Hi,

new to this forum, and new to Porsche ! 

I am finally in a position to buy my first Porsche and have spent a lot of time researching before I started to look and to cut to the chase, I was looking for a 911 SC or 911 Carrera from 1983 to 1989.  I would appreciate members comments on this please: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Porsche-911-Carrera-1985/SSE-AD-1140549/?Cr=10&sdmvc=1  and (for a fair bit more money) this one http://www.inventorysearch.com.au/view.php/ahhamilton_all_stock/1983_Porsche_911_SC_Red_Wine_Metallic_5_Speed_Manual_Coupe/7166800/  which I beileve was mentioned earlier in this thread.  Clearly, I would get a PPI before I bought anything - however, I am in the (unfortunate, or fortunate depending on your point of view) of residing in Rural NSW so have to spend a lot of time in virtual land first.  Also, if this is not the correct place to post this comment, I am sure someone will 'gently' let me know

Hi Hepkat,

 

Both look like good cars to me - the Linen blue car is a fellow forum member who I'm sure would be more than happy to provide you with information and the Burgundy car is being sold by a highly regarded specialist (no affiliation with myself) who is also a frequent personality on this forum. The forum as I am sure you will come to find is a great place to get information, good luck with the hunt!

Hey hepkat63, welcome to the hunt! 

As Im sure youve read through your search, after 87, the 911 came with a G50 gearbox, these usually see a higher sales premium. So maybe that is something you need to consider which you would prefer, if you are happy with the 915 in the pre-87 cars or if you would be better off with the G50. 
All the year models youve listed come with the 3.2 so theres no real big difference there (from what I found in my research). 

The '85 model youve listed has been for sale for quite some time, but Im not really sure why? I also considered it in my search. Theres a lot of history on the car, maybe its the colour that put people off it? 

I was in your situation while I was looking for cars (while Im in Brisbane, most of the cars seem to be popping up in NSW and VIC). Best thing you can do is just keep a close contact with the seller and get as much information about the car as possible, when youre happy with it, ask them if they are willing to take it to a PPI and put a deposit on it pending the results from the PPI. Aside from that... I dont really see what much you can do, except maybe ask a friend local to the car, to go there and put a deposit on the car when it immediately pops up?

thanks for the quick replies - most appreciated.    I quite like the linen blue colour - but i suppose it is not a popular 'porsche' colour as such - and no, owner is very helpful actually :rolleyes: - but like most nervous first time buyers (should be?), i like to get as much information from as many sources as I can as to make an informed all round descision .

First Up is This One :

Pro : Looks like a well cared for car and lots of wonga has been spent on it. Which is a good start.

 

Cons: Appears to have a "Battery Here" sticker on it so may have been used for competition work, although this maybe just an enthusiast being a little too keen. So enquire as to what competition work it has had.

 

Has a Nurburgring sticker on its rump, so the owner clearly is of the enthusiastic fold, which can have both good and bad points!

 

Pricing, I would obtain the Cars VIN and Engine #'s to research the cars identity and whether it left the Factory as RHD. If it is a Factory RHD car then it may well be a UK import. If its a UK import, very careful inspection of the body is required to identify corrosion risk.

 

If its a LHD Market car thats been converted, I would also strongly recommend careful inspection of the conversion and the parts used to do so.

 

I would also look carefully for evidence of accidents as the pricing does seem to be pitched on the lower end of the scale for this one and the reason has to be related to the cars identity and/or its grey market status.

 

I wouldn't rule out any import car, just pay close attention to identity and condition. Clearly the Vendor loves the car and has spent lots of cash on it recently.

 

Get Autohaus to do PPI if you are considering this one, before you.................

I wouldn't muck about and just buy this car because :

 

Its a Unique and nice colour combination

 

Its clearly a Minter

 

Its a Later and Last of the 911 SC's which means 204 Bhp Motor

 

It has no Wing on its tail which, to my eyes, is uber cool and less 'shouty.

 

The pricing ask is reasonable, however I suspect there's some wiggle room for a cash deal. This car I'd value at 48k and I am being a touch conservative.

 

In Short, Buy the SC because You Know it makes sense.

 

Plus you get the piece of mind that Autohaus will put anything thats wrong with it right.

Aimr75, yes your right you do have to consider the power output differences..earlier 3.2's with 231bhp are more sprightly against the later (86 – 207bhp, 87 217bhp) cars..although the power loss also gives you the smoother shifting G50 box in the 87 models and onwards.. for my average driving skills the G50 suits me better and the 217bhp is enough for me. Had a rolling start drag with a mates 84 3.2, the 231bhp was creeping away towards the end of second gear and 3rd gear onwards..not a huge difference but the earlier 3.2’s do have more go. Nothing wrong with the 915 box either, just gotta learn how to use it properly!..

If you can get the VIN(chassis number) we can help you with where it was first sold.(UK, USA, Canada, Japan etc)

On power and gearboxes...

 

The youngest SC you will find is 30 years old.  The youngest Carrera 3.2 will be 24 years old.  At those ages, condition trumps everything, as a sprightly SC will have retained more of its horses than a  flogged 3.2.

 

There is often a perception that "you don't want a 915 transmission...you have to have a G50."  In truth, a 915 is a good transmission.  It's tough, but a 3.2 is getting towards the top end of its ability to handle power (and last a long time).  Both a 915 and a G50 have a very mechanical feel to them that is lacking in modern cars, where there is a great deal of editing that happens to the messages  sent by the car to the driver.  If anything, the fact that the 915 transmission needs to be learnt to be used properly is part of the appeal of these cars.

Autohaus has already invested a bunch of time and effort into this car prior to listing it. You can be comfortable assuming they have 'righted' most of the obvious issues.

If you go look at it I bet it will present even better in person than in the pictures.

I have seen it in the flesh and the colour looks very nice.

 

I believe it may have had a few kms added recently :ph34r:

thanks for all the answers everyone - (this is SUCH a great forum), I haven't worked out how to reply with quote yet ... however, I will sooner or later !

They are both very nice cars for sure and I will certainly take the advice from this forum seriously and obtain the necessary information to do the background checks.  I am in the fortunate position I think that both the sellers are extremely helpful and (to me anyway) appear honest.   I also feel that the fact I live 600kms from Sydney in rural NSW is going to play a factor in my decision (as the miles I do are in extreme temperatures, always 100km plus, zero traffic, random attempts at road kill etc) - along with no service dealer being nearby.

Just to add to the above wealth of info, the blue 85 is probably lower priced because it also doesn't have stock wheels and AC.  For cars of identical condition and delivery origin, you'll find the general rule is that the stock standard ones command higher prices that those that have been modified, even if the modifications arguably make it a better car which I think might be the case with the blue one!

 

After saying that, that SC is nice too....

And the owner is quite handy at PCNSw Motorkhana days which shows the handling work done to the car is sensible and useful.

Ask him about the detail.

The colour is a cool eighties style, and rare.

I would find it difficult to pay 60k for a 968 CS M030 Car with the same Km's, let alone an S2.

 

These are wonderful cars but, not quite at investor class yet.

 

I'd estimate this cars Value to be in the 35-40k Range, and even then I am being generous.

It has potential I think. Put some original 930 black rims on it, retrim the interior in black trim, tidy it up..

 

930's are my dream car, but given the crazy low 944 prices these days I am a bit behind where I thought I would be. I won't be calling him or I'll start planning how I can purchase it....... :P
