Whats for sale (in Australia ) and interesting Thread

Recommended Posts

Prices in the UK don't reflect that here.  You can buy a 997 cup car for about $70k

Interesting. I have never followed the prices, but as I said above, I don't know how much is due to the history. The other factor with old race cars is how tired they are. The UK car reads as if it has been restored back to 'like new", which will be very different from most other 996/7 cup cars. Earlier this year, a well known local motoring journalist was looking into the idea of converting a 997 Cup for road use but was told by specialists that the biggest issue (besides registration) would be finding a car that wasn't too tired. Still, $70k for a track toy of that caliber is pretty special.

Hi JB,

The statistics I found on an Australian website www.gt3resource.com

I have found the official Australian delivery figures for my 993 by asking Porsche Cars Australia in Melbourne. Suggest you call them as they are in charge of all Australian delivered cars.

Cheers Tim.

I'll take Michelle Pfeiffer for $17000 and he can throw in the 928....both in my mancave and drive them  every day, maybe even twice a day ...hell I'd pay his $80000 for that!

Has anyone had a look at this car, seems to have had some work done,

http://carsales.mobi/cars/details/1987-Porsche-911-Carrera-No-Badge-No-Series/SSE-AD-4266906?DistanceFromMePostcode=3122

is it a reasonable price for a uk non original car?

I am pretty certain this car was on the market a little while ago. I really like it, but cannot get my head around what its worth. It has "upgrades I want to do but, and to me this is the big one, I intend to keep everything so that it can be put back to standard if the next owner wants to do that. I have seen 2 cars sold this year that took that approach and they went instantly. I therefore think it has to sell for less than a "standard" car. So you have a UK car with a fresh engine (3.4 doesn't do anything to value?) which should be, say, $80K and take some off for the missing parts. I think it should be closer to $70k but would love to hear an alternative argument.

The other reason it interests me is because if keeping the original parts isn't worth it, I could fund a reasonable amount of my planned work by selling what i take off. Things like perfect condition leather sports seats are worth a fair amount.

I spoke to the owner, it has some rust bubbles on the rear quarter panel just below the seam for the roof, owner not aware of any previous damage.

I am not an expert, but wouldn't rust in that spot mean some sort of panel / paint work done before, how else would the rust get there? How hard is it to identify if there was damage and how severe it was?? ( would a shop be able to identify this during a PPI?)

How would this effect the price?

I spoke to a guy who had a UK delivered1989 Targa for 79k on carsales, dubious history, no real paper trail, sold it for 60k, really hard to determine where the market is on these cars, as mentioned many times in this forum, advertised price on Car Sales not really indicative of where the market is.

I like this car, but like you say Simon, how to price it (particularly if has had previous damage).

Without seeing the rust bubbles, the first suspect could be the drains for the sunroof. If they get blocked, water sits, rusts out and the rust begins to spread (or I could be talking crap as usual!). The right shop should know what they are looking for, but as soon as you start thinking paintwork, you have to cut the price from there. If it's not too bad, maybe my initial thought of $70k isn't too far from the mark.

I think the other thing I would want to know about is who did the engine build. I am a bit puzzled that it looks like it has been built as a track day tool, with adjustable brake bias, harness and buckets, yet there is no roll cage. Seems strange. On the basis on how it might have been used, i would also expect to see some detail of how it has been looked after, service records etc.

The roll cage comment comes from me not liking to use a harness without a cage. In the case of rolling the car, the harness keeps you sitting upright and if the roof goes, you get a serious injury. With a 3 point belt, you usually fall off to one side. You could still be seriously hurt, but there is far less likelihood of a broken neck/back and your chances of surviving are higher.

As for the UK car with black bonnet wrap , Im pretty sure I'm pretty sure I looked at that car early last year sub 50k , was a good car but was a little suspect of some rust ..in the engine bay
