Niko Posted 4September, 2022 Report Share Posted 4September, 2022 Found this at the Cars And Coffee in South Melbourne this morning. Not a 1600 but I do love these things. Don't agree with what he has done but each to their own..... Prefer an original L series in there...Good job though just the same. Dalai Posted 4September, 2022 Report Share Posted 4September, 2022 Seen it a few times. Not against engine swaps, but needs to be the same family IMO. Nice chatting this morning @Niko Yeatesy and LeeM

Epic engine and similar configuration and sound but a whole lot more modern and powerful, what’s not to like. I’d just change the rocker cover to a custom one with Datsun on it and confuse the punters. Needs a CSL style carbon air box. This one is truly awful

I'd be a hypocrite if I said I'm totally against it, as I'd fit a WRX turbo to a 912 or 356, but a BMW into a 260Z? Surely a GTR type engine would've been a better fit/idea? Each to their own and all that, but I struggle to understand a rotary into a Datsun 1600 like the one above, yet its not the first one I've seen

Was actually quite popular back in the day! Still not a fan of using other brands in swaps. I could have gone down a popular Honda K swap in my MR2 currently being rebuilt, but decided to keep it in the family and am having a stronger 5SFE block rebuilt with my 3SGTE head at more expense for the same HP. MY Datsun 1600 has a SR20DE. In two minds when I bought this with the swap already done as now would have been happy with the L20. But when I owned my original 1600 I always wanted to do a FJ20 turbo swap so would be hypercritical to be against a newer engine. Once I get it on the road I will decide if I'll try to build an N/A screamer or fit a hair dryer. Thinking keeping it the former at the MR2 should fill my hairdryer boosted needed... Or not... will wait and see.

Sure did. It had an L18 turbo, carby, methanol injection (no intercooler). I blew the engine up, rebuilt it, blew it again and then decided I needed a plan B. i installed a 13B Bridgeport, 51IDA Weber. Was just as quick but lacked torque and wasn’t anywhere near as exciting. Sold a couple of years later. Should’ve gone for a 13B turbo EFI. Never been a big fan of SR20 turbo, they just don’t sound good. I used to chase a couple of guys around PI and was just as quick. Niko Posted 24October, 2022 Report Share Posted 24October, 2022 BWAAAAAHHHHHHHH Spewinnnnnn... $50 -$60K. bugger, who'd have thought, and I let my fully restored one go for about $7K That one looks good though, just glad he hasn't molested it with other crap on/in it. Although having said that, I know the wing mirrors are the original jap thing, but I probably wouldn't have put them on, and also the jury is out on the wheels but I could live with them both and I am knit picking. Niko Posted 12February, 2023 Report Share Posted 12February, 2023 Found this gorgeous 2 door 16 at the Show and Shine held at Beaumaris this morning. Chris the owner, lived in the states for some years and when he returned bought his baby home with him. Most of the work done by previous owner..... It had been on the track in its early life. Car was really nicely prepared. Isn't it great to find a 16, that hasn't had some sort of turbo or other engine dumped into the engine bay. This car is just about my perfect car. Put my name on the long list of potential owners, if Chris ever decides to move it on...but why would you.. JWM and Dalai

DJM Posted 4March, 2023 Report Share Posted 4March, 2023 Neat, don’t like the colour and not a big fan of SR20 but over 400hp at the wheels would be a handful! asking $75k 😲
OBRUT Posted 27July, 2023 Report Share Posted 27July, 2023 Ok Datto experts, give me your view on this. The orange one is very neat albeit LHD and asking $75k! I know for a fact he wants $65k but too much for that car IMO. I often toy with the idea of buying one for nostalgic reasons (my first car was also a 1600), but I fear the drive will be very underwhelming 35 years later.
