Fire - Don't let this happen to you

Sad news folks, it went from a leisurely drive to a nightmare. Don't let this happen to you

1/ Replace fuel and Power steering hoses periodically (even if they look ok)
2/ Carry a fire extinguisher
3/ Have your car insured for its replacement value

Really sorry to see that heart braking image ,,,,hope you were not injured in any way ,,,,very sad to see

Not hurt mate, but could have been, the fire was pretty well cracking along by the time I pulled up, and I only pulled up to take a pic as it's a nice outlook, it was only then I noticed smoke / fire...considering it had a full tank, and only a few nights earlier I was driving through the city with @Edgy and @Hughesy it could have been a lot worse

Sad news, sorry to learn of your loss of a beautiful example.

I have an extinguisher in my 964, been thinking about the 928.

No more thinking, now acting upon it.

+1 I think I'll be doing the same.

That must be heart breaking to see such a beautiful car go up in flames like that. Good to hear that your are OK though which is the main thing.

Thanks guys, I want to raise awareness as I really don't want someone else to go through this, speaking with respected 928 specialists, this is not entirely uncommon

You can read up on it more by searching 928 fire etc, but the two main areas to address are:

Fuel line, the flexible one at the back of the engine, either replace periodically, or upgrade to braided, front flexible fuel line connecting fuel rails

Power steering hose - these run right under the exhaust manifolds, so are prone to cracking and spraying power steering fluids onto hot exhaust, again, change or at least add an extra heat shield or flame proof sleeve. This is what I believe was my culprit as there was no smell of fuel when I exited

I've learnt all this the hard way unfortunately

Thankfully it was one of those cheap 928's. The fire seems to have transformed your wheels mate?

(Too soon?)

seriously though rob, when you shared the news a few weeks back it was real shocking stuff. Something none of us want to experience. For NSW people a permanent reminder is etched onto the Tarmac just as you leave the national park. Gutting

you pick up a replacement in LA?

So sad to see and hear of the loss of such a beautiful car....:(

Glad that no one was hurt but its no consolation as it will be hard to near impossible to replace that beauty....

All the best mate....:)

Robert, glad you are ok, the 928 can be replaced but you can't. Good that it happened in an open space - not in your garage or a car park - small mercy I guess.

Sad to see another lost to fire, it's becoming more common as these old girls age and become more brittle and frail.

Your advice is spot on - I replaced every engine hose, fuel line, etc. when I did my top end refresh for this very reason, these old girls drip and burn.

Absolutely devastating.  I really hope the insurance company do the right thing..

Timely reminder - check your extinguishers and of high importance, make sure you have the right one on board to deal with the carnage.

What do people recommend for mounting fire extinguishers? Are there any preferred mounts out there?

My choice for both my 928 and GT3 was the Rennline mounts with a locally approved extinguisher - make sure you get a CAMS approved extinguisher with a steel bracket

The Rennlin units are very good quality, prefect fit. They offer a few styles, I'm pretty sure you can also get the from Autohaus in Sydney

Extinguisher like this - they don't have to be expensive, just make sure it's made to and Australian Standard and has a steel bracket

Thanks Dave,

The Rennline mounts look good. It's about time I bit the bullet. I'd hate one of mine to meet that fate.

Terrible story, commiserations

do you think if you had an extinguisher, you could have saved it.  Gut feel says you'd struggle to stop the fire, dangerous to pop the bonnet when the fire is already underway.  Absolutely subscribe to carrying one but never had to use and not sure if it would change the result.
