Peter M Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 I find I spend a lot of time pondering about what my next car will be. Only criteria is:Can't be too expensive,Doesn't have to be a daily driver so roof and AC are optional,Got to make me smile. Here is what I've been pondering lately: I've loved Cobra's all my life: It's a wonder I haven't owned a musclecar yet but worry I'd be disappointed unless it was a restorod like this one, well maybe not so flash but you get the idea: I like this video of Tim with eyes the size of dinner plates when his burnout catches him by surprise! What would you have? (Bonus points if you post a video!)
tazzieman Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 The Morgan is a good choice , but this has potential for a home special if you can source an old aero engine (how hard can that be?)
clutch-monkey Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 so many options i'd have such trouble deciding, i'm almost glad i have an old 911 sucking up all my money instead but i'd guess i'd have an E30 M3 or a caterham or something. tazzieman Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 Stratos. Just cos. This doesn't quite meet the "can't be too expensive" criterion.
Carrera28 Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 I think the Morgan 3 wheeler is an awesome choice and would leave you smiling every time you drive it (except when picking the bugs out your teeth!!) Some other thoughts: Caterham would be fun: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Caterham-Super-7-1990/SSE-AD-3018197/?Cr=0&sdmvc=1 http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Westfield-Se-2008/SSE-AD-3011731/?Cr=0&sdmvc=1 Alfa classic: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Alfa-Romeo-2000-1974/AGC-AD-14859794/?Cr=0&sdmvc=1 Some classic BMWs: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/BMW-30-1974/SSE-AD-2890195/?Cr=7&sdmvc=1 http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/BMW-635CSi-1980/SSE-AD-2701927/?Cr=5&sdmvc=1 http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/BMW-30-1972/AGC-AD-14590399/?Cr=1&sdmvc=1 If you are a glutton for punishment: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Jaguar-XJS-1978/AGC-AD-13336752/?Cr=13&sdmvc=1 Lancia Delta Integrale http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Lancia-Delta-1988/SSE-AD-2678738/?Cr=1&sdmvc=1 Fire up the Quattro http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Audi-quattro-1983/SSE-AD-2328404/?Cr=0&sdmvc=

hugh Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 This doesn't quite meet the "can't be too expensive" criterion. What's the price tag on your chitty chitty bang bang then? You can actually get a stratos in a kit form that hopefully is in-line with the fictitious and unspecified budget.
tazzieman Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 What's the price tag on your chitty chitty bang bang then? I already specified a special (an old truck chassis would do) and a disused aero engine ; oh look they are all over ebay to suit any budget The rest is just mechanical bits and pieces that most clever chaps could weld together with a couple of chums? murf Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 I'd actual drive my 65 gt fastback. Sits behind the Porsche and is now in dire need of a service and some road time.

Harvs11 Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 I'm still kicking myself for not buying a particular original, untouched '67 SS/RS Camaro back when they didn't cost too much. And If the right Mark II Jag comes along I might have some explaining to do.
Hounddub Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 To meet the "inexpensive" criteria but wanting some return my choices would be: M635csi 500SEC AMG (yes, a pre pollution gear one) Audi Quattro Coupe Renault Clio V6
DJM Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 RWD, plenty of grunt and as light as possible: - Clubman fits the bill - had a 400hp/tonne Westfield, loved it, survived, not going back. - Datsun 1600, sub 1000kg, say 220hp, 5 speed, LSD, Datsport adjustable suspension and big brakes. Keep it old school grunter on webers (none of that sr20 turbo malarkey). - early WRX built to look like mccraes WRC car in Tarmac spec. If Hugh gets to vote stratos then I'll have original narrow body countach. We'll meet regularly at the workshop.......
T-Man Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 Easy for me............C1 Vette. No second choice as I am smitten with these babies.
StevepGT3 Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 This Alfa! Had one of those for 30 years , great to look at , sensational to drive but heartbreaking to own . Two bare metal restos and no stopping the rust coming back, but mechanically as tough as a pair of old boots
Russ Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 before making a snap decision on my car I nearly bought either of the below. $60k is not too expensive right? This is probably a more reasonable answer

Cal Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 Obviously I'd have to settle for a Lynx replica, as they only built 16 of them and they are kind of valuable.
JV911 Posted 25September, 2014 Report Share Posted 25September, 2014 If I could only have one other car that couldn't be "too expensive" it would be a VK Group A "blue meanie" with modern underpinnings: suspension, monster brakes, IRS, LS6 with ITBs and of course 19" Aero rims. Original Scheel interior, half cage. Obviously I'd have to settle for a Lynx replica, as they only built 16 of them and they are kind of valuable. That's p0rn...I'll have a D-Type or Aston DBR1 please!
