Robert930 Posted 26July, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 26July, 2016 Thanks guys, I want to raise awareness as I really don't want someone else to go through this, speaking with respected 928 specialists, this is not entirely uncommonYou can read up on it more by searching 928 fire etc, but the two main areas to address are:Fuel line, the flexible one at the back of the engine, either replace periodically, or upgrade to braided, front flexible fuel line connecting fuel railsPower steering hose - these run right under the exhaust manifolds, so are prone to cracking and spraying power steering fluids onto hot exhaust, again, change or at least add an extra heat shield or flame proof sleeve. This is what I believe was my culprit as there was no smell of fuel when I exitedI've learnt all this the hard way unfortunately Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(Too soon?)seriously though rob, when you shared the news a few weeks back it was real shocking stuff. Something none of us want to experience. Good that it happened in an open space - not in your garage or a car park - small mercy I guess. Sad to see another lost to fire, it's becoming more common as these old girls age and become more brittle and frail. Your advice is spot on - I replaced every engine hose, fuel line, etc. when I did my top end refresh for this very reason, these old girls drip and burn. Gut feel says you'd struggle to stop the fire, dangerous to pop the bonnet when the fire is already underway.
