Looking at 996 Ownership - Opinion sought

Question for you guys that seem to be up to date with the 996 market. Has there been any movement in the past couple years? Whilst this isn't a for sale or EOI post, I am considering offloading mine but I don't really know how much I would be hoping for. 104,000kms, IMS upgrade, tiptronic, eibach lowered springs, fister mufflers, 18" Cargraphic wheels, Alpine stereo upgrade, great but not awesome condition, horrendous grey interior (read; less boring more luxurious looking than black IMO). Are people buying autos or do they just sit there for months and months?

I do like it but it's becoming apparent it's not the best daily driver for my current situation, particularly for the kids safety.  Had to brake reasonably hard recently and my daughter smashed her face into the back of my chair. There are plenty of other practical reasons as you can imagine but it would still be tough to let it go.

Wow! Thanks for that! That's a lot of cars sold in 8 weeks. It says to me the market is more active than a couple years ago.

I'm home..!  What an adventure, what a brilliant car.  I've just put about 1500km on it and 3.5 tanks of juice through it, and not a demerit point lost  :)

Missed my flight to Sydney Friday morning, but the happy Virgin dude bumped me to the next flight - hats off to him..  Jetstar - not a chance..  Got to Sydney and caught a cab out to old mates..  What a top bloke, nice family, GREAT car.. Over it, in it, under it..  Had a really good look, and the history file to support it including 7.6k of IMS, clutch and seals etc that he forgot to mention in the add, sealed the deal for me.  What a tight and exhilarating drive - addicted for sure..  This car just feels so raw when you bury your foot, so different to others that I've driven, very impressed..  So, sealed the deal with a handshake and transferred the cash to old mate's account..  Cup of lebanese coffee and a suck on the shisha pipe (not me) and all is good.

A bit of a blast around Sydney and up to Katoomba to visit an old friend :)

Hit the road north early Saturday morning and head to Bellingen, just south of Coffs..  Soo many coppers on the road, so many flashing lights, so many dicks getting pulled over..  Stop at the Federal Hotel in Bello for a quick tappie and a poke around, place is fully booked so off to Coffs for the night.. Get pulled by the boys in blue, blow in the bag - all good, on your way..  Woke up bright and early (still on QLD time) and decide to go for an early morning blast around the old road up to Dorrigo..  What a great run, so twisty and fast, have another drink of petrol..  You can really watch the needle drop.!  Up through UIong, and up to Megan - I sort of forgot about the last 25km of dirt road - oh well, all part of the fun, but nice and slow..  Then over the top of the range in the crisp cool mountain air - get that into your lungs Pcar..

Down to Bellingen for a coffee and some breakfast and back through to Coffs..  Got caught going a little fast in a new 60k zone - the friendly highway patrol just flashed his high beam as a casual reminder..  If I were in a WRX I reckon the lights on top would have been flashing...  Off to Byron to the Blues - all access pass - to get home to have a beer..!

Started typing up my little story, remembering that I had better get to the airport to pickup the work rig..!  What a long 3 days..  What a ride..  What a fucgging awesome car..  :)

Thank you gentlemen for your patience, for answering all my 'noob' questions, and for taking this ride with me - it's been a pleasure, but really, I think it's only just begun..

Do I qualify for a PFA sticker now..!?

Cheers..!

Well done Woka.  Looks awesome and sounds like a great experience.  So you bought it on the spot Friday and funds were cleared by Sat and on your way? Took a risk on no PPI as the file was pretty comprehensive?  Do the fronts need a 10-15mm spacer to sort out a decent looking offset or is it just the photo.

Congrats.  Must feel great.

It all worked out fine I reckon..  Maybe I took a risk on the lack of a PPI but I rang 'my contact' who gave me a bit of history and advised that the engine had been changed in 2004 - so effectively it's really only got 60k..  I spoke to the mechanic who's worked on it for the last while and he gave it a good report - it drives so well and so tight, starts up smooth, everything under that I can see is clean / new - so I went with my gut..  Transferred the money there and then (CBA to CBA) which showed into his account instantly. Got some thousands taken off the ask and drove away confident..

I think you're right regarding the spacers - is that a job for my local wheel shop..?  The rears are pretty fat and really fill the guards nicely (305 / 35  / 19) so yes, something needs to be done to balance the front..

Plates set it off nicely..

Yes plates look good and good on you for following your instincts and using common sense re PPI.  Sometimes you just got to act.  Re wheel spacers I'd say not for the local wheel shop.  I'd get high quality hub-centric spacers from the net but you also need to ensure you get the appropriate length wheel studs.  You may find for a 10mm spacer your std lugs are OK but do your research.  There is a specific # of threads of engagement for a given diameter of lug.  Pelican Parts will likely have all the info you need or someone local here.  Also do your research on what the final offset will end up being with a spacer as you don't want guard rubbing.   http://www.willtheyfit.com/ is very useful.  If you add a 10mm spacer your positive offset # will reduce by 10.  e.g. go from 40 to 30.  Have a play and see how you go.
