Nice work, a lot harder than it looks to fill a sunroof hole.

@fraz, @porkchops... what can you tell us  about this work? I got told you'd need a new roof. This looks like a simpler cheaper way.... any downsides to doing it this way?

Its something that should only be done by a true tradesman. I am no panel beater but my best mate is, this is what he did on one of my cars.

We cut the repair section out of a donor roof (Not so easy with a 911), it took him many hours of cutting, tack welding, cooling, hammering, metal filing and finishing.

The replacement section obviously needs to be the correct profile, the replacement steel needs to have the same thickness/characteristics and steel type as the original metal. Hence our use of the donor section. Not only that, welding in the replacement section if done incorrectly with too much heat and too fast will warp the entire roof. Even taking the paint off a roof with a sander can warp it if done incorrectly.

Appears Mr Chops guy has used new steel for the repair section, looks like a bloody good job and was probably a whole lot harder than what we did.:cool07:

@Philbee I think it's something best done on a bare  shell as the cost and effort to do something like this on a painted car with a full interior would be at least a huge job, if not economically impossible. Glass out, interior out, reprint roof, repaint car = don't bother. Just drive and enjoy, or buy a fixer upper but bring your cheque book in that case.

I have seen some people have welded in the existing sunroof, but they need to make up plates that fill the gap. If you were to try to make up a panel it would be a very specialist job on an english wheel.

Brian,

The Sunroof Delete panel is £175.00 including and Aluminium Gauge to check curvature in both side/side and fore/aft planes.

Shipping to NSW is £80.00 using UPS – the box we supply is 100cm x 45cm x 8 cm and weight is about 7.5kg as we brace it internally to prevent damage.

If you are going to fit a headliner you will need some tension rods (4 off) as these are not present in Non-Sun Roof cars. We make these rods in a Spring Temper Stainless Steel complete with the rubber end caps at £65 per set (50% of the cost of new parts from Porsche)

We also have headliners in Black or White perforated vinyl at £110 complete with screen aperture clips and vinyl for A and B Posts.

Regards

Chris

Does that help ?

Why does the bell housing need shortening?

To fit the chassis was never designed for a G50.

Some more pics of oily bits below. Full tear down reveals no parts required. Nice to know and keeps the bill down but a shame we had to do al of this just to machine the input shaft!

I've got a bit of time before colour needs to be selected so I decided to investigate some more old fashioned and more subtle colours.  I've got a concern that the Signals look good on a narrow body car but are potentially OTT on a wide body car.  That thought is not definite by any means, so I'll just keep an open mind for the time being.

+1 auratium is very nice and retro, it reminds me of bakelite.

I was reading about Vesuvio Metallic this morning, I think it's my new favorite colour:

As a side note Mr. Pork Chops, thanks for the tip about Ram mounts, I picked one up yesterday. Great piece of kit.

Mr Chops, what's going on? I have not looked in here for a little while and your colours are now all over the place, what happened to the pinky one and the green thing?

From what you have shown above Auratium Green looks the business or Condor Yellow, love yellow on a P car!

Pay no attention to me.  I'm all over the place.  It'll probably be black by the time I make my mind up.

Looks beautiful.  Don't get me started on metallics for god's sake!  Yep, RAM is the goods when it comes to mounting...
