Raven Posted 6August, 2019 Report Share Posted 6August, 2019 The Porsche 964 RS Variants In 1992, Porsche produced a super light weight rear wheel drive only version of the 964 dubbed Carrera RS for the European market. It was based on Porsche's 911 "Carrera Cup" race car and harked back to the 2.7 and 3.0 RS and RSR models. It featured a revised version of the standard engine, titled M64/03 internally, with an increased power output of 260 bhp (194 kW; 264 PS) and lightweight flywheel coupled to the G50/10 transmission with closer ratios, asymmetrical Limited Slip Differential and steel synchromesh. A track-oriented suspension system with 40 mm (1.6 in) lower ride height, stiffer springs, shocks and adjustable stabilizer bars without power steering (RHD UK cars did have power steering). A stripped-out interior devoid of power windows , rear seats, air conditioning, cruise control, sound deadening or a stereo system (optionally fitted) and new racing-bucket front seats from Recaro were part of the package. The trunk hood was made of aluminium and the chassis was seam welded. Wheels were made of magnesium and the glass was thinner in the doors and rear window. The Carrera RS is approximately 345 pounds (155 kg) lighter than the US version Carrera 2 model. Also available were a heavier Touring variant (with sound deadening, power seats (optional) undercarriage protection , power windows and numerous other comforts that were available on the standard Carrera again (optional). A stripped out light weight track variant with minimum interior and full cage was also available and designated as RS N GT. About the RS NGT In 1992, Porsche produced a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive only version of the 964 called the Carrera RS.The RS was fitted with a revised version of the standard engine titled M64/03 internally which had an increased power output of 256hp and a lightweight flywheel coupled to the G50/10 gearbox with closer ratios, asymmetrical Limited Slip Differential and steel synchromesh.A stripped-out interior devoid of luxuries such as electric windows, rear seats, air conditioning, and cruise control were part of the RS package, as were the bucket front seats. The bonnet was made of aluminium, the chassis was seam welded, and sound deadening was deleted. Furthermore, the glass was thinner in the doors and rear window. The Carrera RS is approximately 155 kg lighter than the standard model. The NGTs were further stripped-out with all carpets and soundproofing removed. Front carpets were replaced with plywood footboards, a full welded cage was fitted, and seats were Nomex-covered rather than leather. Additionally, the NGTs featured a long-range fuel tank, plumbed in fire extinguisher, external cut-off, fire extinguisher release, and a relocated DME. Harder and more track focused, these were the great racers and are still running in events like the Nurburgring 24Hrs. A total of just 290 were made. Raven Posted 6August, 2019 Author Report Share Posted 6August, 2019 964 Cup Based on the Porsche 964 was the 1990 racing version for the new Porsche Carrera Cup. In addition to an increase in output by 11 kW to 195 kW (265 hp) the 964 Cup had a welded roll-cage, a modified chassis set-up and the ground clearance was 55 mm lower than on the standard version. To reduce weight: the interior and the sound-proofing material was removed. The gear ratios were modified and it had non power-steering. The vehicle did have a catalytic converter and an anti-lock braking system (ABS). In 1992, the 964 Cup had a major revision. The vehicle now had the body from the 964RS and the engine now produced 202 kW (275 hp). Another major change was that the ABS could be switched off in the event of emergency braking or whilst the car was going backwards. The vehicle now had 18 inch magnesium rims, which replaced the aluminium rims. The car was lowered by a further 20 mm. WGA Posted 6August, 2019 Report Share Posted 6August, 2019 Great thread. I genuinely think the 964 RS is the greatest Porsche ever made. Although I am possibly a bit biased considering I own one. Here are some photos of my 964 RS and GT3 Touring from a story Total911 magazine did on my two cars last year. The contrast in size to the modern day 911 is stark. poli84, GTP911, hugh and 3 others

WGA Posted 6August, 2019 Report Share Posted 6August, 2019 For those of you who are interested, this video of a Porsche 964 Carrera Cup race from 1993 at Hockenheim is considered one of the greatest Carrera Cup races in the history of Porsche. Track limits? What track limits! When drivers were allowed to race. It gets wilder and crazier as the race goes on. Raven Posted 7August, 2019 Author Report Share Posted 7August, 2019 964 Carrera 4 Lightweight (Leichtbau) Conceived and built by Jurgen Barth of the Customer Sports Department at Weissach, the car was designed to be a stripped out racer that would be easy to import into the USA, as Porsche had many problems trying to federalise the 959 that came before it. Barth envisioned a single make race series created especially for the Leichtbau, and forged ahead to make the car ready for export, in the process creating the rarest 964 of all. Starting with a seam welded shell, Barth specified aluminium doors and front lid, fibreglass engine lid/spoiler and Plexiglass windows all round to pare the curb weight to a minimum. The weight saving continued inside with all insulation and carpeting removed, and replaced with lightweight Recaro racing buckets with harnesses, RS style door cards and a special Momo steering wheel. Cup car adjustable suspension was fitted, along with a chassis strut brace and hand made Matter roll cage. Even the oil tank is mounted within the wheelbase for better chassis balance, with a side mounted filler flap harking back to the 911s of 1972. The drivetrain consists of an RS spec engine with unsilenced separate racing exhaust manifolds, a close ratio 5 speed gearbox with a single plate clutch and single mass lightened flywheel, and the manually adjustable mechanical all wheel drive system from the Paris Dakar winning 953 of 1984. Ready to race, the car weighed 1,090kg, around 150kg less than an RS. Unfortunately a race series was not forthcoming for the Leichtbau to compete in, and the Carrera Cup took over as a worldwide forum for the 964RS, of which 2,282 ended up being produced. only 22 examples of, the Carrera 4 Lightweight were produced making it one of the rarest Porsche 911 ever made ..m g.cc/Y4yw7ZGj][/url] DUTTON GARAGE - LMCT 11675 Blue964 and JV911 1
