnt use a porsche dealer.

If Im talking newer cars I have had great service and parts prices from Porsche doncaster. For parts prices again on older cars , I have had best from Autocoupe and Porsche Doncaster

Looks like a nice car, be a rebel and just buy it without a PPI :D

$1200 in your back pocket can go towards the inevitable work that will be needed on a 38yo car regardless................

I am with everyone else stick with a good independent,i phoned Porsche Melbourne the other day just to get a price on a ppi on a 968 got quoted $1100 and the guy I spoke too didn't even know what a 968 was. After about 10 seconds I had to point him in the right direction tell him it was one up from the 944.You could try Cairns or Spencer Harrison both would do a good job.

I can attest to how thorough Autocoupe are. They really know their stuff with older cars, and are straight shooters when it comes to going over a car. I had a 928S4 that they gave me a list of things for. There was so much that it scared me so I sold the car! They’re very reasonably priced for what they do

I’ve booked it in for nineauto and sent them a list of specific things I want checked. Gotta support the forum sponsors!

Stuart’s good, looks after my car and I have absolutely no complaints. Others have their preferences and that’s fine, but with them being a forum sponsor it’s good to support them back.

should be about 3-4 1/2 hours labour

also if you want gear oil and engine case oil drained

r/covers off(head tension)

can be up to an hour to write it out and then also to quote on repairs

i used to do the bulk of them at hamiltons/pcm ,auto coupe and rrr

if i got a bad car i would get in touch with the prospective buyer to see if they wanted continue if the the list was going to be extensive.

also pissed off a lot of owners:ph34r:

Being a former PCM and Hamilton’s Guy can you let me know if the price difference is due to being more thorough and spending more time. Or is it more a matter of higher base and labour costs?

Where will you be getting the car serviced and have the work done? I would take it to whomever you plan on using

Porsche main dealer, not sure I would waste my time. With zreo knowledge of the car after 30 years its likely got patches of new paint, has had a minor fender bender, has some evidence of oil leaks, etc. You dont need to spend $1200 to find that out.

Like @hugh said - its an old car, you can probably pick most of the issues yourself. Its a nice looking car goin g by the pics with some decent money spent on it and the price seems reasonable compared to market, budget to spend some dollars getting it to where you want it. I wouldn't pay more than $600 on a PPI for an older car

If you know Dealerships /Workshops - just think who in PCM will be actually doing the PPI.

All their top gun mechs will be working on favourite customers nearly brand new cars, so they will get an apprentice to stop sweeping the floor and look at your Targa. I bet nobody in the workshop has any current experience on an A/C car (except if they have a hobby car at home). What they will do is farm the job out to a 'travelling' ex employee or mate who will drop in for an hour and charge PCM half what they bill you.

Sometime dealers will give an overly bad report to scare you away & then their sales guys buy the car for a bargain price themselves to flip later. PCM did this with a 993 I was interested in about 4 years ago. They made a motza on that dodgy deal.

Darren in Eltham is a good example of the sort of guy you should be looking for.

actually at pcm  there are many techs that have been there for over 25- 30+ years

i do think a lot of these guys do the older cars

although a few years ago i was sent there to check over an rs (the owner ,a goon of a prominent underworld figure)would not let the car leave the building..everyone at pcm was in awe of the car..a quick inspection however revealed it had been hit by a bus or something

Gday JNR... but I guess what you're saying is PCM didn't have the skills and needed to call in outside specialist help (you) to do an inspection on an RS ?

I'd love to hear the full story JNR,

I do have a strange image of the goon and his associates attempting to load a dead body in the froot

With the PPI at PCM the additional cost is necessary as there can be a few issues locating the datapoint in an SC
