With asexual reproduction, every individual is genetically identical. Which means that when a virulent disease comes along it can wipe out the entire population easily because there is no genetic variety. Sexual reproduction is a way for a species to hedge its bets against future uncertainty.This is what caused the Irish potato blight in the (?) 19th century.If only more spuds had gotten laid!
